I don't know when the problem started but i was deleting something and heard a popping noise from the speakers, even with headphones plugged in. It happens when I hit backspace or PrtSc, but none other other keys, so I get the impression it has to do with the location of those two keys and something not-right going on underneath them.

I only saw one other post referring to a popping cracking noise but it was mid-thread for a different topic and no one responded to the issue.

Anyone had this problem too, and have any suggestions?

EDIT: looks like its happening more often now. It had been a while since any sounds had played, and then I got a windows error beep and the speakers popped before playing it...

Those two keys are directly over the top of the speaker connector. Have you had your keyboard off of your laptop for any reason? Are you hitting the key pretty hard? I'm pretty sure your keyboard is flexing a bit and bumping the top of the connector. I have no idea why. That is a physical/hardware problem.

I just noticed your edit. I'm thinking that there is bare wire or a tiny portion of the connector wires where they into that plug exposed. The metal foil bottom of your keyboard is coming into contact with it when you type. If you have done a repaste or had the keyboard our for some other reason, it appears that you disturbed this connector in some fashion. Placing a small piece of scotch tape over the connector or on the backside of the keyboard where it is making contact would likely solve the problem.
