So my hard drive pretty much died, so I bought a new one (was going to anyway, as a backup). It's made by Samsung, 250gb, got it from Newegg, etc. I've been using it for a week with no problems whatsoever with Ubuntu (using it now, actually).

I want to get Windows back onto this laptop (though I kind of want to figure out how to use Linux and use that as my primary OS), but the recovery DVDs don't seem to be working. When I boot from my DVD drive, the DVDs boot fine, and the actual "restoration" process goes very smoothly with no errors, and takes a little over half an hour, with three total DVDs. So then I boot from my hard drive, and I either get a message saying to "Reboot and select proper boot device," or I get this: http://i.imgur.com/qIpxe.jpg

Clearly something is wrong, but I don't know what. Any chance you guys know? Thanks.

That happens when you have a corrupted image on the recovery partition or media.

I'm assuming your dead hard drive also had the recovery partition on it, so if your backup DVDs are bad, your only remaining option (without buying a restore disc) is to do a clean win7 install. See: http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html and http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...lk-through-doing-clean-windows-7-install.html

BTW if you have any questions about Ubuntu on this machine, post at: http://forum.notebookreview.com/linux-compatibility-software/451594-asus-rog-g73-ubuntu.html

Thanks for the replies. For some reason, tijo, I can't connect to asusrog at all, let alone that link.

The site has been up and down quite a bit lately. It will probably be back up monday or tuesday.

Awesome, ALLurGroceries, I followed the first link and it worked perfectly.
Thanks for your help, ALLurGroceries and tijo!

I left a partition on my HDD for OpenSUSE which I can't seem to get working, but I'll save that one for later.
