I have a refurbished G73JH which has always been running quite cool, i was lead to believe that this was due to them being properly re-pasted during the refurb process. However after reading other threads on this subject, I'm not quite sure.

Is this the case, or do i just have a lucky unit, or is it just because I'm using stock clocks?

Running Prime95 for 1 hour with Mass Effect 2 minimized, maximum CPU temp was 79 degrees and max GPU temp after playing for an hour was 69 degrees. Ambient temp is 25 celsius.

    Specs:
    i7 Q740 1.73GHz
    8GB DDR3 1333MHz
    640GB 7,200RPM
    17.3" HD+ 1600x900
    Ati Mobility 5870

Prime 95 is fine but I noticed that Mass Effect 2 runs 10-15oC lower than other games as its not hard on the utilisation side of things. Try running a game like Dragon Age 2, homefront or something that pushes the card.

That of Furmark :p. You will get temps over anything you'll get while gaming in furmark...

Yes furmark will push the card to its maximum limits in every way but the OP was referring to gaming temps. Mass Effect 2 just like Dead Space 2 do not push the card very hard when gaming my utilisation only reaches around 50% best to fire up a graphically intensive game and push the settings right up. Ambient temp of 25oC is nice and warm so expect 90's max.

Oh no, i was simply remarking that at the time of running Prime95, Mass Effect 2 was just sitting in the background. That 1 hour playing session was Portal 2.

1 hour with MSI Kombustor (Fullscreen, 8X MSAA), and max temp reached was 78 degrees though ambient is now 22 degrees.

So @ 100% load for 1 hour straight, neither my CPU nor GPU reached 80 degrees. I managed to reach 82 degrees while running them both simultaneously, but that doesn't count :p

How does that fair with the average running temperature? If it's better than average, has my unit indeed been re-pasted or do i just have a lucky chip?

It's better than average, i get just a little higher (~1-2C) with my ICD7 repaste at the same ambient than you. Ambient have a huge impact, you should see my furmark run at 26amb ;).

What temp sensor are you using to monitor temps?

Yep, quite high, i get around 58 idle plugged in at 25C ambient, clean the vents first then repaste as needed. I would still check my load temps, i get almost the same as Dallers at load but i get higher at idle.

I do live in Britain though so my ambient temperature is up and down like Britney Spears knickers!

Pfft, hardly. It's "winter" in Western Australia right now so that means at 2am it's 10 degrees, 6am it's 20 degrees, it's 30 degrees by 2pm, and it drops back down to 20 by 5pm. Come 9pm it's down to 15 degrees, and slowly drops back to 10 degrees by 2am.

That's a normal day for us, lol.

BTW I'm using RealTemp for the CPU and MSI Afterburner for the GPU. From past experiences they both seem to be reasonably accurate. I can feel the exhaust temperature also, and after dealing with an overheating laptop for 2 years now I'm quite good at telling if it's above or below 80 degrees. Plus a laser-thermometer helps too :p

My idle temps seem to be about average, 25 ambient and my idle temp is 46-50 degrees (with firefox running). Usually about a 3 degree spread between all 4 cores.

In Quebec (Montreal) here and it goes from 10 to 25 atm.. :p. You're not the only one with fluctuating outdoor temps Dallers ;). CPU looks good. I would use HWiNFO32 though, all temps in one place and it gives you your fan RPM too. From what i've seen while doing tests, you should hit around 4500RPM on GPU on stock paste (average paste job) at your ambient and be around 83C core/93memIO when gaming.
