    Hi there,

Just noticed that my G73JH now reports, in the bottom right power icon, 99% or 98% plugged in, charging. It doesn't go to 99 or 100% charged (or "not charging", I forget) like it used to.

The battery icon LED in front of touchpad reports a green battery, which indicated fully charged. It is orange when charging.

Question is, is the battery actually constantly trying to charge, or is it simply an error in how windows reports?

Only thing I can think of I changed recently was to install win7 x64 SP1.

I presume the green icon on the battery on the exterior of machine is what you'd go by, only concern is I don't want the battery constantly trying to charge when full.

Have replaced smoke alarm batteries in-case the laptop catches alight while charging at night!

It is functioning perfectly. It is deliberately allowing the battery to drop to 95% and then charge back to 100%. Supposedly this lengthens the life of the battery as it's not charging all of the time.

The thing to go by is indeed the LED on the laptop, since that is controlled by your EC and not software. My guess is you need to reinstall the atk package or power4gear or both, or that SP1 trashed something related to ACPI/power management.

As Networc pointed out, the battery shouldn't charge past around 95% and this is clearly laid out in most ASUS manuals. It's to prevent overcharging. However if windows still reports it is charging even when the battery light is green, you have some sort of software issue going on, I wouldn't expect it to be a hardware problem unless it always stays orange for charging.

Cheers for the reassurance. As it coincided with my first couple of GSOD since I updated the Vbios I was worried!

I think I have fixed it by shutting down, removing battery, and holding power button.

Now it is showing 100% fully charged. Might install Power4Gear too... hadn't bothered to put it back on since I did a reinstall of Windows7 when I got a SSD.

    Thanks again!

Lol, I always keep the battery out of my laptop (I only put it in when I take it somewhere) to keep the battery healthy and reduce the overall heat of the laptop. :D

I am against P4G. Others like the customizability ... I find windows offers the same options, though.

Yup, it's fine. Laptops generally do this to prevent overcharge, therefore giving your battery more full usages and a longer life.

mines 99% percent also. Sometimes reads as low as 97%. Doesn't worry me though as its to prevent overcharging or something. Anyways I'd love to take the battery out, but i have small kids who like to trip and unplug it alot. It would be a hassle if when they unplugged it went off completely.
