    Hey all,

This is my 3rd Asus, 2nd G73. I had graphics overheating issues on my first so yesterday I picked this one up new at Best Buy after reading all the fixes here.

I have a question, I ran furmark for around 10 minutes last night and came up with this temp below. I am wondering if that is good or if I need to repaste it? My house is usually around 70F.

If you ran it for 10 minutes then that is excellent. No need to repaste. I get an average of 83C but occasionally hit 85C, just like you did and I repasted. You might not even benifit from repasting.

I'd say you won the lotto.

If you run the test again look at the main furmark screen. As long as the clock speeds say 700/1000, you are plugged into AC power and you know you are maxed out temp wise (evideneced by a long line of stable temps) then you are good. Everyonce in awhile someone runs the test at lower clocks or battery power, that will lower your temps and not give you your true max heat output.

    Ok thanks for the tip!

I will post that screen in a bit, running the backup program and then I will do it again.

oh one more question, should I run the multi mode or is that just for SLI?

Multi-mode? Why run the multi GPU version? :)

These settings give a pretty good test:
    Stability Test
    Xtreme burning mode
    Post FX
Windowed 1920x1080 (or your screen's native resolution)

Not sure Mark, lol. Not sure why I asked that when I answered my own question.....

Anyway, just ran again and it was running about 77c at the top number on the graph and staying steady for about 5 minutes and then, CRASH, BSOD said something about the video card driver. I am running the latest 10.11 from ATI.

First I got a screen with red and black lines then the BSOD.

    Any suggestions?

You need to update your vbios probably. Look in the GSOD solution thread for instructions.

I just made the exact same test with the same configurations with much more worse results. My temperature at start was 62C and after 2mins and 30secs it climb to 100 degree Celsius. Look like i should repaste my GPU. Im still on stock Bios/vBios (209).

Valkerie is probably right, I just looked at my vbios and I have

    Video BIOS Version: 012.017.000.004.035992

Pretty sure that is the old one right?

    Thanks Chastity,

I will update as soon as I get home. THEN I will run the furmark lol

Well, made the bootable flash drive, put Chastity's files on it, changed the BIOS to boot first to USB (BIOS saw the USB drive) and it just goes to Windows......

Hmmm, what is this 19 year IT expert doing wrong? :p

    ****EDIT****

Jeez, I was pressing delete instead of ESC....... that is what working too much does for you lol. Thanks everyone, I am running the test now.

Sorry for the dual post guys, but my other thread won't let me update until another 24 hours

As I was asking about my temps earlier from my new Best Buy G73JH, I was blue screening when running Furmark about 4 minutes into it. Well I followed the advice given and updated to the latest VBIOS. My BIOS was already 211, but my VBIOS was the first one.

After the update, it ran with no problems. So my question is, are the temps below good or do I need to repaste? I followed Valkeriefire's suggested settings of:

Only deviation being the screen resolution as mine is 1600x900 and that is what I set it to. I was also in Turbo Mode. So repaste or am I good? I want this laptop to last a while so I will do anything necessary to assure it does so.

    Powell,

Your temps still look good. No need to repaste. Curious though, of furmark does 80c, what got you to 85?

Try updating to 211 bios. That will lower your temps some. Let us know if that makes a difference. It did for me, but I'd like to know what it does for you.

Don't update your bios from windows. Use a USB key and do it from the bios menu.

I upgraded my Bios, vBios and repasted. Before my idle temperature was 61-64C, now 47-48C. Very nice improvement. I wanted IC Diamond 7 but computer canada near my location only had Arctic MX-4 so i took it. Asus did a very bad paste job, the old stock paste was hard as dry mud and it was very badly applied (overflow on the side). Im gonna make some furmark test now!

I have remade the test with the same settings and the temperature was at 79C after 2mins 30secs. 21C degree cooler, that great.

No idea why it hit 85 as I took that shot right after I stopped the test....

Valk, again, are those very good temps or just ok? I don't care to repaste.

Yup, those are good temps. Mine maxes at 88 when gaming and 93ish with furmark - on MemIO. Core temp is in the low 80s.

I just ran furmark with your settings (1600x900, no post FX no displacement and maxed at 89 MemIO and 76 core. Oddly enough I get lower temps (than usual) while gaming if I overclock to 800/1000 ...

    Powell,

According to your screen shot your temps are excellent. I might run the test again to see why you got the 85. I think furmark might be looking at your 80c temp, and not seeing the sensor which is reading 85c (Chastity might know why). Either way 80 or 85 you are good to go. I wouldn't worry about repasting.
Now it is time to enjoy your new laptop.

    Axas,

You don't mess around do you? One minute your laptop crashes, six hours later you've repasted and everything. Strong work. Mx-4 is a good paste, I'm sure you'll be fine with it. Glad it all worked out for you.

Guys.. I bought my BB G73 JH in April and I didnt have alot of problems with overheating (beside my seagate HD dying few months ago ) until this past week I have been playing MW2 and my laptop started overheating and shuts down.
I noticed that the Asus Live Update is coming up and using 100% CPU . Even when I exit it, my laptop still overheating while gaming..

My FurMark temps reached 105+ before I stopped it..

what are my options? Should I RMA or repaste ?
I thought I have a good unit until now.. but I guess not. :(

whats is the best app for monitoring temps ( CPU and GPU )?

I even picked up a Targus LAP Chill MAT with 2 fans and that didnt help.. still overheating even thought the middle of the laptop is not even warm, the rear corners are very hot and the fans dont seem blowing at MAX, but hot air is blowing OK.

    Chadiz,

Sounds like your paste has degraded over time. You'll need to repaste or RMA. You can read the thread in my signature to see if repasting is something you are up to.

Just let you wife run to the service center to check it out, it'll take like 4 secs. Or better yet, let genius son take a look at it with his super brain.

Sorry if your name really is JPowell

I was so anxious to do it. I even cleaned my cpu/gpu with after shave (aqua velva) because i forgot to buy a bottle of alcohol on my way back to home. :p

He didn't clear his HWINFO before he did his Furmark, so some previous activity hit 85C. (Maybe a previous Furmark?)

.. I got past my shutdown due to overheating..

I dont know what helped the most.. I did few changes..
Removed Power4Gear , and still shut down,
    disabled Turbo from Bios
    Then uninstalled ATI Catalyst 10.11,
and ran drivesweeper to clean completely.
    Then I flashed Chastisy's vBios v3,
Then I loaded stock ATI drivers 10.1,
I also Fixed the power management Core parking so i can run all cores in High performance setting.

Played MW2 for 4 hrs.. success.
Furmar temp reached 109! ! degreess C!!.. with FAN blowing crazy..

the good is NO Shutdown.. tho my temps so are high and probably needs re-paste but i dont know if that gonna improve alot.

Did anyone have issues with Catalyst 10.11? I noticed my shutdowns started when I updated to 10.11

I'm running 10.1 now and no problems with Idle temps at 82 deg C

What do you mean you don't know... you reached 109 C, shutdown happens if you reach 110 C. That is bad... you need repasting the GPU, there is no doubt about it. Also clean your vents with compressed air.

Your shutdowns did not start with CCC 10.11, they started due to the paste degrading over time. at first you hardly noticed but for me it went from having very decent temps to something similar to yours in less than a week. As a matter of a fact I would recommend CCC 10.11 over any other CCC.

Neither power4gear or turbo mode (basically the same) should be affecting your temps, Try installing to the latest BIOS 2.11 from ASUS site. the profile on the fans is more agressive and they kick in sooner on this BIOS, that also should help with your temps.
