I have this problem with my trackpad, that occurs after typing for a somewhat lengthy period of time. Since part of both my hands rest on the trackpad as I type, almost all of the pad freezes up, with about 1/5 of the left side working. It works completely when I hold down the left click, but otherwise, it doesn't begin working immediately.

I take it you never opened up the Synaptics Control App to check for options...

You will find an option to adjust PalmRest sensitivity. Increase the filter to lessen detection.

I doubt the palm rest setting will help. It is meant to shut down the touchpad while typing and should have no lingering affect. You most likely have the same problem many of us do, a touchpad that stops working after a while, especially after typing. There are many threads in the forum about the problem.
