    Hey folks,
Well my laptop's harddrive is on its way out and it made me realize that my G73 is getting old (a whopping 2 years old!). I haven't kept up with Asus's laptops but just found out about the G75 and G55 and they look lightyears ahead of mine.

Problem is that my G73 is really cumbersome to travel with and would like something thinner and lighter, but something that I can still game on with the same or better performance of my G73.

Question is, is the G55 going to match or exceed my G73? Specs are in my sig.

The g55 is 8.4 lbs and the g73 is 8.47 lbs. The MSI GT60 is 7.72 lbs. That's the lightest gaming notebook you'll ever find.

I can overlook the weight if the performance is good. A pound isn't going to make a massive difference.

*points at sig* i beg to differ - the M11x is a "gaming" notebook (dare i even call it a netbook) and with an SSD rocks up at just under 4.3 lbs.

I had my G73 first and thought it would be great to take on holiday, but it was a nightmare to lug around so i ended up buying an M11x while on holiday to replace the laptop which i had originally bought for that holiday in specific. I'm still happy though, but make sure you have your priorities right. If portability is an actual criteria, i think 17.3" may be too big.

The weight may not be different but the size will be and the G73 had very fine wide loins ;)

In performance terms you are moving up 2 generations of CPU and GPU the performance in CPU terms will be huge and in GPU terms pretty reasonable but the biggest factor will be the battery saving because the kepler and ivy together will heavily outway the life of a a 720QM and 5870M.

It would be a good upgrade, but Rishwin has it right M11x when travelling and for portability FTW ;)

Didn't they drop Alienware M11x from production?

The GT60 does have great performance, while being a pound lighter. :)

An 11 incher is way too small for me though. I need to have decent screen real estate for when I travel and 11 inches would drive me insane.

That, and I don't want a Sager or Clevo.

Let me put this another way, how does the 5780 stack up against the 660?

The 660M will beat it but not by much in performance terms the 5870M still holds its own. The biggest factor is going to be heat and power consumption when you compare the two because kepler will destroy broadway.

Also consider the jump from the 720QM which is a 2009 First Gen CPU now and add that to SATAIII SSD speeds and the upgrade is worth it.
