Some of you asked for it, here it is. A video that demonstrated the incredible performance of the OCZ Vertex 2 on a G73JH

YouTube - Asus G73JH boot up and shutdown time with OCZ Vertex 2 240gb

Enjoy, and i hope you all do the upgrade to an SSD, well worth it

I forgot to mention i'm running firmware 1.1, according to OCZ support the latest firmware cuts off an extra 5 seconds off boot time

So a 30 sec boot time and slightly quicker load times.... it was worth losing a ton of extra space, and and extra 200+ dollars lol... SSD's are awesome, but until they drop to the price of where HDD's are now, I just cant justify it.

Not to mention, my HDD a 7,200 RPM on my alienware M17x is only like a few seconds slower than your boot and shutdown time.

By few seconds you mean a few 10's of seconds...i doubt youre talking about 3 or 4 seconds difference
And i mean yes you are right, 300$ for 240gb is an incredible deal but still very expensive...but hey, thats how it is with new technologies, if you didn't care you would'nt have an alienware laptop, you'd have some kind of HP pavillion...LMAO

haha true enough, but no maybe its because I keep my laptop really clean, memory wise. but my boot time is maybe like 20-30 seconds ( and yea I mean before I can start opening programs for regular computer usage). I'm sure a SSD would just be lightning fast, but I think its just a good idea to hold off a little longer. Soon enough 500gb SSD's will be around 200 bucks or so, then I may consider making the transition.

Oh man, i just wish with the price drop, the reliability will be greatly improved. Having an SSD means talking extra precautions keeping an up to date backup of my files, when these things fail, it's an EPIC FAIL.

I have a Vertex 2 160GB as a primary and a 750GB 7200rpm HDD as a secondary for data and storage. No way I'm going back to a simple HDD as a primary.

Time to boot will depend on each person's start up programs but at the end of the day it will still be a TON faster.

I have a Corsair SSD in my G73 and to be perfectly honest, when I first installed it and started using it I wasn't absolutely blown away by the speed increase. Yeah, it was faster but it didn't seem astonishing to me. And it was expensive for 128gb also.

I used it for a while anyway and overall the experience was good and I had rationalized things in my mind.

I still had my OEM 500GB hard drive still with the Windows install on it, just saving it as a backup hard drive in case the SSD failed. Eventually I decided to add it in the second bay as a data/game drive. Great plan.

I decided to do a quick test and boot off it for Windows and play around, just to see if it seemed any slower. HOLY CRAP I thought my computer was broken. The thing moved like a hundred year old elephant with cramps. I played with it, used it, booted it up and down, all that stuff for a good 20 minutes and seriously, my computer seemed like it became ten years older.

The SSD is back to boot duties and the spindle drive holds my games.

So for me, I wasn't blown away when moving forward but I sure as hell noticed it when I went backwards. I will never be without an SSD as the OS drive again, no matter the cost.

(If I only had one bay, however, things would be different. In that case I would use something like the Momentus XT.)

Well, why everyone is putting such big emphasis on the boot/shutdown time? It's not like you boot the rig 20 times per day - and there is always Sleep and/or Hybernate

Yea, I have one and i think a SSD is great, but not because my laptop boots fast.

I used to say that i could not justify buying one due to the price but since i brought mine i can't recommend them enough to people. If your not bothered about the time it takes to load everything up when entering windows and speedy apps then keep with the normal drives.

Hey guys, i'm looking to compare and get a baseline for my SSD, it already had data on it before as i used it to transfer files and didnt do a clean erase with OCZ tool can you guys please download this SSD Benchmark tool and post youre results here for all 3 tests?
I know you should use OCZ ssd tool to format but i used windows and i'm wondering if it affected my performance...please try this and post screenshots, here are mine:

    thanks

Alex Intelligent Software - Downloads: AS SSD Benchmark
    download link is on top

Try the test 2 times and use the best results to post them here

I also invite anybody with an SSD to do the test and post results here

Most people use ATTO or crystal disk to judge their disc access speeds, so do many manufacturers.

I like my SSD because Fallout 3 levels load so fast I cannot even read the little hints on the load screen because they disappear before I can read 3 words!

My SSD is pretty much identical to a Vertex 2. I'll post my Crystal Disk and ATTO benches later today, I think I have screen shots saved. As DcX said, Crystal and ATTO are the popular ones, my manufacturer uses ATTO.

All SandForce manufacturers are using ATTO as standard bench tool since it uses a highly compressible pattern enabling values like 275MB/s. Crystal Disk shows more real life usage values.

like can be seen in my post here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sol...-5-965-chipsets-jjb-tweak-20.html#post7156512
217/143 MB/s reported by CDM versus 281/265 MB/s reported by Atto...

    Rather crappy marketing standards...

Let's just say everything opens like "BAM" compared to 2-3 second wait.

G-Skill Phoenix Pro, same controller and firmware as a Vertex 2.

    [IMG][/URL]
Crystal on the left is Random, on the right is 1 or 0 which is more compressible.

ATTO looks more like the published stats, mine is little slower than when I got it, but it's almost full now too.

Wooww, what do you mean after optimization (right)?
    Also what are your marketted r/w speeds, me it's 285 r/ 275 w

Mine has the exact same specs as yours, same controller, same firmware, etc. 285k read, 275 write, 50,000 IOPS. Pretty much the same drive just a different manufacturer.

By optimizing I meant doing all of this....

The SSD Optimization Guide | The SSD Review

Optimizing didn't do anything for my speed though. It worked fine when I got it. My screen shot above is confusing, on the left is Crystal run at "Random" and on the right is Run at "O", otherwise the laptop is the same, the notes I wrote on there were for something else.

The trick isn't getting the drive to work, the trick is using the same tests the manufacturers use. My ATTO speeds of 273K read/240K write are pretty close to the published specs, especially considering the drive is 6 months old and at 85% full. Overall I am very happy with it. I would think if you use ATTO and Crystal you'll get similar results. Run Crystal on "Random" and "O" and you'll see a big difference. ATTO uses all compressible data so it looks better.

SSD is the one thing my G73JH doesnt have because I just cant justify the price and lack of space. I store huge amounts of data and if I was going to spend that amount of money it would go on an 920XM.

Not to mention boot time means nothing. I leave my laptop on around the clock downloading or idling away as I do with all laptops because I like to access it instantly. When I do switch it on I go to the kitchen for food and return and bing bong its loaded and how many people watch as their computer shuts down? You close the lid and walk away lol.

Loading the levels is a worthy reason to purchase and If it affected my frames per second I would be on it in an instance.

Snappier response on some programs like Photoshop is the only reason I got a SSD for this laptop. The boot time/shutdown speed can be relevant if you're short on time (moving from one university lecture hall to another)

i see that the prices are pretty similar with Vertex 2
are you getting some extra feautures from the Vertex 3

yes google is available in Macedonia (but i appreciate someone who got it on this specific machine to answer me) and you didn't post me the answer i was looking for
i don't have a hybrid drive like the XT Momentus
basically i asked if the Vertex 3 would perform better from the Vertex 2 on SATA 2 port on the G73JH
