Hello, first time poster and less then 3 day G73JH-A3 owner :)

So just like it sounds, I went to go shut down my computer, and it went to install the automatic updates. It said "Installing Update 1 of 21", hung there for awhile, gave me a quick BSOD and shut down. I go to boot it back up, the Asus logo appears, lingering much longer then before. Then it goes directly to the screen telling me

"Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key."

so I go into the BIOS to make sure that the HD is still set to boot, and the Blu Ray drive was the first, and a hard drive was the 2nd. I say "A" hard drive, because it only gave me one to choose from, and it came with two 500GB drives, so now it doesn't even look like its detecting the drive at all anymore. I try to boot into safe mode, but pressing F8 during startup does absolutely nothing and doesn't bring up any menu of any kind.

Anybody else have this experience or know what I could do to remedy this problem?

reparing the bootloader with a windows 7 disk will probably fix it for you.

Since you do not have a windows 7 disk with the G73 you have to download the .iso from microsoft and burn it to a disk.

there are other ways/programs to repair the bootloader but the automated win7 way is probably the easiest to instruct somebody to do.

I have a update pending right now too :D just had that restart computer message come up and told it to wait the max of 4 hours before it restarts.

Where on microsofts website would I go? Because since I can't prove the validity of my OS from another computer, I don't know how I'd go about downloading the .iso from them. I do have the product key on the bottom of the G73JH, but thats about all I could provide to prove I had a legit copy. I do have a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate on hand, could I perhaps use that? Cause I tried booting up with that and I hit Repair, and it couldnt detect my hard drives with that either.

thanks a whole lot for the link, going to give it a shot and hope it works. unfortunately its going to take awhile for me to d/l, now the waiting game.....

edit: one thing I noticed in that link, is that some people seem to be having trouble running a 64 bit executable on a 32 bit machine, and the current computer I am using to make this .iso is a Win XP w/ SP2 machine 32 bit, and my G73 is running Win7 Home Premium 64 bit, is this going to cause me trouble?

I do not think that will be an issue, I made my win 7 64 bit DVD from a vista 32 bit machine & it works fine on my 64 bit Win 7. Good question though, I honestly had my doubts till I saw it work.

Ok, got my hands on a copy of Win 7 to use, made it to the System Recovery Options, but it doesn't even show my C: in there at all. It shows my other HD containing my Videos and my BD drive, but thats it. Its telling me to add drivers if it doesn't show up in the list, are those drivers on my disc that came with my laptop?

edit: so now I tried doing a reinstall of Win 7 using that disc in the meantime on the other HDD because that one actually showed up, and now during the Expanding Windows files, it hangs at 65% and then I get an error message saying:

"Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the application. Error code: 0x80070017".

Seems like I can't win either way here.

It sounds like a defective HDD to me - maybe the little 4GB hybrid thing is stuck with an old prepatched cache image of windows and keeps trying to load that?

Ok, a little update. I managed to get Windows 7 Ultimate installed temporarily (since it belongs to someone else) on the other HDD, and then once booted back to desktop, I formatted the drive that windows was originally installed on, and then tried to use it. Soon as I tried to write something to it, it gave me an error message and then disappeared from My Computer completely, so I'm guessing it was the HDD that went out on me.

so i figured out the problem, turned out the HDD died on me, so I RMA-ed it today and am now just waiting for it to come back. Could've fixed it myself, but hey, making good use of that warranty they gave me, with free shipping to boot :).
