I've been running Catalyst 12.8 (I think) for over a year now and I wanted to perform a quick upgrade to a newer version this morning. Just a quick fix afterall, uninstall Catalyst, reboot in safe mode, run a driver sweeper, reboot and install.
I ran the Catalyst mobility manager and it downloaded 11.9 for Win8/Win7 64 bits but when I try to run it I get an error message saying my version of windows is not compatible...
?...
Not sure what to think. For now I'm back on some old Asus driver from the Asus website but I'd like to go back to something more modern.
Unfortunatly AMD only pushes the latest drivers so I can't install a slightly older stable version.
The driver should work, I don't understand why it says my Windows is not compatible...
The driver file downloaded is:
13-9_mobility_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql

Try to download it again, maybe the download is corrupted. Installation should work fine. You still have the original Windows 7 installation running?

I'd search places like guru3d for a manual download.
-
I tried redownloading 3 times but even if you try to manually find a specific file, AMD's website always pushes the auto-detect in the end so I always ended up with the same file.
I searched google for a manual download of an older stable version of Catalyst but each link brought me to the same AMD error page.
I'll look into it when I find time later this week... For now I'm using the "latest" Asus official drivers (late 2010) and they do the job since I've fallen from gamer to casual gamer. Can't have too much expectations with a 3½ years old laptop.. -
Do you still get the error if you try to just install the current driver over the old driver?
Have you ever upgraded the VBIOS? (see threads in this forum for a guide and more information)
Actually most games are running still very fine, you just have to lower the resolution from time to time. -
I agree with kowell, I stopped at 12.6, all drivers after that ruins everything, total mess, even a total re-install I had to go through.
-
pato: I updated the vbios when I bought the laptop in June 2010 but I haven't touched it since.
Laurit: Yeah I should have stuck with 12.4 or whatever previous version I was running. I usually update catalyst and do a full cleaning of the notebook twice a year but this time I should have stopped with the physical cleanup. -
I'm running the latest 13.11 beta without any issues, or maybe 13.10 beta, don't remember.
Anyway you can download the current 13.11 mobility beta from here: AMD Catalyst 13.11 BETA 9.2 (13.250.18.0 November 7) Download
Older versions can be found here: Guru3D.com (scroll down!) -
Thanks for the link I'll give it a look when I'm at home.
Hopefully I can find a stable slightly older version like early-2013.
Are all the catalyst link available on Guru working for notebook or do you have to be carefull to sort between the desktop and mobility versions ? -
Really you shouldn't have to stay with an old one. Once I stopped using driversweeper to remove the old drivers I stopped having any problems with updates. As long as I simply installed the new catalyst over the old one it has worked fine from 12.1 all the way through to my current 13.9. I don't upgrade every version, just when I am in the mood to check, about every 3 months or so.
I get them off a direct download, like Guru3d, as the catalyst update software seems a bit deranged!
Almost every post lately with driver update problems has started with mention of using Driversweeper. It was useful in the old days, but I think once drivers are working fine they keep going with an over the top install. Less hassle, less problems. -
They contain the word "mobility" if they are for laptops
-
is your problem solved?
-
As SpicySi said, just installing the new drivers over the old seem to be okay. For me I installed Win8.1 fresh, let windows install its own video driver. Then just install the latest version from AMD (i'm running 13.9 with almost 0 problems), for 'Mobility HD'. Even updating to a beta version, I just updated over the 13.9 to 13.11 bX and it was fine. -

Driversweeper is not for frequent use, it really should only be used to fix specific issues.
-
I have Catalyst 13.9 on my G73. I also used Driver Fusion before installing. 0 problems.

Each time you use a program like driver sweeper you are trusting it will not pick a file by mistake, that is the issue, it wont always cause issues but that does not mean it's a good idea.
-
I got my G73 from Power Notebooks BTW! :hi2:
-
I had the same issue with the driver not installing. I eventually used the 'driver verification tool', it must do something different because the driver installed as expected.

yeah I know I'm like a broken record on the subject. Glad the machine is still getting on ok.

I just want to thank SpicySI, I was having a display issue and attempted to completely remove 12.10 with drivesweeper in safe mode, ccleaner, etc and whenever I did a custom or express install NO driver was installed, For the later dirvers, when I went to custom inst. ATI driver was checked but greyed out and could not be expanded. All I could install was the HDMI driver. lucky I had 12.10 install package and it worked perfectly. + 1 SpciySi

Usually the checkbox is grey and ticked for the drivers as there is no point in installing the package if you are skipping them if I remember correctly.

AMD Catalyst 13.11 Beta Driver for Windows -
Thanks a lot Kevin and Meaker ... My G73 has reached the end of its lifecycle. (Battery is non functional, Screen is in PSOD mode;I can't get the frame off to replace it and the LVDS cable), and now the HDMI port is failing (Yes I have 2 HDMI cables that I know are good)... Time to upgrade, does anyone take tradeins? LOL

:cry:Say it's not true Josea! My G73 is still rockin! I did have to replace the screen because of PSOD, but it's not a bad job at all. I've replaced the battery on mine too. OK, I used a cheap $30 one, but it does work. I'm just not ready to buy a $130 battery from Asus. I'm not sure about the HDMI port. That's a bit troubling. Is it just loose or is it electronically intermittent? Did you ever upgrade the vBIOS? What a difference that makes. I'm still upgrading mine. I put a second SSD in and added a wireless mouse.

I finally figured out why I could not upgrade past 12.10 CCC - I had deleted the C:\AMD folder. I ran the 12.10 setup (thus creating the folder), did express uninstall, ran driversweeper in safe mode (old habit die hard) then was able to upgrade to the latest version (14.1 Beta)
