    Hey guys,
I just picked up a G73JH-X1 (5870M GPU) and have been running Skyrim on Medium settings. While things are running great, I decided to check my temps. My GPU seems the idle around 66 deg C and when running Skyrim, it runs around 88-90. It peaked at one point at 94 to 97.
Is this normal? Seems high to me.
Also, I could be wrong but, I thought I heard a very faint "ding" like an over heat alarm. Is this possible or am I imagining things?

Any suggestions other than blowing out the fans, which I already did.

Mine runs that hot as well. Didn't when it was new ( but games at that time
were not as demanding either ). No expert but I doubt it would be considered
    normal temps.

During extended BF3 I have hit 100 but have not had GSOD or shutdown.

I am pretty sure mine needs to be re-pasted after two years of constant
workout. Unfortunately getting to the gpu is no easy task on the G73 so
    I keep putting it off.

Will need to repaste and use a good thermal paste. Otherwise, most games you run on med-high will overheat.

Games that overheat 95+ on me:

    Skyrim
    Battlefield Bad Company 2
    Dragon's Age
    Call of Duty Black Ops
    Rift
    TERA
    Fallout 3
    Fallout 3 New Vegas
    Kane and Lynch: Dead Man
    Mirror's Edge
    Borderlands

As you can see from the list, ya... the thermal paste Asus use is really bad.

95 isn't "overheating." These aren't desktop GPUs that run considerably cooler. The shutdown point is at around 120. You should really only be worried about heat once it hits 100+. If the laptop shuts down on you while playing a game, you'll know that it's getting too hot. In that case, you should get it repasted, or, if you've had the laptop for well over a year, the problem is more likely dust clogging up the fans.

There is no overheat alarm. The only "alarm" is the safety shutoff point which is 110-120.

Also, I max Skyrim out on my G73jh, why are you only rocking medium? lol Push it as high as it will go with the framerate you want. Don't be afraid of it overheating.

Skyrim pushes by SW up to ~83. It's the only game that ever gets that hot. So that sounds about right for a JH. I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Seems a bit on the high side to me but may or may not be indicative of thermal issues. Keep monitoring your temps and if load temperatures start to rise past 100 C, then you're due for a repaste.

What about the idle temps of 66ish when surfing the internet only?

Good news is, its under warranty and I have a local ASUS authorized service center that will cover it at no cost. Figure it's worth getting done just in case.

That's a bit high, you're right. I would get it serviced for that.

That's the classic symptom of needing a repaste. I doubt you live anywhere that hot and/or humid. I have pretty average temperatures and surf the web at around 53 C and less than 50 C with a cooling pad. If you're too scared to do it yourself, have the ASUS Service Center repaste the GPU (and CPU if you desire) with a good thermal paste. I recommend OCZ Freeze and IC Diamond 7.

Also, since you just got your G73JH, make sure you have already updated to BIOS 213, video card BIOS v93, and the latest AMD Catalyst drivers. There were issues back in the day with GSODs (gray screens of death) and the fans not kicking in when the temperature rose but those were solved with the BIOS updates.

I idle at 65-70. It's hot in Texas. It's really not an issue unless your temps start climbing but your room temperature doesn't.

You might just have some dusty fans, judging by the age of g73jh in general. How old is your laptop and when did you last do a simple dusting? :)

I remember when I did my first dusting at 12 months age my idle temps went from 65-70*C before to 50*C. I did a dusting recently and now when I play skyrim I sit at the lower 70s

If you're talking to me, I took my computer completely apart a couple months ago and got all the dust out. Like I said, it's hot in Texas and I don't have central air and heat.
