I'm really shocked that it didn't include anything, can anyone recommend a free one?(I doubt there is one) or a alternative that is decent in features and doesn't cost much?

Don't know if this will work since I have the X1, but this player is base on Media Player Classic by Gabest and is suppose to be able to play Blu-ray discs and... it's free. :)

If it doesn't work just off of media player classic, it may work after you install the Klite Mega codec pack.

I used the one from Asus, there is a link to it on one of these threads somewhere. Can't remember what it was WinDVD 8 or something like that. (Not sure why they didn't install it originally, either they missed it in thier base image, or they hoped no one would notice)

I'm using MPC+Codecs (Not K-Lite though) on my HTPC but while I can play the M2TS file straight off the BR disk, I still have to browse to the main M2TS file.

The app doesn't automatically play the BR movie by itself. Though I also have PowerDVD 9.0 which is my main BR player.

Part of the reason why I skipped on the BR option on my N71 is the BR playback on PC's is very iffy due to BDLive encryption.

On my HTPC (with projector on a 120" screen), I have AnyDVD+PDVD to get seamless BR playback. Without AnyDVD, there were several movies I couldn't play due to newer BDLive on them and the fact that PDVD releases updates only once/twice a year while the industry changes the encryption at will.

A stand-alone BR player will always => PC BR (unless u spend $XXX on software).

Sorry for the rant. Frag Out.

Have you tried putting a blu-ray in the drive? From what I read on the forums, it seems that if you put in a blu-ray in the drive the WinDVD 9.0 program pop up and will automatically play it.

But if you don't have it, don't despair, because all you have to do is go to http://support.asus.com/download
For Product put Notebook, For Series put Apps, and for Series look for WINDVD. Now pick your OS and download the WinDVD 9.0 that is entitled to all Asus computers.

I've already tried to install on my G72GX from best buy and it works. However the Asus version is a limited feature version so it only plays from discs such as DVD or Blu-ray or CDs. It doesn't play files off the hdd.

the file on the asus website is actually WinDVD8 V8.0.B09.579, and it DOES NOT play blu ray dvd's, even in vista 64 emulation mode. selling this g73h-a1 with a blu ray player with no way to play blu ray discs is outright fraud, and asus should be taken to task for it for not disclosing this info prior to sale or in the spec sheet.

This is completely false. The software works fine and plays blu rays great. You may want to install it again or try a different disc, bacause all of mine work perfect on it. It is true they should have included it in the base install, but at least they supplied it as a download.

With the exception of Blu-ray playback, on my other computer I use MPC+FFdShow, which equals a combo similar to, and sometimes better than, VLC but with a better interface. I prefer to stay away from codec packs as they're potentially dangerous.

In this post here I expressed my opinion of later versions of PowerDVD, specifically v9 of PowerDVD Ultra. Has Cyberlink finally listened to their customers? If not, don't you find "MoovieLive" to be extremely annoying?

I skipped the Blu-ray option on my G73 because I figured it would end up being a race between finishing a movie and the battery dying. At home I use a PS3, which remains one of the top 5 Blu-ray players available.

the machine I have is win 7 64, and no matter what I did, could not get windvd8 to work- it would hang trying to obtain a key and thus never even have a chance to work. after talking to tech support again, they admitted there would be issues with windvd8 and that they were still "developing" a dvd player package, which to me means negotiating a price for a later version of that same software that actually works with win7 64. I'm using the cyberlink 10 trial package and it works fine

Does PowerDVD 10 also include that intrusive "MoovieLive"?

You need to right click WinDVD8, then run as administrator and it will get the key right away. It should work perfect after that :) Don't feel bad I had the same problem, someone else mentioned that in a post somewhere on here.

I also read somewhere that you have to be using WHQL signed drivers to enable blu-ray playback.

BZZZT. Wrong answer. Been using the cat 10.3 betas and now the 10.3a without issue. You don't need WHQL signed drivers.

Seems ASUS wised up and is now including CyberLink Suite which includes a Blu-ray player. It is not registered though so it is limited. $15 to upgrade it.

Update- the CyberLink Suite is only burning software and does NOT have playback capabilities. My oversight.

I only see Vista 32 & 64 and it downloads version 8. I haven't tried the software yet but if you have 9 for Windows 7 64, can you post a link to it?

    I use this:

    http://www.digistor.com/ArcSoft-Tota...ay-DVD-Edition

For $20 it works well. On my G50, G72 & G73 I had to install it, reboot, uninstall it and reinstall it, run it once for the update to pop up and install. Seems to be the only way it works with Windows 7 but it's a lot cheaper than some of the other solutions.

Still occasionally asks to update and then tells me it's already up to date but it plays every Blu-ray I've thrown at it.

    Cheers,

the windvd 8 software from the Asus support sites works perfectly well... right click and run as administrator so it will update the keys... the keys will not update if you don't do this
