My GPU fan on m y G73JH-A1 sounds like it's vibrating, if i tap that side of the laptop just right it will stop but as soon as i move the computer again it starts the noise again.
I'm wondering if it's possible it's just a loose screw or maybe the fan is just bad. either case i'm not opposed to opening up the laptop and fixing it. (i work on them for a living so tearing it apart is almost second nature)
My question is this: has anyone else experienced any weird fan noises like this? and does anyone know where i can get a replacement fan? i hate to send this thing back and wait a month for a fan when i could fix it myself. i understand that's why we have warranties but i'd rather not go that route for a $12 part.
Does Asus handle warranty parts like Dell does? i know Dell will send you the part if you tell them you can install it yourself.
Thanks guys!![]()

Sounds like the fan is going bad.
You can try a cross-ship. Just ask. No guarantee's though. -
OK i think i found a cooling fan for this thing, can anyone confirm that the CPU/GPU Fans are the same? i know the heat sinks are different.
i found this but it doesn't specify whether or not it's for cpu/gpu
Fan / Cooler / Heatsink
they don't have a picture so it's hard know if i'm getting the right thing
edit: they also have this, but the descriptions on this site are weak.

Mine makes that noise too sometimes. It's the right fan (while looking at the screen).
It only does it for me after boot up and it's intermittent. Comes and goes. I have been meaning to contact Asus about it but I really don't want to be without my laptop either. I guess it's better to get it fixed now rather than wait until the warranty is gone.
Please post an update if you figure things out. Thanks. -
I've been getting the same type of fan noise recently. It's also the right fan only and it happens after boot up and then fades away.
-
Booting up seems to get the GPU hot for some reason
anyone else notice this?
-
how loud is that noice ?
i get little noise when the cpu fan is turning on LEFT fan if you are looking at the display (which i think is normal) , RIGHT fan is working all the time
i don't know if you are refering to the same noise -
When mine does it, it is unmistakable as something wrong.
It comes across as a subtle grinding noise, definitely not a normal noise that you would hear when the fans ramp up to high speed during normal operation.
Fortunately, it hasn't gotten any worse. It just does it after boot up especially if the laptop has been sitting for a while and is cold. The noise always goes away quickly, usually within 10-15 seconds.
I just can't bear to send it away right now since I use it so much. When I contacted Asus, they wanted me to start filling out the forms for a hardware issue and send it to them.
I might have to just suck it up and go without my baby here for a while to get it fixed. -
I would probably bite the bullet and send it in... Especially if there is warranty coverage still in effect.
If there wasn't however, I would open it up and replace it myself. -
i know what you mean Jet B
i've used to hear those noises at the startup in those cold days in my old PC but not in this laptop
i couldn't find the answer to that (cleanind wouldn't help)
if you don't want to send it to ASUS open it and see how the fans react
i don't think there is a man who doesn't have issues with this laptop
it just can't be too good to be true -
Yeah, I have the same problem as Jet B. It only started recently as well.
-
Mine does it also: house right (stage left) fan sounds like it is slightly gyrating as it spins. I can make it go away by putting the laptop on my lap - changing the angle of the 'spin'.
-
Grr... Should not have read this thread! Now I'm cursed as well
Only when you start it up will it grind away. Guess I'll be calling ASUS next week -
So did some of you RMA for this issue?
-
My gpu fan also makes noise but only when M playing bc2 or any graphic intensive games that too like with gaps not continuously. I am kinda confuse is it normal? My gpu's Max temperature is 85.5 C in game.. thanks

I think that's normal for the fan at the GPU (right side of the screen when you're facing it) to run louder when you're doing graphics-processing demanding applications.
But if you hear sounds that are quite unusual like grinding, then that's not normal I think, can you provide a video or audio of its grinding sound? -
JehutyZeroshift what about this (left side vent - CPU FAN)
YouTube - G73JH-A1 CPU FAN CYCLING ON AND OFF (watch HD)
no one was able to give me solution do you think this is normal? -

I think the tool that you have been using to view temperatures is not working properly. Try using HWiNFO32 as it's much reliable. -
100 RPM is when the fan is turned off
Everest shows 100 instead of 0 -

How come your CPU fan turns off when the computer is not in sleep or hybernate mode? As far as I know, the only time that your fan would turn off is when your computer is on sleep, hybernate or is turned off.
And with the temperature of the CPU core, that's no reason for the CPU fan to turn off. Try using HWiNFO32 to get a second opinion. -
the temperature of the CPU Core exactly control how the FAN will react
can't you see when it comes near 42 C the FAN turns OFF
i don't need HWinfo becouse i can hear it when it is turning off and on -
I have an ASUS G73SW-BST6
I live in Brasil... so I have a MUCH BIGGER problem.... the warranty is valid only there in USA...
I opened my laptop, REPASTED, with Arctic Silver 5, did ALL things correctly, JUST TO FIND OUT THAT ----->>> THE GPU FAN WAS BLOCKED!!!!!!
acctually, I have the notebook for 3 months... and it was working FINE before... I used to play for hours, and a couple of times I checked the temperature, and it was FINE... like, 10 HOURS PLAYING it wouldn't go over 67, 70º C.....
NOW, all of a sudden, IT's GETTING 90 with 10 minutes playing... THE FAN SIMPLY STOPPED WORKING!!! WHY???? its NOT DUST, IM SURE! VERY SURE!...
NOW, here in BRASIL there ISN'T, simply, ISN'T anything that FITS this motherboard... NO COOLER FAN is compatible...
I think i'm gonna have to BUY a fan FROM USA... wait for like MONTHS...
very, VERY disappointing...
[EDIT]:
I FIXED!!!! OMG, I AM NINJA!!!!! NINJA JYRAIA!!!!
I cut off the center of the cooler ( leaving just the plastic/metal cover ) and repleaced with another center of another cooler ( a 7 YEARS OLD cooler from my old laptop!! heheheh )
I MADE A BEAUTIFUL ARTWORK, HAND ARTWORK, BEAUTIFUL!!!
The cables are as thin as HAIR... I reconnect them, WELDING, in different combinations, to match the Asus cooler combinations...
NOW: My very very silent Asus startup with MAXIMUM COOLING, LOTS OF NOISE, like AN AIRPLANE!!! YEAHHHH!!!!!!!
hehehe, 33º C in idle, and with 10 hours playing: 55º C!!!!!!!
PERFECT!!!!!!!!!! YEAHHH BABY!!! -
Mine started Doing this yesterday, It's buzzing and vibrating, and It's MUCH louder than before.
I can probably get it fixed easily, but My question is, is it Harmful or Dangerous? Is it humming going to hurt the computer so I should fix it sooner rather than later? -

I ran that program, and I'm not sure if I can read it, but it looks like everything is running okay...
The Right side fan (The CPU fan?) seems to be expelling a lot of heat when I'm doing very little. If I leave it off, it will run quietly for a while, and then it starts making the whirring noise. Is the CPU overloading? is it a mechanical thing that makes the fan noisier? If it's a problem with the actual CPU itself what could be causing that? I think the CPU is working harder than it needs to, or something, I'm kind of new to these things, so... yeah.
Basically what could be causing this? Where the right hand side fan seems to be working really hard and expelling a lot of heat that shouldn't really be generated at such sedentary levels? The Left hand side fan is nice and quiet, until I start a Graphics-intensive game, when it starts working as would be expected. There's something fishy with the Right fan, though. anyone know why this would be?
Edit: On further inspection, it seems that the fan is simply in overdrive all the time, regardless of how much heat it's actually expelling. -
I noticed a bit of a weird wobbly whirring noise from the right fan when the GPU temp gets over like 75, in a weird periodic fashion. The temp graph when running Fumark is an oddly bumpy curve now too, as if the fan speeds up to max, starts to make the noise, and slows down again.
I tried checking fan speed with HWInfo64 but dont see it under any sensor data (only one GPUFan speed listed, but its the one always stuck at 30%). Any other suggestions?
Oh and Im hitting bout a max of 90C with a decent Fumark burn in test. Idle is ~55C. This oddly all started after a blue screen when watching a video on a website. -
I have this vibrating noise in the fan as well and it's getting worse, almost like the fan is scratching on something. I'm buying a fan from System Fan (G73) and going to try and replace it. Hopefully it's not too hard!
-
it took almost a month to get a GPU fan for my ASUS and as soon as i got the fan the noise stopped. So now i have a brand new fan sitting on my shelf and haven't needed it.
Not sure if a piece of dust worked it's way out or what, but i use the machine pretty regularly for gaming and the fans work perfectly...
Very strange but it is what it is. -
im having this problem too with the fan on the right of my laptop, and although im not using my graphics card, the temperature is at 56 degrees C. Is that temperature normal? (Geforce 460M). Would it be dangerous to use my laptop until a replacement part comes in?
edit: also when running d3 the gpu temp goes up around 70. is this still okay with the fan running on super man mode? Or is it better to wait till the part comes in -
Those temps are nothing to worry about.

So I misread this thread and I Have an Asus G73s, not G73JH. I am still hoping to get some help though. The right fan on my laptop is extremely loud/fast, as soon as I start up my computer. I'm not sure where/if I need a new one, or if it is possible for me to lower the RPM. (My computer is barely running anything, yet the right half of my laptop is actually vibrating/almost shaking from the fan...and it is extremely loud.) Can anyone offer me tips or advice? Thanks in advance
edit: also, is it bad to use the laptop while the fan is like this? I know it's dumb but I almost feel like the laptop will explode with how fast/hard the fan is working -
Ok this is weird.
I used compressed air cans to remove dust away from my G73 and a lot of dust came out. Turned it on, then the right fan (facing the screen, I think it's the GPU fan) is noisy.
My temp before using the air cans at idle is like 60-70 degrees (im using CoreTemp btw). When I used the air cans, it went down to 50-55 degrees at idle, but then the fan was noisy. Even tried playing D3 for a good hour, the temp was just at 70. Should I disassemble this and check at the GPU fan? I would but this is the only laptop I have lol. -

It is possible the dust muffled the sound a bit, got any temperature/RPM data from HWiNFO?
-
Yeah here.

BTW, Cores0-3 goes up and down from that 923 Mhz to more than 2000 Mhz. Is that normal? -
Regarding clock speeds, yeah it is normal for it to downclock when the CPU is not under heavy use.
The data from HWiNFO looks good as far as fan speed goes, idle temps are still a little high, but they are within what i personally consider safe. If you are in a very quiet room, you should be able to hear the fans, with a little ambient noise (tv playing for example), it shouldn't be audible. I can hear mine at those speeds when it's quiet, but i can't otherwise.
