GPU-Z is indicating that my GPU is switching between 405 and 700Mhz back and forth when I'm idling at desktop. What could be causing this?

How idle is idle? Do you have a browser process open with, say, a YouTube video open (but not playing)? What is running in the background?

UI stuff (like Aero) can bump the PowerPlay state into "medium" state...unfortunately the "medium" state clock setting is the same as the "high" state setting...something many of us would like to see fixed in another vBIOS update.

So Aero is causing this? Man... ATI needs to seriously bring it up a notch with their powersaving profiles for laptops. Nvidia has them beat in powersaving profiles = =

AERO is turned on for me, I am browsing the web, and unless I play a flash vide(goes to 500/1000) It stay at 405 all the time for me (unless I start a game of course)

I've had no issues with that sort of thing and I've used the Aero since day one.

I've also never had any issues with Aero causing me to go over 405. Only make that jump when going to games.

ATI is not at fault here, they just provide the base ATOMBios version its Asus that made such a cruddy vBios out of it. MSI, Clevo and AW all have proper seperate profiles for LOW, MED and HIGH for their mob. 5870 so it can indeed be done.
I dont know how the Asus would react anymore since i havent used it for a while, but the MSI vBios stays put at LOW when im idling with all aero features turned on.

Also, Aero is not at fault here either. I just used that as an example since the Windows UI (which uses DirectX) can use enough GPU resources to bump up the PowerPlay state.

Asus is the one who did this with their vBIOS configuration....I can't imagine why they configured the state settings that way.

I'm no hero in tweaking my graphics card, so I was wondering if there's an easy-to-use program to make our own profiles, in case we game/watch movies/browse the web.
Ive got the 93vbios, and it changes between 700when gaming, 500 when watching youtube's, and 405 when surfing/idle'ing..
Lets say I wanne change those to 800/500/100, whats the easiest way to do so ?

you think it is 405 all the time but it is not :)
open a monitoring program all the time and do some stuffs and you will see that it jumps very quickly from 405 to 700 and back in a second to 405 :)

i have noticed that in many cases

EDIT : I will do a video if you like that clocks jumps for the unbelievers

but i don't recommend you to change the values if you don't know what you are doing (changing clocks and getting the right ones within your desire will take you a lot of time and flashing)

Well I know something about overclocking, if thats what ur concern is. And ive flashed my vbios before. So its necessary to flash the vbios if i wanne use my own values ? Is it possible to use CCC and just set some profiles ? I wouldn't know how though... :p

if you want permanent clocks you need to flash
if you want temporary clocks you can make shortcuts on your desktop with amd gpu tool

Hit my Driver and App page link below, and download my vBIOS with battery saving settings. It enables the Overdrive tab in CCC for easy overclocking, plus it has some good battery saving clocks. (~3 hrs, depending on tasks YMMV). Install it the same way as the other vBIOS updates, just change the .bat file for the proper filename.

Thanks Chas for taking the time to respond, I know ur a busy woman ;).
I already flashed my 5870 with ur vBios, and my question was what the easiest way was to change those values, so that when I go to batterymode it doesnt change to 250 - 500, but to 100 - 200. But I guess I'll have to flash my vBios for that with a custom-made RBE bios :).

    the title says it everything
i am running 4 programs in the video

i forgot to change the language to english so here is the translation but i don't think you will need it
GPU работен такт = GPU Core

and btw i couldn't record the whole screen becouse my clocks were all the time to 700/1000 on full screen so i recorded a part of it so it can stay in 2d mode(400/1000)
also clocks get stuck with enabled dreamscene on desktop ....

    here we go

All normal. Even on desktop, opening skype, msn,Furmark will result in a higher clocking on a nVidia gtx 295.

I guess the program are pooling the card and it put it in 3d state for a sec.
Nothing to worry about, it normal behavior and not ATI fault here.

This was at me correct? lol

Umm I guess I can make a video or something tomorrow, but it might be because of my modified clocks, and the fact I have mine set (in all but High Performance mode) to be Maximum Powersaver on battery and AC

I probably should have added in my other post that these are under my circumstances =X

That's one reason I updated my vBIOS. Fix_OD2 has all my AC clocks using 1000 memory, and UVC and idle AC clocks are both 400, to minimize jumpy display.

no fix_od2 still has yours 500 memory clocks and screen flickers ... better change it

my vbios is like that too 400/1000 for AC and UVD clocks and 700/1000 for 3D

I never saw any flickering.
    2D setting 125/100.

Maybe this clock changing is only while win aero is enabled? Try basic theme.

    http://pcaudio.ath.cx/stuff/fix_od2.rar
and you have high performance and UVD both on 400/500
can you provide me the link with 0.9v on batery mode (i can't get it working on 0.9 AMD gpu tools report 1.1500

i am talking about the flickering or whatever is called when you change clocks on AMD gpu tool you see on top of the screen lines or something

well i hate that part ....that's why i keep the memory at 1000

@tilla you said that your clocks don't jump ... did you saw my video ? and what do you have to say about it
