My G73 is almost 2 years old now and has had issues with the screen for the last several months. Upon boot-up the screen will not always initialize and will leave just a blank black screen, if I restart multiple times by pressing the power key before the laptop actually boots I can get it to initialize eventually. It acts like the cable might be lose or going bad is there a way I can check the cable before taking it in for repairs? I have built PC's but never worked on a laptop before so any help would be appreciated thanks.

After I am able to get it booted up correctly there isn't any issues with the laptop.

Could be the drivers try uninstalling and reinstalling video drivers. All else fails take it apart and reseat the graphics card and the cables plugged into the screen/motherboard. It's not too bad just group and remember where you put the screws. There should be a write up somewhere on google I've taken it apart before and it's not too bad just be careful and you'll be alright.

If there isnt anything even at boot, chances are it isn't a driver. Drivers only effect windows environments.

Now, when the screen doesn't produce anything, does it actually boot up? You can check this by plugging in a monitor to the laptop. Or listen for the windows sounds.

If an image is displayed on the external monitor, and the LCD doesn't produce anything, then most likely you do not need to reset the video card. But perhaps reset the cabling from the mainboard that gos to the LCD, and the cables that go to the backlight.

Here is a video of how to take apart your laptop:
    BTOtech.com | G73Jh & G73Jw & G73Sw Disassembly Take Apart G73 g73jw service manual - YouTube
(only take apart what you need to, to get to the cables. the LCD should be able to remain attached)

The Backlight is in the lid. I never took it apart, but if its like most, there may be screws that are under the rubber stops, if not then it just pulls aparts and clicks back together.

TIP: Dont bend out of place your keyboard, or the little clips that hold it in.
Make sure you have a fine screwdriver.
Backlights usually go bad slowly, by working sometimes and not other times...
With the plastics off try turning on the laptop before assembling everything. If still nothing try gently manipulating the according cable to see if there is really a sort.
If the problem still continues i'd get a new backlight. (only if the computer posts with a external monitor when the lcd doesn't do anything)

to make this clear. If you can hook up a monitor and get video, or wait and hear windows, your machine is "posting" and its a video problem.

If the machine is actually hanging up when you hit the power button then it may be something else.
Let me know what you find out!
