I posted this question also on the owners lounge but I noticed it isn't too active so I want to post it here also so I can improve my replies. Here's my original post

Hola, been a bit since I posted but I have a question about my audio and I need some help for a clearer answer then what I'm reading.
I decided I wanted to invest in some headphones for gaming purposes, after some research I decided to get the A40/Mixamp bundle from Astro.

Okay so from what I know so far, The G73JH doesn't support 7.1 sound through the headphone jack but you can get 7.1 sound through the HDMI output, I think. I would need to get a TOSlink/hdmi coverter cable. Is that a viable solution meaning that will this work? Or would I need to get the Asus Xonar U1 device connected to the laptop, then connect the mixamp to the Xonar, then connect my headphones to the mixamp. Here's the link to the Xonar device and in case you don't know what it is.

I want to take advantage of the 7.1 sound the mixamp can provide so with my model, G73JH-A2, will I be able to receive 7.1 audio? If anyone has any good solutions that will be a great help. Thanks.

If you want output over Toslink from the PC to this unit for multichannel, you will need Dolby Digital Live. It supports 5.1 encoding over SPDIF. Something like the Asus Xonar U3 can provide.
