Once again, thanks for the continued help, guys.

I updated the BIOS and the vBIOS as suggested, and that was all successful. I reinstalled the boot HDD, and the same thing happens. I get past the "Starting Windows" screen, then to the black screen from right before the Windows desktop shows up, and then... reboot!

My school laptop started doing this same thing to me two weeks ago. It isn't an asus or anything, but it could be a related problem. Basically, as soon as the "Windows XP" logo appeared and the bar progress bar started to load, shortly after that the computer would reboot itself. A fresh install was the only thing that could fix it, so I lost all my data. But it would keep rebooting itself over and over and over, the only way to stop it was to unplug it/turn it off. Since the fresh install, it has been OK.. I mean my laptop is a piece of junk, but it works.

This situation really sucked because I am a teacher. I rely heavily on powerpoints, so for class that day I just had the kids play pictionary lol. I couldn't teach for 3 days... the students seemed to think it was pretty funny.

Ya if this is a OS install issue then well, you got off lucky, what made it odd was the boot CD doing the exact same thing. By any chance is your recovery partition still intact or are you using a fresh OS disk? (I would reccoment getting a Win 7 Home ISO and then using that)

Okay, so a fresh install it is...

I used the discs that the comp prompted me to make the first time I booted it up. (It didn't come with an actual Win7 disc.) So far, so good. Everything seems to be in place. HDDs seem to be healthy, memory reads as all 8GB and functioning, and so forth. I've completed all Windows updates, and gotten rid of some of the bloatware that came pre-loaded. Now it's just up to me to reinstall all my other programs, etc.

I'm still curious as to why this happened. Why did Win just not want to boot? It also makes me a bit worried for the future. In any case, cross your fingers, and hope I'm okay from here on in.

Thanks (again!) to all of you for the help and advice. You were all very quick with to assist, and I sincerely appreciate it. :notworthy:

And Morticae, I'm right there with you... I'm a teacher as well, and I use this for all of my classes (and not just for PowerPoints, but for more robust programs like the Adobe Creative Suite and so forth). I was most definitely freaking out when this happened the night before I had to teach two of my classes!

    your last driver install/ updates
    once the computer rebooted...crash central.

one or both could have been corrupted..or you did a hard reset without a chkdsk and over time it got worse...any number of reasons...but at least it's fixed.

    and no rma is needed!

    lol

You said it! Very thankful to not have to RMA. I'm glad it didn't happen when I did all my Windows updates after the reinstall today. I didn't do the Microsoft mouse driver update, tho. Not that I think that would blitz out Windows, but... :)

    Thanks again for the advice!

I know I'm coming in late here, but I suspect you may have gotten:

    1) a corrupted registry setting for some piece of hardware

    2) a nasty little virus playing with you

EIther way, yeah, an OS install was the way to go.
