I JUST got my brand new G73JH-B1 in the mail today and I've already run into a problem. At start up it asked me to connect to a WiFi Network, I did so (or so I thought). I picked my home's wifi network and entered the WEP key, receiving no error. However, when I was brought to the desktop, I noticed that I was getting an error on my network saying Limited access or No network access.
Troubleshooting found no problems (as I expected, does that ever work? no.), so I'm unable to connect to the internet at all.
I'm writing this on my 2 year old Macbook which is able to access the network just fine.
I have Verizon FiOS on a Motorola router.
Can someone offer some help that doesn't involve me buying the Intel 6200 Wireless Adapter?
Thanks.![]()

try using WPA2-TKIP+AES for your router and card and see if that works.
-
Reset the router, it might be trying to give the same IP to your mac and g73... you might have to assign static dhcp addys to each.
Whatever it is it is def a router problem, my old di524 has this problem sometimes. -
Lol. @_@;;;
I know how to reset the the router... but anything else both of you said went right over my head. -
You may not have identified the network. Go into your Network and Sharing Center and look to see if there is an "Unidentified Network". I have seen Windows 7 refuse to connect to a network until you tell it whether it is Public, Home, or Work. Public firewalls more strictly.
If you click on the Unidentified Network, you are given the opportunity to identify it. -
I'm in the Network and Sharing Center, I've clicked on the "Unidentified network" icon... however it won't let me rename it or choose an icon. I can highlight the text freely, but it won't let me delete or type in the box... Any suggestions? -
I had the same problem. What worked for me...
1. Open your network and sharing Center
2. Click Manage your Wireless Networks
3. Select "your" network and then click the "adapter properties" tab above
4. Uncheck "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
See if that works! This is of the top of my head so you might have a few more steps invoked. Good luck -

Ultimately, my problem was my firmware on my Linksys router. A few months later I upgraded it to the latest and greatest and was able to run that laptop DHCP again. -
You need to check for updated firmware for your router, and updated drivers for the atheros card on the asus website. Try this first.
You should change your encryption to wpa2+aes if it is offered on your router.
Maybe tell us what the model number of your router and atheros card is so that people may be able to help you better. -
Using TKIP+AES instead of just AES is like putting a boltlock on your front door, but using a simple latch on the back door.
Use WPA2 AES only. Anything else can be easily compromised. -
Atheros Card - AR9285
Router - Verizon Actiontec MI424-WR

Is changing the encryption on my router going to affect the connection of other computers in the house?
Also... how can I update the drivers of the card on the website if I can't go online? lol [I would hope the machine came with the most up to date drivers anyway, it's the newest model.]
Also... I have no idea how to update the firmware... -
So I tried logging into my router but I'm unable to. I don't remember ever setting a password, and I tried everything I could think of along with everything default I could find online.
Not to mention every time I type something into the password field it shows 3 characters...
This is pissing me off. I can't comprehend why this would possibly be having a problem. -
Anyway here is where the latest firmware is for that router...
Verizon Online - Actiontec Firmware Update
If you change from WEP to WPA then yes it will disconnect all the other WiFi devices you have already connected. I am not aware of being able to run two types of connection security on one WiFi Radio.
To upgrade the typical router, you download the firmware ROM (linked above). You navigate to the router's home page which is usually http://192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 and I've seen one AT&T 2-wire router that was 192.168.1.254. You'll need to know the username and password for your router. You log in and one of the web pages you navigate to is for upgrading firmware. You will upload the rom that you got from the internet and it will apply the ROM to itself.
The same warnings apply to flashing a router as to flashing BIOS, vBIOS, or anything else on any other electronics. You could brick it. Make sure it doesn't lose power in the middle of flashing and don't disturb it while it is flashing... don't flip it over to look at the model number or check wires or anything else. Upload the firmware and don't even look at it funny until it's done.
I'm not trying to "talk down" to you. I'm just throwing all the warnings out there in case you've never done something like this before.I hope that it solves your problem with the WiFi!

I guess you found this link, then. -
It seems the only solution to logging into my router (since NO passwords are working/doing something weird where 3 characters are displayed for every 1 I type) is to reset to the default settings; something I'd rather not do because I'm unsure of the ramifications and I wouldn't know how to set everything back up the way it is now.
There's not even a guarantee that updating the firmware would allow me to connect to the internet?
In my mind, if it was a problem directly associated with my router, or at least the firmware not allowing my new laptop to connect... wouldn't the laptop not even be able to SEE that wireless network/receive limited connectivity because the card isn't supported? -
-
try go into safe mode with network and see if you can connect. Try disabling your firewall and windows firewall to eliminate that as a possible problem.

Surprise... for the first time in the history of the universe calling tech support in India actually worked. Their go to option "factory restore" somehow fixed the problem... .
Thanks for all the help. -

101mbps for $100 a month, that's 10 times faster for only 2x the price for regular cable not bad
-
I had to look that up. I live so far in the sticks here in Texas that I didn't know what an Optimum Ultra was!
That right there is waaaay cool.
For the OP... I am really glad you got your problem fixed. My wife brought home a Mac Book Pro from school over the summer. I played with it a lot. I have been earning a living with computers for a long time now, but never had a Mac. It is very cool. I loved loved loved the touch pad.
I ran into the same problem you were having last week but I thought surely this wouldn't be your problem. I gave a good friend an older desktop that I had shut down when I built my new beast. His computer died so I dusted it off and set it up for him. It would see the router, but always said "Unidentified Network". I worked on that darn thing for two hours. Then I realized that I was an idiot. The built in ethernet was incompatible with Windows 7. I had stuck an Intel NIC in a slot and was using that the whole time. I finally remembered this, moved the network cable to the slotted NIC instead of the built-in one and it worked like a peach. I bet whoever said your NIC driver was hosed was absolutely correct. Restoring the computer to factory reinstalled every driver including the Atheros.
If you want the nifty two finger scrolling on your touchpad like you had with your Mac, you'll have to install the Synaptics driver from their web site. The Asus provided driver does not have that feature.
