So I have a AOU139e (B173RW01 v.3). I just got my G73JH-BST7 from eBay and it looks nearly brand new. Probably because the previous owner hated the screen as much as I do. Its fine for web browsing but not gaming or watching videos. I really like the laptop (quiet, cool, and a performer). I'm not going to bore you with the usual comparisons and vs. screen manufacturers but I'm curious if something is just actually wrong with my display instead of it just being poorly manufactured. Here's a pic.

Horrible viewing angle I know but even after calibration it wont come close to usable in a dark setting game such as L4D2 or Metro. Half or all of the screen is completely washed out. This is with the brightness at about 50% in a dark room. Here's a pic of metro.

Unusable. Here's a screenshot of the game on my desktop monitor.

This pic doesn't do my desktop monitor justice it actually looks alot deeper in color but its there for reference. Same lighting conditions and all. Low and behold my monitor is an Asus.

Please ignore the light around the laptop display as I have removed the bezel to see which side the connector was on and didn't put it back on. I ordered from laptopscreen.com a compatible 1600x900 display, and it should be here Tuesday. I would have upgraded but 1600x900 is fine for me and my poor vision. I never hear which displays people recommend at that resolution so I figured I'd try anything I just referred them to my current screen and asked for something else. I plan to update with my results after Tuesday. I'm curious though. Is my laptop what these displays normally look like or am I a special case and something has happened to the display to be this bad?

I also have G73Jh, its display is one of the worst, but it's cooling and performance are just too good. I just use external monitor if I can.

Still, you problem seems a bit serious, maybe it was exaggerated by the camera?

Looks like a problem with your backlight or diffuser.

It is serious. Really surfing the web is fine due to the light colored screens and dark text you never notice it. Clear and vivid display and didn't even notice the issue until I finally tried running Metro's opening sequence. The external monitor just kinda defeats the purpose to me.

I'm glad to hear that these displays really aren't this bad. I rather know I have a problem than think a company would have shipped these in gaming laptops on purpose. I googled LCD diffuser to understand more and found it informative. +1 to you for pointing me in an accurate direction. The other thing I read is that wiki said "Good uniformity is harder to achieve, especially as the LEDs age" Surely not in 2 years right? I mean the manufactured date isn't that long ago. Maybe it was a display model that stayed on 24/7 for two years. Hmmm...

The LCD is obviously defective, you would see the uneven backlighting when the windows loading screen comes up... I would try to haggle with your ebay seller or file a paypal claim if you still can.

I see I misunderstood you. I just assumed the inverter came with the new screen. They sent me a new LG screen and it looks the same. I contacted the ebay seller about a return this morning. I would consider changing another part to make it work but after a few googles I don't see a replacement inverter online. Besides from what I see online a faulty inverter gives you a really dark screen, won't come on, or after awhile just loses power.

So I'm thinking its more just the backlight but I still don't see a replacement for that either. Hopefully I can send both of these things back and minimize my loses. I knew I should have used Newegg instead. Whats the saying... "Once you know, you Newegg"

That display is LED backlit and therefore has no inverter. Inverters are for CCFL backlit screens.

If two screens are doing that, that's really weird. Was the backlight pattern exactly the same? It could be probably power-related, as in the power cable going to the LCD, or something in between the power supply and the screen.

Yea from what I could tell exact same pattern. I took another picture of it when I had the LG display (model # LP173WD1 (TL)(N2)) in there but it was more of a comparison shot again.

The one on the left is the G73 of course at mid brightness with my black image while the one on the right is the macbook pro (2009) with the same image at mid brightness. Huge difference. I put the original display back in and contacted the seller he seems like he is willing to let me return it, but is questioning the problem I'm having with it.

I even tried to go to Best Buy and see if they could reprint the original sales receipt so I could use the Asus warranty. I figured I know the serial number is tied to the receipt and maybe they could find it. It seemed like they could but wouldn't because I was not the original owner. I figured that though. Worth a shot...

After reading that and waiting to hear back again from the eBay seller I thought about what you said and I suppose the backlight issue is not exactly the same from the original AUO and the new LG screen. The LG's dark area is much broader and easier to work with. I put it back in to test and heavily caliberated the screen to try and recreate / match my macbook. Its still noticeable but much better. The color gamut on the LG screen is much better though than the AUO on a side note. It still feels like I have to create a special color profile just for dark scenes.

Maybe I'm just picky but its frustrating to see how deep the black levels are on my Macbook and these other two screens look overly bright and washed out no matter the setting. I contacted laptopscreens.com and they are going to allow me to swap screens. They want to send me a ChiMei - N173FGE-L21.

I don't really see any wire damage going to the screen. I tried hooking it up to an external monitor to see if it was the video card (laptopscreens suggested it to make sure it wasn't the cause) but sure enough it displayed fine. I read on here about a guy who put strips of paper behind the screen to help with backlight bleed on his display. Maybe I will try the same with the original screen while I wait.

I received my new screen after some talking with the helpful folks at Laptopscreens.com and upgraded to a 1080p display. They sent me a matte LG - LP173WF1 (TL)(B3). I'm extremely happy with the results. Black levels are so much deeper, viewing angles are insanely better than the stock screen that came with the laptop. Here's a few pics.

Macbook is on the left. New G73JH screen on the right. Huge difference.

G73JH screen by itself. I'm not sure why the light blue-ish haze appears at the bottom. I only see it when photographing. Camera issue perhaps.

Similar shot of the in game footage of Metro2033.

A better shot down that hallway that I started to use to compare the screens on my own. I didn't notice before but their was a lamp on in a room behind me (in game) that was causing an extra glow from time to time.

Also my only concern about upgrading was a drop in performance, but it is negligible. Here is a M$ Paint photo-chop job to illustrate the difference.
This is a FarCry2 benchmark. One of the only games that has a standardized benchmark test that I have installed ATM. Thats everything at Max and 2x AA at both screens Native Resolutions. Yes it is a drop in frames but for the quality in displays it's pretty much a no-brainer besides the increase in resolutions did make everything look cleaner. I didn't think the extra pixels would have meant that much in visual quality.

Thanks again too Laptopscreen.com for going above and beyond good customer service requirements.

Your wording has me a bit confused but I'll try to answer. I originally had the AUO139e which is a 1600x900 screen and I replaced it with a 1080p LG - LP173WF1 (TL)(B3) matte. Matte or glossy is just your preference. Just make sure the connector is on the same side as your original and you'll be fine. Good luck and I highly recommend doing it. Its a bit time consuming but very easy. I'm assuming you're the same guy that messaged me on YouTube. :D If not here's my tutorial. Awesome. I've never had a thread sticky'd. BTW I'm missing the Beavis and Butthead picture. Especially since the show's come back.
