Thank you for the quick explanation. Those were the only two things I was hesitant about before purchasing it tomorrow! I'll let you all know what I think of it in a couple of days

For some reason, if I disable the asus turbo, Furmark runs kinda choppy. Upon enabling turbo, it goes smooth again. Any reason for that?

Turbo will give a slight performance boost in single threaded applications. Many older games are single threaded. Single threaded means the program that is running uses one processor. Your CPU has four cores which we can think of as processors. They share on chip cache, but for all intents and purposes they are four independent cores. They are also hyperthreaded in the i7 series. Hyperthreading allows a single core to process two instructions in some circumstances. Therefore the i7 can behave like 8 cores if the program is extremely optimized.

Many games these days and most major software packages like Adobe Acrobat, MS Office, Photoshop, etc. are all multithreaded and take advantage of more cores. When they begin processing, they spawn several threads and ship them to different cores. One thread might be processing RGB shifting in a picture while another thread is reassembling the final JPG as the data feeds back in and that sort of thing.

The i7 boosts itself by adjusting it's multiplier. If it has 8 busy cores and is pulling maximum wattage, it will clock down to 1.6GHz. If it has one or two threads running, it will boost its multiplier and go to 2.8Ghz. (This is the 720. The 740 is one speed bin faster.)

Boosting the base clock from 133Mhz to 142MHz causes the chip to draw more power. If it is busy with several threads and the base clock is pumped up, it will hit the power limits faster and therefore will shut itself down to its minimum multiplier. You will get worse frame rates in this scenario.

If you are running a single threaded app, the cores aren't busy. The CPU is not near it's maximum allowed power draw. There is headroom so it will stay at or near it's maximum multiplier. In this case there was room so the 142MHz base clock is not causing the CPU to run out of headroom so the result is actually a performance increase.

Whether you get an increase or decrease depends upon whether the primary app you are using is multi or single threaded as well as how many other "big" processes you have running in the background. If you are processing a huge spreadsheet and running a furmark at the same time, the Asus turbo will hurt performance by on-chip turbo. If you are ONLY running a furmark and it happens to be a single threaded app, you will see a bump. You should see about a 189Mhz increase.

The max multiplier for an i7 is 21. 21 * 133Mhz is 2793Mhz. At 142Mhz, you should hit a max clock of 2982MHz. If you are multithreading with Asus turbo "engaged" you can actually wind up in a state where Intel's speed boost locks in at a multiplier of 12 thereby slowing down everything even more than normal. Single threading will yield a higher max clock.

Sorry for the long explanation. You seemed genuinely interested so I thought I would lay it out there for you. Intel has a chart that shows loading and the multiplier that will get set based on number of active threads. My numbers are based on the i7 720 since that is the processor I have. I think you have a 740 and it is 133Mhz faster than mine (one speed bin).

Anyone can post the P/O# from the box if you have the LG Screen. I got an AUO screen and my P/O# is J0X-074878. I just want to see if it will be the same way to determine which screen the G73JH-BST7 will have before opening up the package. Thanks!

I did a ffxiv benchmark on 1080p and it got a little bit over 2000. Also, I have experience GSOD a couple of times when running the ffxiv benchmark. I haven't try to fix the GSOD problem but FFXIV is still playable at native resolution.

Yeah the average base score for a G73 on the FFXIV benchmark is about 2100ish. The benchmark is garbage tho. And is no indication of how the game will run imo.

    1st time poster !!
I run across this laptop on the internet, and then found this forum looking for reviews.
This looks like the laptop for me !!
Fits my budget, and lots of performance.

I will most likely be buying in the next few days, and was wondering if anyone has figured out the LG / AUO screen mystery ???

Has anyone had any other issues I should be aware of ??

Great Site, with very knowledgeable posters.

well that just makes the decision to go to the JHW a no-brainer. 1 more year of warranty, accidental damage, a backpack, a mouse, more RAM, 2nd hdd, 1080p screen, and blu-ray for $400 more? hmmm...

Yea, I just went to get one at BB a little while ago, and couldn't believe it.
I didn't think to print off the price that was being advertised. I did speak with a manager, and she check and said that the price history showed that it was never 1199. I told her about this thread that had been going on for 2 weeks about it with 1199 price. Finally got her to agree to try to get me the 1199 price if I could show proof that it had been 1199.

So I came her looking for some help. Did anyone print the BB page with the 1199 price, or does anyone have a receipt that has the full model number on it priced at 1199.

Whether I get the price or not I would love to prove that the price was 1199.

    Thanks for any help.

    Chris

It was $1199 last week. Just a common tactic by a retailer to charge more for a popular item.

Actually, it's controlled by their price server. A hot item gets a price increase automagically.

Also, you can go to this page, and it tracks prices from bestbuy, it shows the price increasing on 10/03.

That is funny stuff. So I went to best buy the other day and was looking at this same model. The sales lady was pointing out to me that the 1299 G73 (Older Version) and the New Version BST7 was 1199. I was asking them why the difference when the new model has better processor. She finally looked it up and said ohh that price is wrong. The price is 1399. That crap makes me angry as I was looking at purchasing the BST7 at the end of the month. Does anyone know if BB will honor past prices when they have inflated the price like that? This is obvoiusly gouging. I have half a mind to go down there and tell them to honor the 1199 price when I go at the end of the month to pick it up.

Also someone mentioned the Sony Viao. I looked at that one too. I didnt like the Nvidia card it has though. Plus its only 16 inch compared to the 17.3 of the G73. The Sony runs 1299. But it does have Blue ray in it.

Sky355... i did the same thing, i had the intention of walking in and buying the BST7 however the price had changed.... They did hook me up with the older RBBX05 model for $1050 which is what it cost if it's referb... So that may be something to think about... I got mine, and it's been great plus i saved $250 and if ya wanted to you could take that savings and throw it at the warranty.

I will save you all the long and short of it all but i got the old G73 and it was a "lemon" and now have the newer model, first thing I did was check the moniter, AUO here. I will be uploading Fumark and other programs to bench this thing - Let me know what kind of screenshots you want!

Yeah I am waiting till end of month to buy mine. I said screw it and am going for the JW-A1 with the Nvidia Card. I will sacrifice the little bit improved performance for a stable and less heated Laptop. Im purchasing from Xoticpc. Plus I want the split mouse button.

I talked to Xotic today they are going to downgrade the blue ray to just a dvd for me and save me 96 bucks.

I figure I may as well go for this deal as it saves me from buying a laptop bag and another mouse. Also the fact that I get a 2 year plus 1 year accidental on it from Asus over the 1 year Id get with the BB Model I think its much better deal to go that way. plus more ram, hard drive and faster hard drives.

    Best Buy G73JH-BST7 1399 + sales tax $92 + 450 Warranty + 60$ Laptop bag + $30 mouse = $2130

Xotic G73JW-A1 includes all of the above with better stats. and no sales tax $1645

I think the choice is obvious.

I was in the same position today! I went to the store to check it out, and it had 1199 tag. I asked what the difference was, and the guy said it was an older model. After I showed him it's the same as the one online, he said the price tag was wrong, but they still will honor it if I wanted to buy it right then. I of course did! :D

So I just upgraded from a M50SV-A1 and couldn't be happier!

When I bought my RBBX05, I had gone into the store when it was $1199. When I went back a week later to look at it again, the price went up to $1299. When I was there though, the salesman made a copy of the price tag, and I also looked on their website and it was listed for $1199, good until August 14th. So I showed the salesman this and he sold it to me for that price.

A few weeks later it went on sale for $1199. =/ At least I got it a little earlier. If only the sale price was lower, I could have gotten some money back. T_T

The price will more than likely not come down again. I've seen this happen a number of times w/ Best Buy - a new model will come out, and within a week or two will increase in price by $100-$200.

Hi all, first post over here, this thread has been quite clarifying and I thank all posters for that.

I intend on buying the G73JH-BST7 from BB even with its new 1399 price tag because it is still the best price for what it comes with.
I have one question though, i want to buy one 7200rpm 500GB hd from bestbuy also but I don't know which one is the best, Seagate or Hitachi?

Both of 'em have the same price and specs. i read that the Seagate is more silent than Hitachi, so that is the one i´m inclined to buy, even though I have a lousy history with SeaGates hds...

Any one have a comment on that?

Anyone over here know of a better laptop at the same price range in New York?
I'm updating my 2001 Compaq Pentium 3 933MHz at the end of the month and I wanna make sure I'll make the best deal.
    For now it's BB G73JH-BST7 plus a Seagate 500GB 7200rpm Momentum Laptop HD .

Any and all suggestions and pointers are welcome!
    Thanks, best regards,

I think the JW-X1 looks like a better deal with the new Seagate 750GB 7200rpm HD and a more std 17" display for $250 less. Though I like the Toshiba 18" now having 1080p after all those oddball resolutions last year on the 18" models.

    Cheers,

Chastity thanks, although i like Toshiba, ASUS lower prices and better specs won me over that one

Lord Zath thanks for the tip, from what i saw it also has 2GB more RAM, bigger and faster HDD, 2 MP webcam (vs 1.3MP), 1 usb3.0 port (vs no usb3.0 ports) and Nvidia GTX 460M Graphics with 1.5GB GDDR5 (vs ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 with 1GB GDDR5 although for what i googled ATI 5870 is a little faster even with less RAM, something like 3 more frames per second in some games, just saying.)

Does anyone knows what is the RAM clock on the BB version?

Everyone agrees that G73JW-XA1 is a better option for 50 bucks more?

What about G73JW-A1 is it worth it for the faster RAM and HDD size?

I was at BB w/the wife, they had a few in stock, and she couldn't make the decision to buy it for 1200. When she finally said "ok," the price had already gone up. Oh, well. For $250 more, we get 1080p and that's about it iirc. There's far too many different models, though!

FYI - I've run several different side-by-side comparisons between my G73JH and the Qosmio nVidia - GPU heat on the Qosmio were between 79c to 85c - FPS on Unigen-Heaven Benchmark were the same - FPS on Resident Evil Benchmark were also the same.

That price in the link is a great price. Sacrificing less RAM (compaired to the G73) for slightly larger screen and BD-ROM. I am also not very impressed with the TruBright screen -

    Just my own observations...
