    Hi all,

Just experienced this weirdness and from what I have been reading I see that the problem may be driver related with this HD5870 vid card??..

Has anyone found out the solution or if they have released a new set of drivers that will fix it?

    Thanks in advance

    Mike

Might as well mentally prepare yourself to RMA it. I had the same problem with mine. Sometimes I would get the hard lock WITH gray screen, sometimes without. A driver is not going to fix the issue even though the 10.3's are supposed to address it. It didn't fix mine. Call your reseller and set up an RMA. I struggled with several reloads, memory tests, every diagnostic you could imagine. Sorry for your luck Mike! :(

hey thanks so much for your quick response... even as we speak I am getting ready to return it to MicroCenters. Might go for the N61JQ-x1.

    I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bummed out.

That is a serious downgrade. Screen res alone would kill that deal for me. If you can hold out a bit, I would wait. You won't be sorry.

Sorry Mike, you will need to RMA it because the GPU is bad. Only real way to prevent it (that I found) is underclock the GPU or run it without a video card driver which isn't realistic.

Wow then I guess I had both the bad motherboard AND bad GPU with my X1 before I sent it back to ASUS.

Actually I have a 23" LG High def monitor that I hook up to my laptops with an HDMI cable .. this N61 does have 4GB DDR3 of mem and a 1GB Vid card, it should do the trick for me. And save me about $500 as well. Oh yeah it is also has an i7 quadcore processor to boot.

    Mike,

I wasn't knocking your choice by any means. I hope you didn't take it that way. The N61 is a great laptop as long as you don't need a heavy gaming system and the resolution isn't a deal breaker for you. (An external monitor fixes that issue). Just know that the 1gb gpu in the N61 is not even on the same planet as the 1gb 5870 in the G73. If that's just fine with you, then you are making a wise decision.

Oh hey no prob there guy.... I know that vid card can't hold a stick to that 5870 DDR5. It really killed me to return it (Microcenters), but their return policy was 7 days on a notebook and I was at Day 6. No probs returning it. I did read a lot of good reviews on this little N61. The quadcore i7 and the 1Gig vid card was enough to sell me on it. (plus a pal of mine has one and he told me it handles any graphic intense game he can throw at it with no probs..

But dang - that G73 is sooooo cool looking, it's just too bad about the probs everyone is experiencing with it.

Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it

Mike - Not trying to persuade you away from Asus, but if you have the technical ability you can build a Clevo 870CU for close to the same price and close to the same specs if you shop around.

It didn't happen to me until I had the rig about 6 days. Then after reading that the real technically gifted folks tried everything they could to fix it and could not, I opted to return it before my 7 day store grace period expired. Way too much money to fumble around with boxing it up and the ilk, then waiting for it to be returned and maybe being fixed.

(it did kill me to return it though, honestly) - ;(

Had my x1 about 10 days now and it's getting RMA'd. IMO, the hard drive has failed, as I cannnot boot even from linux (ubuntu). The hard drive seems to be making a clicking type noise. So it looks like I'll be without my new rig for a couple of weeks.

I have had some minor problems waking up from sleep with it, and several times it has just randomly shut off. A couple of these times windows informed me of the problem as startup giving me the options to boot into safe mode, etc. Again, not sure if it is anything more than a hard drive issue, but hopefully Asus gets if fixed quickly. Coming from my Dell XPS M1710 which had 7 day a week service, this will kinda suck having to send it back in and wait.

    Ohh - and hopefully they fix the laggy keyboard and unresponsive touchpad too. ;}

BB usually replaces units easily...and your problem sounds like a genuine one. Be confident, explain the issue to them, and they should replace your unit.

Having said that, have you recently updated your GPU drivers? or OC it?

    Also: Faulty warranty - LOL!

Uhmm..im pretty sure i updated the CCC ATI to 10.6 the newest ones...probably thats the issue...since ive strolled the forums..and many said its not stable..i think that was my mistake...but actually even before i installed those new updates...i had that grey screen of death...so i bet its the GPU or the v-card itself... sighs...hopefully it gets really taken care of..coz i sumtimes BB has a attitude towards returning RMA customers..pardon my language =S.

If you had GSODs before you updated the drivers (i.e. GSOD with stock configuration), then its definitely a faulty GPU. RMA asap, its your right as a consumer.

    Caveat Venditor!

I had the same problem as you guys.

    I have the G73JH-X1

My setup is as follows (although I don't think this matters):

Clean Install of OS: Windows 7 64 Ultimate
Removed one of the stock HD and replaced with a SSD

Updated the videos drivers fom the ASUS supplied version (10.2 I think) to the ATI 10.6

Sypmtoms: Most days when I played World of Warcraft (WoW). I would start the game. Notice some flickering (1-30 minutes from when I started) and eventually the computer would lock up hard (grey screen, green vertical lines, etc.) I would have to press te power button and perform and hard reset to get the compter to respond again.

I read a ton of posts looking for sultions and then stumbled upon a guy with a G73JH-X1 in the Final Fantasy XIV forums with similar problems with his game.

    The link is here.

Basically, the drivers provided by ASUS have hard coded Engine timng and Memory Clock settings. Not sure of the technology at play, but those settings are not adjustable by drivers not provided by ASUS (ie ATI).

The stock settings of the ATI cards in G73JH's are Engine: 700 and Memory Clock: 1000. Version 10.6 requires those settings to be adjusted to 700/1020. If not, the card becomes unstable.

So we have a couple choices to select from:
    1. Continue to use the ASUS drivers
    2. Install the new drivers, and download and install the "AMD GPU Clock Tool" and force the 700/1020 settings. The catch here is that the settings do not stick between reboots. You have to set it each time the computer starts.
    3. Lastly, the forum post referenced above gives some instruction on how to flash the vBIOS in the card so they will stick between reboots.

Keep in mind that each driver version may require different Engine/Memory Clock settings. The 700/1020 provided above are specific to version 10.6.

I downloaded the tool fom guru3d.com. The link is here.

I chose option 2. Flashing the vBIOS is a bit scarry for me right now. Anyway, everything is running perfect now.

    Hope this helps.
