Okay, so randomly, whether I boot into windows, or if I'm in the middle of playing a game, I get this LOUD (obnoxious) sound that comes from the speakers... It literally sounds like a terrible rock band. Even if the speakers are muted, the sound persists. The only way I can get it to stop is if I hold the power button down and shut down the computer.

Has anyone else had this issue? I researched it, and others just posted about crackling sound, I'm not sure if this is the same thing.

Do I need to RMA my Laptop?

That does not sound too good, If it were me i would reinstall the audio drivers, if it happens again i would do a clean install of win7 and the asus support (driver) disk and then if it happened again i would RMA.

Could be a hardware issue. If you leave the computer running in the BIOS, or if you run Linux (e.g., live Ubuntu) does it happen? If so then probably it's hardware and you do need to RMA.

I have moved this thread to the main ASUS forum, it was posted in the wrong section.

    a2 also,because mine is a2 model
i did reinstall audio drivers after it happened. ps. it was not cracking noise that people are complaining. this is a very continous loud noise that does not response to vol control ( even i mute it and still unchange) until i turn off the computer. like i said only happened to me once. hopefull it is the last (my feeling telling me that i might happened again).

There is a post somewhere that describes how to fix this problem but I can't seem to find it. It worked for me.

    1. download new driver Vista, Windows7 Driver(64bits) Driver only (Executable file)
    2. once saved, right click it on properties and change the compatibility to Vista SP2.
    2. uninstall the realtek driver from the control panel - uninstall programs.
    3. uninstall sound driver from device manager.
    4. Install the new driver.
    5. go into control panel -> hardware and sound -> sound. there should be two items titled speakers under the playback tab. change the default from the one selected to the other and mute the sound in the non-default speakers.
