Hey, I just put a 470m in a G73JW... it gives me the "Valid MXM structure not found" error at POST, can't boot Windows.
If anyone has an idea, please let me know.
Attached is a photo of the error message as well as all the info nvflash gives me.

Is it possible that the system BIOS sees an unknown hardware ID and won't allow to boot because of this?
I could try changing IDs in the vbios, but I can't imagine it will really help... and I have no idea whether the card will work with modified IDs.
Edit: Using a modified JH heatsink.
Flashed the vbios a couple of times, with some unusual mods... Asus as vendor and subvendor doesn't make a difference, even when I changed the device ID nothing changed. I have no idea what Asus did with their BIOS and vbios... they must've somehow restricted the system to work only with their 460m.
Would be interesting to see whether for example a Dell 460m works in the system, unfortunately I don't have access to a different 460m. -
congratulations for the courage! I hope you can give us a good news soon!
tell me one thing, Have you tried Reinstalling the Windows installation DVD For?
it is possible to do an installation of Windows?
Change the ID card will not solve your problem, I've tried here to use another power VBIOS.
One more thing is good.
If something is already appearing on the screen, is a good start.
This gives us a hope of Work.
Good luck to you.
Never give up -
No, I haven't tried installing Windows from the DVD yet. I can't see how this should help since the error comes at POST, but maybe I'll try it if I put the card back in the system. May take a while until I find enough time to do it again, maybe I can do it tomorrow, I don't know.
I just put the 6970m in the JW again and made sure the display connector etc is plugged in correctly... but still the same symptoms as the first time I tried. No picture, but Windows seems to boot... that's crazy, with the 470m I can go to the BIOS, boot DOS and use nvflash etc. but can't boot Windows and with the 6970m I don't have a picture at all, not even the Asus logo, but Windows seems to boot.
Btw, is there a way to permanently set USB as the first boot priority? It seems to reset it everytime... this could be very helpful. -
I've also tried to set a USB device as primary boot, more is always reset to the HD.
plus I've memorized so that the system's boot (the sound of a asus) I press ESC and choose the second option (if not I'm seeing on the screen) So I Can I have a flash on the screen without seeing anything.
If you can get the Windows Setup screen using the GTX470m, this would be a Great Achievement. No Doubts!
Use an ATI card I've more Remotely Difficult, must have some coding that prevents the BIOS That. or some sort of chip that identifies the card NVIDIA.
Again Good Luck.
If you can, add me on Messenger, I keep track of your experiences.

This might sound stupid, but since you can get into bios with the 470m, have you tried booting off a linux cd to see if you get the same error? Might not be as versatile as a USB drive, but if you set the boot priority to the dvd drive, it shouldn't reset. It galls me that don't have a 6970m to try in my JH. Oh and one more questions, that 470m, is it a clevo card?
-
It's a Clevo card, that's the only manufacturer which has the 470m as far as I know. -
Well, since you can boot DOS, it should be possible to boot Windows Setup or Linux.
Someone tried a MSI 5870m in a JH once and it worked fine.
Perhaps you could check the output of nvflash on the stock card and see what are the differences.
Or try doing what thx1137 did.
I'd love to see this work. -
Since the error is already coming at POST I can't imagine that a reinstallation of Windows changes anything.
thx1137 only changed the vbios so that the beeping at post stops, this won't help, other than in this case his card was working despite of the error message. -
It's still most probably the VBIOS that is causing the problem, since that error message is NVidia specific and laptop brand independent. Probably has something to do with Clevo.
It's unfortunate that no alternative VBIOSes are available, unlike for the 460m and 485m.
