    Hello,

I recently purchased the G73JW A1. I have noticed that if I do not have it plugged in to the power supply when playing games that my FPS drop by half or more making it virtually unplayable. I read of a similar problem on the JH series. That fix was to install the most current Bios. I've done some research (googling) and I have not read of a fix for this for the A1. The most current bios for the A1 is the 203. I didn't read in those notes though that it will fix my issue. Has anyone had a similar problem? I spoke with ASUS and they said to send it to them :( for repair. There fix also was to just "leave it plugged in while gaming." To me, being tethered to a power outlet just to game, is an unacceptable answer for owning a portable laptop. I've had this latop for 3 days and was not wanting to send it off this soon. Any help would be appreciated.

Unrelated note, I'm getting some of the bugs that the JH series has, Laggy keyboard missing letters etc. Are the fixes for the JH the same for the JW?

    Thanks in advance.

you must be crazy to play high demanding games on baterry mode
it will reduce the baterry very quickly

ofcourse that you will get drops in FPS when uplugged becouse your powerplay changes to baterry mode and reduces the performance to get the most of your baterry

you can set while unplugged on high performance ...but as i said i would never play like that a game

    A) Set it to high performance. That'll fix a bunch of the problems.
    B) You bought a desktop replacement notebook. A 17 inch beast. And you honestly expected it to be a powerhouse gaming machine on battery? I think (in the future) you should research your purchase prior to getting it. There are NO laptops (Zero. None.) that will allow you to game for extended periods of time away from a power plug, using a modern game. Sure, you can play solitaire on your netbook for 6 hours straight. But you'll only be able to get enough power out of your g73 battery for 40 minutes or so of hardcore gaming.

Wow. That makes my question sound pretty ridiculous. I was just under the impression that even if not plugged in to a power source (just using my battery) that I could still game at the same FPS, albeit for a shorter amount of time. This makes sense. I've never owned a laptop before that switched power settings after unplugging it. That seems to me like the first thing Asus should have told me (powerplay settings). Thanks guys for your quick response.

That's all I really wanted as I use this laptop during my lunch break and I don't like to have to stay in my office to game during that period of time. 40m would be plenty :)

If I could ask one more thing. Is my laggy keyboard fixed the same way that the JH series is fixed?

This forum is already better then Asus tech support. Again thanks for the logical answer. Sorry if my english isn't good. I'm blaming the keyboard and it's not my native tonuge. :p

You can game at the same speed on battery as AC. You just have to change the power saving settings in control panel for High Performance (make sure you set it to high performance first and then change it). Just go to advanced power options for High Performance profile and make the Battery settings the same as Plugged in and you should be good. Another thing you should adjust is the core parking, there's a in-depth tutorial in the sticky thread about turning it off. Seriously though, I don't recommend gaming while on battery mode at all. The quick draining of battery causes it to heat up (degrades battery life faster), and quick discharge will degrade the battery even more. A deep discharge (using it from 100% to 20%) (considering you'll have to go that low to even get 30min gameplay out of the battery), will also degrade the life of the battery. There are just too many battery killing concerns involved with it.

Actually... nvidia's drivers control the throttling on the GPU when it's on battery. You would need to edit the registry to change this, and would have to do it every time you update the drivers. And you can thank nvidia for not having a nice option in their control panel for toggling this, unlilke AMD's PowerPlay options.

I keep seeing warnings posted about deep discharges, just wonderning is there a magic percentage you should go down to? I am getting a replacement battery from ASUS and do not want to ruin it .
I have run mine down to 8% at least 30 time, still getting 2 hours downclocked to 125/200. (reason for repacment is not related to longevity)

Thanks for the heads up. I tried changing my powerplay/battery settings and could not make the card stay at the same FPS as it was when it was plugged in. I have two questions I'd like to ask since you guys have been so helpful so I'm hoping to get some sort of reply. :)

    1. Is there a guide to edit that registery setting that anyone would know of.

    2. Are the guides that fix the laggy keyboard/trackpad the same for the JW as they are for the JH?

*Edit Double thanks to you Chastity for answering my question on the ROG forums as well!

Again, thank you guys for all your help.

Deep discharges were a thing of NiCd batteries. Li-Ion/Li-Poly batteries should be kept topped up, and used as little as possible to prevent wear.

Thanks man, with the limited battery life, I guess i will use it as a defacto UPS when I get my new battery. You are one of the few here that do not just read the OP and respond after 25 other chime in. Sorry if this is a hijack, this is the first forum I have ever used extensively and I do not want to get banned.
BTW what is a flame war ?? :)D

Hi, just wondering if anyone fixed this or if this thread is still active. I have an Asus G73JW-3DE and it has this problem, making most games unplayable on battery power!

I have a friend who bought almost the same laptop (cant remember which one) but he has the ATI graphics version of this and does not have the same problem! I've tried all the ways to disable powermizer including editing the registry by hand, and none of it has worked.

I'd like to know what the hell to do, because this kind of defeats the purpose of being mobile.

    Thanks
    Andy

It's NVIDIA powermizer. There used to be ways around this but I'm not so sure they work anymore. Maybe someone else can chime in who owns a newer nvidia card.
