I was surfing the web with my 1 month old JW when i noticed a buzzing sound coming from the right fan. i turned off the laptop immediately and waited. When turned on again, the buzzing sound was louder, so i turned it off again.

I blew inside the vents a bit, in case something was stuck in it, but now the right fan has stopped working ... :(

i have looked all over the net for a way to monitor fan activity or some sort of fan control application, and SpeedFan was the only close result and even that didn't help. (it doesn't recognize the fans)

is there any suggestions you can give me other than a RMA, because that would be kinda impossible ...

    Thank you

HWiNFO32 is a good tool to monitor / log temperatures and fan speeds.

If the fan stopped working altogether, you need a replacement. It could be a dying fan if it was making a grinding noise, there's a chance after a few starts you might get it to work again, but who knows for how long.

It could also just be at very low RPM, but it should be audible when you turn it on.

i just ran HWiNFO32 and these are the results.
i noticed the GPU fan (which is the right side i think) is fixed at %100. is this normal or does it mean the fan is disabled ?

EDIT - OH GOD, i just saw the picture posted before (didn't load last time) and noticed there is no GPU fan listed in my report !!!
i think replacement is the only option ...

    thanks anyway people

HWInfo32 gets the right fan rpm through the EC-Registers.
Forget about the 30 or 100% at the GPU. This is just a value in the vBIOS. Always the same.

If no gpu fan is listed, then the fan isn't running at this time. Wait a bit till you hear the fan. The entry should appear. I don't think your fan isn't running because of low temps.

Well if the RPMs of the fan for the gpu arent being shown, then its likely because you started the program and the fan wasnt spinning (as it didnt need to be); my suggestion, keep it on, do something GPU intensive, then look again, if it still doesnt show up and the temps have sky rocketed then id say yes you have a problem with the fan...

This suggestion comes from the fact that mine too usually isnt shown (because the fan is completely off), until I do something that uses the GPU, it wont show

Also that 100% GPU Fan Utilization, as DCx pointed out, is always read incorrectly on the G73, afaik

Edit: Didnt refresh the page -__- and @tilla beat me to it lol

OK, so its been on for a couple of hours, the GPU temp has risen from around 40C on start-up to about 60C.

Still no sign of the GPU fan. Any input ?

    Thanks.

    Well that is interesting

Idk what the fan start up temp is for the 460 in the JW, but its about 55-58C (afaik) on the 5870 in the JH, I believe the vBios (edit: actually I think this is determined by the Bios...one of the two lol) determines this so it would likely be different on the JW

Perhaps the fan wont start till 65C? Id say do something that makes it get a little hotter, if it reaches 70C and still nothing, then either theres something wrong with the program (highly unlikely, im assuming you have the latest version correct?) or, more likely, fan problem.

My G73JW's GPU idles @ ~45C and ~2000 RPM. The GPU fan never drops below 2000 RPM, it's always on. It's a bit annoying, it seems like the lowest fans speeds is 2000 RPM for both CPU and GPU. The CPU fan sometimes turnes off, but after a while turnes on at 2000 RPM. I would be great if you could lower the fans to 1000 RPM.

@that_guy - when my CPU goes to passive mode the RPM does not appear on the HWiNFO32 but the GPU fan speed is always there @2000+ RPM. It seems your GPU fan is broken.

    I have a JH - Bios 209.
The GPU fan starts from 46-47C. Turn off point is approx. 43C.
If I start HWInfo32 while fan is off, no entry is shown. But I've noticed the entry becomes visible if the GPU fan firstly starts.
The GPU fan starts at hearable 2600rpm while CPU fan starts with 2000rpm. Imo the CPU fan is more silent at all. GPU fan is more a rough guy.

    Btw.
    A passive GTX460m at 90C isn't that bad.

My 5870 idles at 44-48C (while underclocked) and the fan is kept off, at stock clocks idle at 54C, but if thats the case for the JW, then id have to agree unfortunatly, GPU fan problem :(

    EDIT:

@that_guy; seems so :( sorry, likely have to RMA or attempt a repair yourself

@tilla; this is why I edited my other post, its the BIOS that determines the fans, as im on 211 and know my fans dont turn on till the mid 50's as I can idle in the mid to high 40's with no fan. I thought 211 started the fans earlier though? perhaps thats just for the upper limits then

Are there two fans on each side of the Asus G73? Because I have never ever felt air blowing out of the right vent. Then again I havent played any games on the comp yet. Only thing ive been doin is running VMWare and playin movies.

The right side looking at it from the back where the vents are, or with the perspective from the front where the keyboard is?

Yes theres two fans, and yes (assuming your talking about from the back) youll hardly ever hear/feel the cpu fan, thats part of how good the G73's cooling is

After how long? The fan may well be broken, but on the JH those temps are borderline but acceptable.

Granted, it's a different graphics card, but If you're capped after 10 minutes at these temps and not getting stability or shutdown issues then either the gfx card isn't generating enough heat [unlikely, unless it's underclocking itself proactively]] Or it's receiving enough air through the heat sink to keep it in operational temps.

My question is, how did you clean the vents? Compressor air? Vacum? Your lungs?

I dont own G73, but I use compressed air to clean the fan, if you can see the fan when u open the bottom cover of the laptop, it will be easier for u to clean it , otherwise, u need to follow the G73 manual to disassemble the machine.

Thanks for the reply, I was asking the OP how he cleaned it as no one asked that question yet.

how/where can you find replacement fans... I think both of mine blew out during a power outage that happened almost a year ago, the computer worked for a while afterwards, but maybe for the past 5 months or so it just won't operate.

I bought a new adapter since the last one fried, but now it seems the issue is with the fans, I turn the laptop on and after 5-7 minutes it just dies
