Anyone do any testing with the USB 3.0 port? I can't get mine to keep my external drive connected...seems to freeze up and then disconnect. Also while the drive is frozen (no activity) my network dies as well as launch new programs. Like the USB 3.0 controller locks the system or something...anyone else have this issue?

Sounds like a forced chipset reinstall (the only type) ought to fix it.

There is a setting in the BIOS for USB 3.0 and they recommend to switch to the other setting if you have issues with the default one..

I have not tried it myself but you may want to give it a shot...

Try EHCI mode to see if it makes any difference. it also says in the BIOS : If there is any problem to work on XHCI mode, please set it to EHCI mode.

    Yeah...I tried the EHCI mode...and while it works...i get USB 2.0 speeds...like 20 MB a sec rate...on USB 3.0 i was getting about 70-80 mb/sec rate...

so do people just not have USB 3.0 devices? Does anyone have one they can try and move like a 10 gig file/s across?

I used it with a USB 2.0 flash drive and it did the same thing! The drive spontaneously disappeared from explorer which killed the transfer. I switched the mode in the BIOS and that seems to have fixed it. Looks like some type of driver/bios issue. I don't think it has really come up yet because not a lot of people are making use of it yet. I thought that maybe the problem was related to my using a usb 2.0 thumb drive in the the port (even though it is supposed to be backwards compatible) but I guess not

Bought a Kingston USB 3.0 Thumb drive, switched the BIOS back to XHCI and tried it. Works like a charm! Uploaded an 8GB file in about 2 minutes- very impresssed. No problems with the drive "disappearing" during the process.

USB 3.0 is still petty new and not fully supported yet (Intel for example), so there are bound to be bugs and quirks for a while. I would recommend saving your receipt for any USB 3.0 device you buy until you're sure it works reliably with your laptop.

I expect all laptops are going to be seeing driver and BIOS updates that address these various issues over the next year or so.

yeap you're right chastity. Updated to latest chipset driver didn't make any difference. I'm totally clueless now.
I've tried OS fresh install as well. Still doesn't work.

Any of you out there managed to get it to work?

I just got a lacie minimus 1tb usb 3.0 and I'm getting pretty sad speeds compared to what I hear others getting.

At first, transferring a file from the laptop to the lacie, speeds would start out at 120mbps and quickly drop down to around 20 and stay there.

I downloaded the fresco drivers from your link there Chastity, and now my transfer started at like 10mbps and has gone up to 17.1 and stayed there. But hey, my usb 2.0 stick was going at 10mbps, so I guess it's still an improvement, eh?

Checked the lacie site for any kind of drivers... nothin

I haven't touched any bios settings.. and I haven't done a fresh windows install either.

I am using G53JW. Seems I have the same problem like G73, if I use a USB3.0 hard drive, it will disconnected randomly by it self. A very big problem. Is any one have the solution now?

I just got my laptop last week and I find when I use usb3.0 hard drive in usb3.0 port, it will disconnect and connect repeatlly and randomlly. If I plug in usb2.0 port it works fine.

I do some research on the internet, I found some people have this problem.

Please everyone who use G53/G73, go get a usb3.0 hard drive and plug in your laptop try to transmit something and tell me if you have this problem? or can anyone tell me you can use usb3.0 hard drive without any problem?

I am confusing if all G53jw/73 have this problem, but you just didn't test it.
    please test and report here!

My bios don't have a option could let me change xHCI/eHCI can any one tell me where is it?

BTW, my bios is 210, and I use the newest fresco driver, still have this problem!!!!!!!

Has anyone rectified the issues with USB 3.0 yet?

I have a G73JW and recently purchased a WD My Passport Essential SE 1TB USB 3.0 drive.
So far it constantly disconnects and reconnects when plugged into the USB 3.0 port.
I've updated Fresco Logic drivers to 3.3.14.0 and updated the firmware on the WD drive to the latest and it's still no good.
Works fine on USB 2.0 though.

My g53sw gets about 25MB/s transfer read/write on the usb 3.0 port.
When I plug it in a message
"This device can perform faster in a 3.0 superspeed port"
I'm using the blue port with a blue cable, and everything is labelled SS.

I have a verbatim 1TB usb 3.0 external HDD. it has external power.#SUSB1TB

My driver is V3.0.119.1 and a 1.5GB file takes 60 sec to transfer from the laptop to the external, and about 65 seconds to transfer from the external to the laptop.

Anyone able to get 3.0 speed on a asus g53sw-a1 yet? What external drive do you use?

This is not a window's driver problem. I dual boot Linux and win7 and have had the same issue with multiple drives (Western Digital, Toshiba, Talent) on both OS's. I have tried multiple kernels and window's drivers. Does anyone know if there are issues with the chipset or the bios?

The USB3.0 in my G53JW works perfectly fine. It always has. No random disconnections, no slow transfers, nothing. I have a 1tb WD My Passport Essentials with USB3.0 and a 1tb Samsung M2 USB3.0 and both perfect without any hitches on the USB3.0 port.

I'd say you're one of the lucky ones. I have the My Passport 3.0 and I can't get it to work properly either in usb 3.0 mode. I've done reinstalled using the image on the HD and a fresh win 7 install with the latest usb 3.0 drivers and it's done me no good.

I know i am. :) you could try using a powered usb hub. Chastity used to ask everyone with usb3.0 problems to try that.

Haven't tried a powered USB 3.0 hub but I tried using a usb 3.0 micro-B y-cable for my Seagate Goflex Desk, as someone suggested to help supplement the power. It didn't make a difference. As a matter of fact, the device only connects when both USB 3.0-A ends are plugged into my computer. But that's the only difference I'm seeing. It still randomly freezes and disconnects when the main USB 3.0-A end of the cable is connected to my G74's USB 3.0 port.

    The USB 3.0 port is spec'd to output 5v @ .5A

Some external HDDs (WD USB 1TB for example) need .7A this is why some drives have issue. On the G74SX, it has the USB AI Charger option. This bumps the amps up to 0.9A.

If the drive is not USB 3.0 native, use the 2.0 ports if you are having issues.

If it's 3.0, return it for another model, and blame the drive maker for being out of spec. (Seagate's 1TB drive works just fine)

    Case: 1599979

    Hi all,
I wonder the same AI Charger option for my G53JW, it did NOT came with AI Charger installed and i bet mine may not be an AI-Charger compatible notebook.

What i really know is whether it's possible to charge my mobile devices such as my usb-charging Nokia phone when my Asus G53JW is powered OFF, i looked almost everywhere around my G53JW's BIOS (bios 209), there's NO option to leave USB ports stay ON when my notebook was shutdown to charge my USB devices. Doesn't G53JW have that feature?

    Hope you give some insight.

I just noticed that in the Republic of Gamers G73 Drivers page by Chastity there is a Fresco USB 3.0 version 3.5.4.0 (dated 10/27/11) listed as the latest driver available for the G73JW, but when I tried to downloaded I get an error message "550 /pub/ASUS/nb/Drivers/USB3.0/USB3_Fresco_Win7_64_Z3540.zip: The network name cannot be found." There a few links to drivers on this page that no longer work, but it appears that the page is still maintained.

Has anyone installed this driver in a G73JW? Does it fix the sudden disconnects problems? Is there another updated link where I can download this specific drivers? The latest driver listed in the ASUS Support site is 3.0.105.11.

Download the latest driver here : FRESCO LOGIC
    Version is 3.5.24.0 Dec 16, 2011
    Release Notes are also available
I have updated mine without a glitch, everything works fine but I need further testing about disconnections.
Don't forget to use Driver Sweeper (preferably in Safe Mode) after uninstalling the old version.

Yeah, that is what foldertree means, there should be a link to a recent enough version on the driver page at the rog forums.

I'm not certain driver sweeper is required, unless the update doesn't work as it should, i usually don't use such utilities and so far, i've never had any problems.

I'm having the exact same problem. I plugged in my Toshiba Canvio Plus USB 3.0 1TB portable drive into my ASUS G53JW USB 3.0 port for the first time ever and was able to transfer a large folder (5GB with 80 files inside).

However, as soon as the transfer was over and I began browsing inside the TB it started connecting and disconnecting repeatedly. I've never connected the TB to USB 3.0 before, only USB 2.0 ports on other computers. When I plug this TB into the ASUS's USB 2.0 ports it works just fine. Only the USB 3.0 port on the ASUS is fowling up when I plugin my USB 3.0 TB.

Bummer. I'm going to investigate my drivers.

Just updated to the latest drivers listed by @foldertree and still have no luck. It's cutting in and out like crazy. :p When it's connected I'm getting transfer speeds of like 70mpbs, but it only stays connected for 10 seconds or so before dropping out again.

For me, it is the other way round. My WD MyPassport 1TB USB3.0 and two other WDs worked perfectly on my USB3.0 port whereas my SeaGate GoFlex USB3.0 and a couple of Samsung M2 USB3.0 did not. :(

Hi all, I might add even more mystery to the USB 3.0 case.

I have a G73JW, and USB 3 drives worked like a charm until a week ago. Then, I had to reinstall WIndows. As the recoverey DVDs did not work (as the laptops has two disk drives and the disks work only for computers with one drive! Aaaah...), I did the following:

    - Clean install Windows 7 SP1
    - Installing All Asus drivers, including Fresco USB 3.0, from the Asus support site

    Result:
    - Fresco USB 3.0 hub & controller works fine according to device manager
    - USB 2.0 devices work fine on the USB 3.0 port
    - USB 3.0 devices are NOT recignized on the USB 3.0 port

USB 3.0 devices work fine on USB 2.0 ports, but with USB 2.0 speed.

I have tried various Fresco drivers, e.g. 3.0.114.13 or 3.5.24.0, to no avail...
and it is all with the same USB 3.0 drives that used to work flawlessly on the same port just before the clean install. So it must be a driver issue.

Any help in getting USB 3.0 devices run on the USB 3.0 port are much appreciated.

this is exactly what happened to me. I used my G73JW before performing a clean install. Now my drive drops out and i don't know which driver was working for me. not using the port at all now. don't want to deal with it.

i have a simular problem. while my drives dont dosconect, since re doing windows last week and updating to all new drivers and what not, My usb 3 drives start at a transfer of 80-100 and slowly drop down till they sit at 20mbs for the rest of the transfer.

currently i have 3 drives on a usb 3 hub. but it does the same thing if i have 1 directly connected transferring to the laptops hd.

iv tried several usb 3 drivers, non of which make a difference.

I was having dramas with USB3.0 on my g73jw since I bought it. I could either have slow speeds using EHCI, or random BSODs if I enabled xHCI in BIOS.

I've just done a clean installation of Win7 Home Premium and used the Fresco 3.5.30 driver from here (15/3/12). Now everything works fine with xHCI enabled in BIOS, getting good (70-120MBps) speeds through the USB3.0 port. I also flashed to BIOS 205 before the clean install.

Side note, do any models actually have the Superspeed symbol on the side of the case? Mine just has all 4 USB ports labelled with the USB2.0 symbol.

it appears this driver fixed my issues. no longer dropping out. However, speeds range from high 30s to high 40s. Not that impressive. I am fine with just being able to use it properly though. Spent too much time trying to fix it.

    ______
    update: it is still dropping.

I'm going to try the suggested driver. I know that 3.5.20 was not working for me.

I usually get around 100s BUT cannot copy large file over USB3. By large file, I mean anything greater than 2GB. Explorer seems to freeze while the drive's light remains steady. However, small files (and it doesn't seems to matter how many GB there is) are transferring fine.

Also, I cannot "format" over USB3. Explorer hangs and I have to force reboot. Looks like any task that take too long creates a "drop out". Bummer.

I'm with homie_g: I'm ready to take a hit in speed to get better reliability. So I'll try 3.5.24 even if I have small hopes. If it doesn't work, I'll try the latest 3.5.56. I'll keep you posted.

This thread has been idle for a couple months, but this G73JW USB 3.0 issue appears not to have been resolved ... Does anyone have any updates? I just got a new WD My Passport 1.5TB USB 3.0 drive as a gift. It works fine on the USB 2.0 ports of my G73JW, but fails miserably on the USB 3.0 port. I just installed the latest Fresco drivers (V3.5.73.0) and ran the addpatch.bat which executes the commands AsPatch10430001.exe -s and AsusUSBPatch.exe /I - I also updated the BIOS to version 205. I'm using Win7 Ultimate 64bit with SP1. I also installed and tested couple earlier Fresco drivers at the beginning of the year (see my posts above) with the same results. Back then I wanted to transfer over 100GB of data to my G73 from a USB 3.0 drive that my friend loaned me. I gave up trying to get it work as I had to return that drive after I got the data using the USB 2.0 ports.
