Starting on Thursday morning my G73 started to suffer from horrible performance no matter what I do. It was obvious when I was scrolling up and down on my internet browser. I tried to play Battlefield 2, APB: Reloaded, and One Unit Whole Blood. All three of which was running with unplayable and horrendous FPS's.
I called ASUS support and the representative advised for me to do a clean install, which I did but the performance stutters was still there. On Sunday I decided to do two things: The first was clearing the dust by blowing compressed air into my two vent, and the second was core parking. When I logged back on to APB:R later, the game was actually in a playable state but there was still a slight stutter about every 5-seconds or so, so I know the problem isn't completely gone.
What I want to know is what was actually causing the performance problems starting Thursday, are there any ways to eliminate it completely, and what can I do to figure out the problems?
P.S. I am not sure how to upgrade the firmware of my HDD, so any help would be appreciated.

Check your temps first of all run HWINFO and keep the sensors tab running at idle and load.
Are both your fans running? These will also show up in the HWINFO sensors.
I would look at the performance issue GPU/CPU before thinking about your HDD telling you reinstall windows is standard advice and not very helpful. -
I would NOT do a clean install to resolve this problem it probably won't help.
First of all you need to find out what your gpu temps are during gaming.
I use evga precision but that is only 1 of many gpu monitoring/overclocking apps out there.
If your temps are too high say > 90 deg c that means that you need to try harder to clean your vents and perhaps consider a repaste. -
Thanks for the replies. I wish I could have known before I did a clean install
I installed HWinfo and I am not sure where the info about my fans show up in. I will probably do a test on my GPU temperature in a little while. There are currently no games other than APB:R and Blood. I will install something later. -
Install HWINFO. Run it. Tick the box that says sensors only and it will clearly say FANS. Make sure both CPU and GPU are showing.
I would bet you have a fan not working or temps are way too high because the CPU wont throttle till 100oC and the GPU 110oC.
You will need to make sure you are running in performance mode if you have done a clean install. Run a game with the sensors up and check the high temps. -
"GPU Fan Speed" correct? It's showing 30.0% for current, min, and max. I will report back later today once I install and try out some games. I am planning to try it out with Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Retribution, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, and Metro 2033. Would these be good?

Yeah, okay. I see it now. For the CPU it shows 2840 RPM for min, 3401 RPM for max. While for GPU it hows 2861 RPM for min, 3092 RPM for max.

Okay, I played two mission on Retribution which is about a hour.
My max temp for CPU was said to be 70.0, 70.0, 75.0, and 72.0C for Core 0~3, while my GPU was said to be 82.0C
I will try it with Space Marine and Metro 2033 later. On a side note, Retribution was mostly in a playable state except for the existing stutter. -
Try disabling some of your other processes, like the Asus apps, plus disable Wifi card.

Also, run HD tune, (even the trial version) and post a screen of the benchmark HD test, so we can see if you have the same spikes I had, that forced me to swapping HDD.
It is a common problem, seems odd none pointed it out already.
Also I know it seems stupid but... on default powerfor gear use "entertainment" as power plant option, have you selected this to "high performance"?
Lastly, what about vBios and which version of ATI catalyst are you on? -
If 82c is as hot as your gpu got that's good and cooling is not an issue.

Try running ThrottleStop with the log file option checked while gaming. You will then have a record if your CPU is being throttled and slowed down while gaming. This seems to happen randomly to some users. If you are not sure what the ThrottleStopLog.txt file is telling you, upload it to MediaFire or somewhere convenient and post a link here. If the GPU temperature cools down while gaming, that can be a sign that your GPU is being throttled.

I Have ASUS G73JH RB05 and i play some supergames without problems.
Sometimes the tune up software askme if i want put energy management in diferent state for max performance, and my computer is in ASUS HIGH PERFORMANCE, and tune up change it.
But i just only have problems when energy managemente isnt in HIGHT PERFORMANCE and my games runs but laggy. try to open energy management and search in High performance if all the options are in high or max when energy isnt from battery.
When a game is running with lagg do ALT + TAB and CTRL + ALT + DEL and put task administrator and see the process, maybe you find something un cpu usage or memory in extreme use of recurses.
I hope you can repair your problem, because is a great machine when you repair all errors. and sorry for my english, im latinamerican.
