I'm a new owner so I haven't read through all the threads, but I was able to fix the Steam lockup issue by installing the latest Realtek HD Audio driver straight from the website. Don't bother to uninstall the Creative stuff (which still works btw) or the current driver, just install right over it and your golden.

This is old news, the Creative driver locks it up alone.

hmmm....so you installed the realtek over the creative and enabling bass works?
If so I need to get the creative drivers again :(

Can you give me the exact link to the G73JH drivers at the realtek ite?

Update: I found and installed the realtek drivers....now I all I need is the creative driver to enable the boost to see if this problem has been fixed with the newer realtek driver.

I'm not exactly sure where to get the creative part. I didn't see it on the asus support site for download, so I took a gamble and installed right over it.

And yes, Bass Boost and everything works. Just tested it with my headphones

    Can you go here:

Control Panel -> Ease of Access Center

    Without a lockup?

before doing this enable bass in creative and select 7db.

Can someone upload the Creative Soundblaster software or give me a link to download. My friend is in Vegas with his A1/Drivers Disc and won't be back for another 2 weeks.

The only thing I can think of is F9 recovery to test this out....but I have too many games installed with updates, settings etc.......to do a recovery for testing purposes.

Ok, so I went to the Realtek link and downloaded the "High Definition Audio Codecs" there titled "Vista, Windows7 Driver (32/64 bits) Driver only (ZIP file)" and the "ATI HDMI Audio Device"
Once I ran setup I noticed there weren't any Realtek drivers to be seen. Just default Microsoft drivers. I went back and read the readme file from the download and read you had to run setup twice. Once to remove old drivers and a second time to install new drivers. Old drivers showed driver version 6.0.1.5978 11/10/09 and new drivers are 6.0.1.6083 4/6/10 for the High Def Audio.
I haven't tried installing Creative yet because I don't have the software with me. Hopefully your success is with the new Realtek drivers and not the interim Microsoft default drivers after running setup the first time.

I also noticed with the default Microsoft drivers that it created two speaker sets one set was the stereo speakers near the LCD and the other set was the single subwoofer under the laptop (interesting)....

I install the new realtek driver and now I have this two speaker sets too. So I cant play speakers and subwoofer at same time. I need to reinstall the driver to fix it?

Run the Setup.exe a second time. First time uninstalled the Realtek software and your system defaulted to original Win 7 default drivers. The second run of setup will install new drivers.

I hate to be a thread necromancer, but I felt the need to put a conclusion at the end of this thread.

The Creative Audigy HD suite works as intended so long as the Realtek Audio drivers are updated. I have tested this thoroughly. No crashes, using both steam and the Ease of Access system (including Audio Narration, which I suspect was the cause of crashes in the past). You do not need to uninstall the Creative Audigy HD package, simply install the latest Realtek HD Audio Driver from Realtek.com.

Uh yeah, enable bass boost and go into Ease of Access and let me know if it locks up or not.

Still does for me with the newest driver.

The Bass Boost requires the EAX Software engine to be active for maximum stability. For that I enable CMSS-3D with Minimized setting. For more info, see link below.

No problems for me but I always have CMSS3d on, as I find it helps with positional Audio in games. I didn't try it without CMSS3d.

I wanted to let everyone know that is tracking this issue that installing "Vista, Windows7 Driver (32/64 bits) Driver only (ZIP file)" and the "ATI HDMI Audio Device" fixed and issue that I was having as well.

My G73jh was locking up while playing back videos over the internet. The laptop would totally freeze not even allowing me to ctrl-alt-del to recover. The audio would freeze on the last sound it was making and would output that sound continuously. Updating with the above drivers fixed my video playback problem, and my laptop has not locked up since.
