    Hi all
Anybody already upgraded his old G73Jh to Win10 from a Win7/Win8.1 installation? All going well?

Why not take a backup and give it a go? You can revert the current install within the first 30 days too.

I just finished my upgrade from W7 to W10 today 4th July, some hours ago. It didn't go smooth - spent trying the last weekend, the same issue I experienced on my wife's Samsung NP530U. Automatically the upgrade failed everyday at the early begginning w/o any notification or with error 8020000E. I tried even to make the installation media flashdisk, but the upgrade failed during the files copy about 13% done.
How I succeeded on both notebooks?
    1. stopped the windows update service from the services.msc
    2. deleted the content of 2 windows update directories:
      c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\
      and
      c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\
After datastore content is deleted, no history of updates was visible, like after fresh new W7 install.
    3. downloaded and installed freshly the windows update agent from the MS site https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/949104
    4. I started the windows update service
    5. in Windows update I did "check for new updates"
    6. Windows 10 upgrade went visible I launched it and it worked - the same way on both notebooks
Windows update then downloaded 2.699 MB
then something like "preparing the installation" appeared
then the recovery point was created
W10 update asked me to accept license conditions and on the next screen I've chosen upgrade now
Then the upgrade went automatically without asking me anything - if to keep data and applications or not, installing W10 updates... (these questions appear only when upgrading from the installation media either via boot or from W7).
The whole process took about an hour, I have the SSD disk for OS.
The W10 got activated automatically - when checking the product key, it was the generic one for W10 Pro (I went from W7 Ultimate).

I was insipired by this youtube when succeeding my upgrade.

It is my first touch with W10 and I like them - I already deleted using the windnows drive space cleaner the restore points and W7 installation - I got about 30GB of HD space recovered.

I turned different deffault applications for my W10 - music and video - VLC, browser - chrome (after upgrade the default browser is the new Edge).

Did you upgrade through the update manager or get the ISO from microsoft?

I went through the Windows Update. From 29.7. to today it was visible the automated update failed. As I deleted the log, I cannot see the history of updates now, but there was error like 8020000E without explaining anything.

Then being desperate I tried to manually update from the flashdisk (I created by downloading from Microsoft site) - both from W7 or by direct booting from the flashdisk with different combinations of selecting keep data vs erase data, use updates vs don't use updates. All this eneded after boot into upgrader (the one with the large circle and percentage). Always interrupted in 13% of files copy (1st of 3 upgrader steps), then the upgrader restored previous OS and an error was displayed
    w10_fail.png

Then I did the steps explained in my first post - cleaning the folders with windows updates, reinstalled the update agent and launched check for updates. And it succeeded on both notebooks.

And I forgot to mention - I tried also the fresh install W7 - w/o any updates -> then using upgrade flashdisk media. Didn't work.
Then I applied all the W7 updates and tried using the both windows update and flashdisk - nothing worked. I cloned my C drive, so I could make those drastic tests, however then it worked from windows updated and all my settings and data were untouched by the upgrade.

But what about the ALL IMPORTANT QUESTIONS??? Does your touchpad work? Do the keyboard lights work? Does all of the hardware work? Is the computer faster or slower with Windows 10?

Sounds like something got corrupted, either the image or something about the original OS.

After the install I got 1 BSOD and 1 freez. My W7 installation was about 2 months old, I'm not capable to see any remarkable differences in performance between W7 and W10.

W10 seems to updated the synaptic, however today (2nd day after W10 upgrade) it doesn't work - W10 suggests to remove the driver and I cannot open the Synaptic dialog due to that failure, but I remember the Synaptic driver date was from July 2015. With touchpad I had some problems even before, in my G73Jh I have the Jw 2-buttons touchpad. It seems its getting sometimes activated by the touch on the palmrest - I'd assume the insulation between the touchpad and the palmrest worn out during years of using.

Other devices seem to be working fine, keyboard has its lights and could be dimmed and lighten back, Realtek audio works (I installed 2.78 at the time of my fresh W7 installation 2 months ago), I see no yellow marks in device manager.

All my HD drives are working, the cardreader works, the camera works. Before the W10 upgrade the AMD catalyst drivers got updated to version 15.07 and the driver seems to be working under W10.

I also tried steam and played one game - it worked so I'd assume the W10 upgrade is ok, appart from getting it done.

In W10 I wasn't capable to find, where to change the display language, because I was used to swap between EN and my local language (W7 Ultimate feature) for certain actions. Now after I logon the display remains in the language I was logged on during the upgrade. On the second notebook I upgraded my wife's account is in our local language while mine account is in EN. I don't know how where in the menu is this settings, that I can swap it.

    EDIT:
I found the human control of display brightness is not working. The Fn+F5 and F6 are showing the bulb and lowering the brightness control, however display brightness isn't getting changed. The same is not working when changing display brightness in power options (battery icon in bottom right corner - togle 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%).

In System->Display it is possible to control brightness from 0% to 100% in steps of 1%. Percentages 98, 99 and 100 do not work at all. After playing with this settings for a while, the keyboard brightness settings started to work and also the one in the battery menu.

I've had a very bad experience with Windows 10 on my G73JH. I have installed Windows 10 Home x64 several times now. The original update and reinstalls go fine with no problems. Once Win 10 is installed things seem fine. But none of the special function function keys work; like keyboard lights, volume adjust/mute, etc. So after a day or so Windows will just freeze and go to a black screen. After a hard boot it will prompt for a chkdsk which usually finds no issues. Sometimes it will boot fine after the chkdsk but mostly it freezes again. I've probably installed Win 10 about 4 or 5 times. I am using a new 240 GB SSD so to eliminate it as an issue I have put Win 7 on it and will run it for a week or so.

You do have installed the videoBIOS update for the AMD GPU card? Or did you ever use a modern Catalyst driver on your old Win7 installation?
Have you enabled the LAN port in BIOS? If so, disable it (if you don't use it). That already didn't anymore work fine under Win8 with the Windows Update drivers.

Not sure about the video BIOS update, I haven't updated anything like that in awhile. What version is it? Mostly done clean formatted drive installs so whatever driver for video that Windows and Windows Update puts out there is what I used. I do have the LAN port enabled but can disable it.

Thats been my experience. Also take a system image (utility is built into windows 10) if you have a chance (before a crash) if you want to trouble shoot it and reload fast.

I've also upgraded to Windows 10 x64 version, and I've discovered how to overcome the issues that other users were having:

    1. FIX: LCD brightness control not working:
    Go to Registry Editor (regedit.exe)
    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000
    Next, go find:
    MD_EnableBrightnesslf2
    KMD_EnableBrightnessInterface2
    Set both to 0.
    Reboot.
ADDITIONAL STEP: In Device Manager, disable your video adapter "Radeon HD 5000 series" and re-enable.
    Retest your LCD brightness settings.

    2. FIX: Windows sometimes hangs when booting or resuming from hibernate.
Completely remove all AMD video drivers. Run the Catalyst Install Manager and "express uninstall all" if you are able.
You'll know if the drivers have been removed as your LCD will drop to a non-native resolution.
Download and install the AMD Windows 10 drivers from the AMD.com website. Filename is amd-catalyst-15.7.1-win10-64bit.exe.
ADDITIONAL STEP: Try disabling "Driver Signature Enforcement" during startup. An alternate method to disable driver signature enforcement:
Open an elevated command-prompt (run as Admin):
execute the command below, and reboot:
    bcdedit.exe -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS

    3. FIX: Asus on-screen display does not work.
    Uninstall the current ATK driver.
Download and install the latest ATK driver from Asus, filename: ATKPackage_Win10_64_VER100039.zip

I have managed to get back to working by removing all traces of the original AMD video drivers and installing the latest from their site. I also disabled driver signature enforcement as it was suggested.

Why disable driver signature? The drivers should have a valid signature and thus not require the extremely big security issue of disabling the signature check.

Running Windows 10 on my old G73JH and it is pretty much flawless. The ancient drivers from ASUS work perfectly, not freezing, no errors, nothing.

Only issues I have with it are problems with Windows 10 itself.

Is there a way to fix the keyboard backlight in the same way you fixed the screen brightness here?
    Is there a similar path?
