    Anyone hear of this model?

I won a G73 from Seagate during their Momentus XT launch, and it's been 11 weeks, 5 days and I JUST got my computer.

I was expecting something like the A1 model, but the specs leave something to be desired...

CPU: Intel Core i5 520m processor
    RAM: 4GB Ram
    GPU: ATI Radeon 5870 @ 1600x900
    OS: WIn Home Premium
    HDD: Seagate Momentus XT 500GB / 4GB
    ODD: Blu Ray ROM
    Net: B/G/N + WiFi + Bluetooth

It's not quite BestBuys (their's has the i7 720QM). I wouldn't call it a 'performance' laptop due to ram/cpu/screen res.
Lucky, I spoke to Joni Clark, who ran the web seminar (for the Momentus XT Launch) is not happy either, as we were told something totally different by the Asus Rep.

So after checking out the machine, I phoned her, and she told me she would be buying a proper machine soon.

BUT My question is again ... has ANYONE heard of this model befor? The "1ATY"?

The specs are definitly lower then a standard A1 model but they appear similar to the G73JH-TY042V sold in Europe but not in North America, the only difference being the Momentus XT hard drive.

It's definitly a downer but the performance loss in current games should be minimal. The GPU is still rock solid, 4GB ram is quite enough for gaming and most games today still don't make full use of the 4 cores of the i7 processors so don't feel too bad and don't forget the most important thing of all... You just got a +/- 1,200$ CAD notebook for FREE. :D

Yeah, sounds like the X3 models, with the faster (but dual core) processor.

The thing that peeves me off the most is the screen ...
I was soooo looking forward to 16:9 and not 16:10. :(

Ok .. after playing around for a bit (It's a fast computer, even with only 2 cores ...) in Computer Device Manager, GPU-z, and System Info ... I only see "ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series" ... it never tells me if it's the 5870 or the 5850 or 5830 ... is there a specific bit of info I should look for?

*EDIT* I searched "ATI Broadway", and it appears it is the 5870 so scratch this post. I'm still not 100% happy, but I"m sure I'll survive.

you could replace the screen with a full HD screen if the 1600x900 bothers you. It'll run you around $100~150 including shipping.

Why would you be disappointed? Your laptop is faster than the QuadCore, and has the same GPU. The screen resolution isn't a big difference, especially considering you won it.

After some digging, I found that Seagate paid "employee pricing" of $1,822.xx USD for this machine, thus, they were paying for an A3 model, and NOT a BestBuy model.

Why would you be unhappy getting a free laptop that still has great specs?

I'm terrible at math, but isn't 1600x900 exactly 16:9? to have a 16:10 you would need 1600x1000, no? Perhaps you actually got what you wanted...

Well, Seagate is changing it out to the A1 model from Amazon.com, sending back the 1ATY model, and cancelling the cheques to Asus.

A1 model? That would mean no Momentus XT drives! :D Silly Seagate.

They still have Seagate drives, and, I may just swap the drive 1 when I get the A1 model. :D

If you do replace the screen have a center do it otherwise it voids the warranty...

bertio - I'm just switching drives.

Note: I'm having a b**** of a time getting GTA4 to play! I've tried the ATI drivers (v 8.683) from support.asus.com, I've tried 7.xxx and 7.xxxa from AMD's website ... and I get an error saying that the game can't start because of ATI.

    Yep.

But IMO 16:10 is better than 16:9. Why would anyone say no to an extra inch of viewable screen?

IF they had a 1680x1050 panel in the G73J series, I'd take it!!!

BTW can anyone point me via links to the best way to fix my video?
