Was gaming last night on my laptop and all of sudden it just shut off. Not shut down, more like power was cut to it as if someone unplugged a power cord to it. I was using it on power power at the time, no cord plugged into it. Thought maybe it was a dead battery, but I don't think so. The unit will not turn back on even with the power cord hooked up to it and there are no lights on at all, not even the charging light with the power cord plugged in. Do laptops have an internal power supply that could be the problem like desktop computers?

There is no internal power supply, It runs on battery or external power brick. In your case, try removing the power cord and & battery, hold the power on button 20 seconds, and try to power on with battery or AC.
Also on the JH there is a reset pin hole on the bottom, If your machine has one try this also. It sound like an MB issue to me though.
There is a CMOS battery on the MB.

Charger light is on the brick? Green or another colour?

Have to agree with Josea it should have just switched to the battery if the charger had died but a short or surge from the plug does indeed sound likely and the MB could be up the creak!

Check everything Reset everything including the CMOS and then consider an RMA.

At the time, I was running only off of the battery. I took the the unit back to the cord and plugged it in. The light on the brick was on and green, but nothing lit up on the front end of the computer. Normally there would be a orange light lit even with power off indicating the battery is charging, but I don't even have that. Everything is dead.

I'm wondering should the computer run hooked up through power cord without a battery in it? The battery was very warm. Is it possible I just need a new battery? Not sure about how to reset things.....I believe there is power at the end of the cord because the green light on the brick is on, but again the computer was not hooked to the cord when this happened and with the cord plugged in I still can't turn the unit on and there is nothing at all lit on the computer.

Note: I was off on the model as well. I have the exact model in JOSEA's tag.

The computer should run without any issues with the power cord plugged in and the battery in the system. The battery will run warmer this way as power is going to it to charge it. If it was running fine on the battery before and now it won't charge or power up while plugged in, it has something to do with the power source. It is likely the power adapter itself, or it could be an internal connection that has fried. Have you contacted the reseller or ASUS yet?

Is there much play in the adaptor pin? Brett could be right its a common fault with the G53 that the pin on the mobo comes loose and the right angled adaptor plugs are recommended to prevent it happening.

I contacted MicroCenter tech support, whom I purchased the unit from just because they've always been great. He told me (and I swore I did this last night), remove the battery and unplug the AC cord, plug the AC cord back in and try turning it on. Low and behold, it turned back on and everything 'seems' okay. At this point I'm just curious what happened. Something overheat? I bought this rig specifically for gaming and it does get pretty warm underneath. Is there something I should be concerned with going forward? I just don't think it's the AC cord because this occurred without it plugged in and no, there isn't really any play where it plugs in.

Bern Yes you can run with the battery out. I do this often. I am not sure why this happened, but since the original issue happened on battery (Right?) It could be a bad battery. I had one that died when it hit 25 % left. Use Gpu observer to check temps (I do not think it was a temp issue tough) http://www.geeks3d.com/20101122/gpu-tool-gpu-observer-3-7-sidebar-gadget/

will allow you to check temps also and look at stats on the battery and much other good information. If you need links let us know.

Correct was on battery only at the time. I wonder if somehow the battery just got disonnected somehow.....But yeah, if you have links to those tools, I'd appreciate it.
