I've read a few threads on this, but couldn't get any concrete proof as to weather the g73sw has the blue led light under the lcd or not. Some said maybe its disabled, broke, or not there. Well, I removed the lcd bezel to have a look see and there is no led bar under the screen.

One thing I have not looked at is to see if the ZIF socket is on the motherboard to attach a light bar. Ive got some ac5 laying around and plan to do a repaste, Ill update this thread once I see if the ZIF socket is there or not. My hunch is that it is there, because the folks at xotic pc can put one on. I'm assuming there just attaching it to the socket that's already in place on the mother board. As to whether or not the light bar is there or not, it is not. Case solved, I hope this helps out.

6/25/11 I took apart the laptop for a repaste and took some pics of unused sockets on the mother board. I found a total of three.

1st is a shot of the entire board. 2 sockets can be found under the keyboard and palmrest area. To see them I needed to remove the upper case which allowed me to see the whole board. 1 unused socket was in the upper left corner of the board and a second was found on the bottom right of the board.

Pic of the upper left socket. I believe this is where the led ligh would plug into.
    upperleft.jpg

Pic of the lower right socket. Its a mystery to me.
    lowerright.jpg

I also found this unused socket under the memory cover next to the hard drives. I have no idea what this one would be for either. This one can be easily seen by removing the memory cover and its in an area between the hard drives and memory.

What is all the fuss about a crappy dim blue light which you cannot even see with the screen open and the only warrant for it is for it to flash to tell you when you have closed the screen it has gone into hibernation because you forgot to turn it off and your downloads are no longer happening.

I care more for the 5870M which chews up the 460M than a blue bar :p

If you want lights you should have got the G70S which I used to have! mwahahahahahaha!

So that's where Alienware's unwanted child went.

Was an awesome model build like a tank cased in alluminium everything was rock solid had a ton of lighting and so many features like the coolest OLED dash screen.

But Asus being Asus did what they did best put in a decent CPU X9000 extreme with 2 8700M GT's LOL

I don't think its so much that sw users want the light, but the fact that there is a blue translucent strip of plastic under the lcd. Its kind of confusing, is it there or isn't it? Well if they took it out why not take out the blue plastic on the bottom too. Also I'm a former owner of a g50v, I know about the lights lol and there hideous!

I don't understand ASUS's thinking sometimes, I'm still waiting for a G74 with a 6970M. Personally I hate tons of LED's, it's just ugly and tacky in my opinion. Seems like they're trying to too hard to be cool when they put a trillion lights in it, that's why I like the G73 so much and hate a lot of other gaming laptops. When I'm hankering to be blinded by pretty lights, I think I'll roll over to the Alienware camp. Think I'll buy an M11x and use it to decorate a Christmas tree.

Yea, thats what was most appealing to me about the g73, no flashy lights. I find that when I have a laptop with alot of lights flashing on and off I typically disable them.

But there is tasteful flashyness and I dont see why Asus couldn't put a bit of thought into their laptop like Alienware, yes we dont need landing lights on the front and rear but a tidy little software program that lets you set up the keyboard colours just as you like would be nice.

Still funny the G70s had all those lights but didnt have a keyboard backlight :D haha

With that many lights there's no need for a keyboard light :D

I wouldn't mind a keyboard light color changer, but beyond that? Nay. I don't like flashyness of any kind with a laptop, it's just lame. One thing that I've always thought Apple get 100% right is their laptop designs. It's very simple, it's sleek, elegant, it's not crying out for attention, it's...a laptop, how a laptop should be. Yet Mac's still get attention but for all the right reasons. I like that the G73 is subtle, the design while different is not overdoing it, it's good.

Lol what's funny is that my uncle is an xbox gamer but bought a m17x.

The m17x just lights up his living room in a cool way, like a christmas tree

I like the lights personally but can understand if you where using it outside of your home its a no go because it labels you.

Personal private awesomeness is acceptable :D My G70S was 5.5kg so it didnt go nowhere haha

Uhm, mine DOES have a transparent blue strip on the bottom of the monitor. It doesn't light up and I don't know if any LEDs are in there. I had my monitor completely off and you can see it along the bottom. You can't really see it without taking the monitor off because it doesn't fold back that far.

Yea, there's a translucent blue strip on the bottom of the lcd. This is where the light from the led bar leaks through. All the g73s have the blue strip, but the sw line lacks the led bar inside that actually provides the light.

Nice job on the pics, and finally showing that there is simply no leds under the lid even if the blue film strip is still there.

The upper left should be the right for such a led bar.

IMHO the bottom right socket is for Bluetooth module?
ATM I don't know where the cable ends at the JH. But there is definately something connected.

IIRC you can see the position of the LED bar socket in BTOtechs's G73 disassembly video.
