The blacks are as bright as any other laptop, shouldn't the LEDs completely turn off when the screen is black?

I am not sure but I think the SW, JW, and JH have a similar screen. Mine has always been a bit washed out or overly bright or something like that. I don't know how to describe it. The blacks aren't very black. When I am connected to my beautiful 27 inch monitor at work, the desktop background displayed on the monitor always looks much deeper and richer than the identical picture on the laptop sitting beside it. It's a good display but not a great display. In brightly colored things it is good. In things that have a lot of darker or deeper colors it doesn't do a great job. There is a thread with some custom monitor profiles. You might try some of those and see if you are more happy.

I tried the custom ones but I couldn't get them to work. I think Power4Gear was overriding them or something. It wasn't really bothering me so I gave up on trying to get them installed pretty quickly. It seems like it's bugging you so I bet you could get the custom ICD files going on your machine with a bit more determination. Try searching for terms like ICD or 7500K. I remember those being mentioned a lot in the thread.

it could also be wich model you have. My G73sw-ax1 has a great screen. It is not as good as the top end mate screens, but better then my friends mac book pro or even better then my HP LED monitor. Was 2 or 3 different screens used depending on when you bought and as well as the BB models.

I've seen this same thing from a lot of folks here. There was a thread in 2010 where they were trying to figure out from markings on the label on the outside of the box which screen the laptop had. One of them is apparently superior. My HP LED monitor looks much better than my G73 1080P screen. I guess I was unlucky.
