Got this new notebook and it seems pretty slick. Everything was running great. Loaded up Fallout 3 New Vegas and played for a few hours. In the middle of playing the fans kicked into high mode, which I expected from loading up the CPU and GPU. Played like this for awhile and then it crashed out to the desktop. No big deal, restarted and played some more. Stopped playing and the fans have never turned back off. They are stuck on max. Theres nothing in the BIOS regarding the fans but I defaulted it anyway. No change. Tried different power settings, no change. Battery in/out, plugged into wall/unplugged no change. Tried the various power settings, no change. Lastly I reformatted and reloaded from the backup disks and still no change. The fans are stuck on max.
Any ideas? This happen to anyone else?

Dust the vents?
-
Its brand new. Out of the box only a couple of days. No dust.
-
If its brand new and it has a technical fault already take it back and get it replaced!
-
I dont know if its a fault or not, thats why I'm asking. I've had notebooks by many other manufacturers. Sonys seem to have fans that stay on, Acers come on and off, Toshibas are on and off, IBM/Lenovo have fans but I can never even tell if they are working... I've gone through about 500 different laptops with the sales staff at work. This is the first Asus (or "gaming" notebook for that matter) I've owned.
I got it from Amazon so I don't want to deal with all the shipping hassle if I don't have to. If its actually broken of course I will, but I'm hoping heres just something I'm overlooking or a button I pressed or something... -
Hrm, well fans should be on, but not full blast at idle. That is weird you've done all that and it still won't go down. Do you have much plugged into the USB ports, I have an 2.5 hdd external and if I leave it in it sometimes boots full blast fans, but does go down after a while.
If you do have to send it back, Amazon is super great about returns, so at least you're lucky there. Though I certainly know the hassle it is to return and wait for a replacement(returned/shipped back over 10 bad laptops last year.) -
try updating the bios for the hell of it then if youve tried everything else, or just reflashing your current one.
what are your temps when the fans are at full blast? -
It could be anything to be honest a short, as mentioned above the BIOS, have you checked the temps? The heatsink might not be connected correctly and firing the CPU/GPU temp straight to max and causing it.
Flashing is risky when its under warranty and brand new if you have done all of what you said and its still like it then it does sound like a hardware problem and at that price your gonna have to return it. -
Flashing is not risky, especially under warranty. Bad bios flashes are covered under warranty.
-
Flashing is not risky if done correctly no and with a G series its normally a requirement.
However, OP said he got it from Amazon so do will they replace it with a bad flash? and also that he didnt want to mess about waiting for a replacement and if there is one place on earth that you do not want to send your laptop if you want it fixed quickly its to Asus RMA department. -
Amazon is pretty good for returns as long as you are inside the 30days, go to amazon web and try to contact a representative using their chat, they will send you a replacement 1 day shipping, you still have until your 30days end to return the defective, i would just wait for the new one to arrive and use the packing materials of the new one to ship the old one, and no much issues there, just place the sticker amazon is going to email you, go to USPS and ship it, should be around $20 or so, amazon might even refund the shipping once they get it back.
-
Amazon will take it back no probs, even if the flash goes wrong, its better just to say "hey, my laptop isnt working, its giving me random errors... blah blah." Sure enough, they'll give him a shipping label and send a replacement once they get his back.
For the most part, flashing the mobo bios is pretty safe and rather easy since Asus has a built in flasher within the bios itself.
Edit: What said above sounds even better, I've heard they will send a replacement with one day shipping before, but wasnt sure. That would be even better deal if so. -
Thanks for the input guys. I have no problems loading up firmware or even tearing the guts out of these things. I'm no stranger to screwdrivers and soldering irons.
So I formatted and loaded my own copy on Win 7 and loaded up drivers. No change. I tried all three available versions of the BIOS, 202, 203, and 205. No change. The idle temps don't look bad, here they are:
GPU 31C
HD0 36C
Temp1 36C
Core0 33C
Core1 29C
Core2 32C
Core3 39C
I'm thinking hardware. Weird that they stay on though... I've seen laptops have fans that don't come on but never any that stay on full. -
Reset BIOS to default settings, since the fans are BIOS controlled. If that doesn't work, then unplug the unit from AC, and remove the battery. Let the unit sit for a spell, and then try again.
-
I have reset to factory defaults about 20 times but I haven't removed power entirely, I've always had either the battery or adapter plugged in. I will give that a shot. Thanks!
Anyone know if the cmos battery is easy to get to? -
no it's not
-
I am Jealus.....
I would try you systems... -
Nailed it!! THANK YOU!! Unplugged it from the wall and removed the battery for a couple hours. Came back and tried again and the fans were back to normal! I was ready to tear this thing apart and dig around on the inside for a solution!
THANKS!
G73SW fans won't turn off
