Hi I just got my new G73SW. Had it for two days now and I got this pop up that the display drivers stopped responding. I formatted the laptop with a clean installation and tried different drivers but the problem still occured.

This problem doesn't occur so often so I thought it would be okay but when I play Starcraft 2 the laptop would freeze and the audio worked for a few seconds and also froze. It happens when I search for an opponent and the game finds one or during the first seconds in the game.

It didn't happen too often before but it happened twice in a row now. Is some hardware in my laptop defective? It seems hard to RMA it because it happens so randomly. I've played for 6-9 hours without any freezes and then it happens.

Any advice would be helpful. I'm also thinking of doing another format and only installing the neccessary drivers to play sc2. What are those drivers? chipset, sound and graphics?

    Thanks

    1) If you are overclocking, then run at stock speeds.

    2) Only use Notebook drivers.

See link below in sig for Driver links.

I've only had the laptop for 3-4 days and have not overclocked. Even with stock drivers it freezes. I tried to do a restore to factory OS with all the bloatware and it still froze. Right now im running clean OS with only the graphics driver installed and it doesn't really freeze.

The display driver stops to respond and gets restored resulting that the furmark application running crashes. After the crash I can run furmark stress test again without a crash. But if I reboot or more specific shut down the pc and let it rest for a bit and then try it again it will crash. It feels like it crashes when the gpu is idle and then is working.

Or might be a defective hardware.

Do the Intel INF update (9.2.0.1030) available on my Driver page. If it still freezes, reboot, hit F2, and enter the BIOS. Go to the last tab, and find the option to Restore To Defaults. You may have some bad CMOS data that is causing some instability.

    Hi again

I tried with the chipset drivers on your thread and it still froze. Or well it didn't froze but it's probably because i'm using the latest nvidia drivers for notebooks. It froze when I used the graphics driver from the CD but if I use the latest a pop up appears "The NVIDIA OpenGL driver lost connection with the display driver and is unable to continue. The application must close."

Furmark shows a black screen and then crashes. The display driver is then restored and furmark seems to work after it. Until I reboot.

I also tried to reset the BIOS settings and it didn't help. I guess I should contact the retailer to set up an RMA.

Reinstall with 270.61, and use the Custom install with "Do Clean Install" option checked.

I tried that yesterday and it didn't work. I installed win7 home premium clean. Without any graphics driver and then installed a driver just like you said. The win7 home prem was downloaded and burnt to a cd and then I used the key located on the back of the laptop.

As of now I just restored the laptop to factory OS with all the bloatware and of course it still freezes. I had the same laptop 1 month ago with 6 GB ram instead of 8 and it didn't have this issue. I returned it though to get this one.

It looks like there aren't anything else to try. I'll contact the retailer on monday for an RMA.

    Hi Zackarak

I'm having the exact same problem the my ASUS G73, I called tech support and they recommended sending it in to replace the GPU. I want that to be a last option though. Did you ever find a solution to the problem with your laptop?

    Thanks

    Hey,

I had to send it back and they changed the GPU.

Did that fix everything after that? Also did they have to reformat your PC with a new GPU install?

Yes, the laptop worked after replacing the GPU. I think I formatted the hard drives before sending it back and don't remember if they formatted but I don't think so.

In my experience, Asus usually doesn't format unless you ask them to or if they have to.
