    Anyone did this?

Would be a trial and error thing I suppose as the G74 card is built in.

Because it is just an overclocked 460M there is not really much point in spending money to change it be much easier to flash the Vbios with the settings for the 560M but again I have not seen a post about this being done yet.

You'll need either an Asus 560m, or a modded JH heatsink to try this. Would be interesting to see.

^^ditto, can't believe they did that, makes me glad I got the G73SW and that the G74SX isn't really much better anyways.

They probably got fed up of watching us try and fit other cards and get past their attempts to reverse engineer their GPU's :D

But building the GPU into the mobo kind of removes this possibility now haha!

Thanks a lot! Hahahaha, now this really sucks!! Lol.

So this means you'll need a JH heatsink (modified) for testing a regular 560m in a G73SW...

    I really can't believe this, a high-end mobile GPU

WTH why would they do this..??!!

*sniff* Asus if you do stuff like this i might have to stop loving you...

Edit: Although cant help but admire that they built a 560m onto the board and the board size/layout looks pretty good..

Jokes on Asus if the 560M turns out to be faulty. Especially with the understand poorly cooled VRAM.

''Sure just RMA and sent it in and we will just replace the....entire motherboard....err Mr Asus we have 3000 calls waiting sir.... :wideeyed:''

VRAM on mobile cards is almost impossible to kill by heat. I had half of the VRAM modules not cooled at all when I put the 470m in the M15x, and there were absolutely no issues.
It doesn't run as hot as most people think, really.

Don't forget the massive PCB will act as heatsink too.

As for being a highend chip, in terms of power consumption it's really not as far as I can tell. Not compared to the others. With the above motherboard they can pack in more stuff or make it thinner.

Yup...definitely alienware route from now on...Asus probably did this so customers "have to" keep buying new laptops they dish out...as opposed to say current alienware m17/18x owners who pay alienware once, and they upgrade via purchases elsewhere.

Now that the 6990m is basically confirmed, as soon as its an available option (6990m xfire :D) for the m18x im getting one.

graphics card dies -> replace entire mobo -> doesn't seem very cost effective, lol.

Well even with removable gpus (like 460m on 73sw and 560m on 53sx) you don't have much options.
You can't upgrade the cards due to a custom layout and the bios doesn't recognize them anyway.
Either way doesn't matter which kind of G series notebook you have, you can't do much.
There's a thread about a 6970m upgrade attempt in a 73jh but still Its not successful althought the card somewhat works.
That's the only thing I regret about my 53sw.
I love the laptop in every single bit but this limitation really disappoints me, as it's turning out the mobile gpus are getting old more fast than desktop counterparts that you can upgrade anytime.

My next laptop will be a clevo based system, that's for sure. In th past I had a few of them and I was happy to gain more lifetime out of it by replacing gpu and CPU easily.
My m860tu is still going strong with the x9100 and an fx3700m in it.

AFAIK G53sx does have a removable 560m, but it's only 128bit, so not worth it ;)

No one has tried. You'd also need the heatsink from jh.

I like the idea of the 5870M into a G73SW.

The performance might not worthy but it will be ( NBR modders 1 Asus 0 ) because at the moment they are sitting on a pile of money stroking Mr Bigglesworth laughing at us.

Flash a Sandy Bridge BIOS to a completely different Clarksfield mobo? Might as well flash it with the works of Shakespeare. :)
So basically that would expensive, risky, likely problematic and pointless. :)
