Possible to replace 460 with 560 or 660 from other G series?

560m - maybe from the G53sx, not sure though if the screw holes match.
660m - no way, the form factor is very different.

But one guy already confirmed that a 680m can successfully post in a G73sw. If he succeeds in assembling everything, that means regular MXM cards work in a G73sw. :)

G75, no upgrading possible. You'll have to go with the G73SW. 4GB is enough for gaming.

Just upgrade your P170 to the 680M and a MSI Steel Series instead.

I have managed to upgrade to gtx 680m 4Gb from msi. It is not straight job as none of vbioses make laptop posts on internal screen. And even on externa via vga cable there is 30 second delay as valid mxm structure vas not found and laptop freezed on Windows logon screen.

After we managed to modify vbios to load Windows then there were problems with clocking becouse of mxm structure not found I mentioned earlier power state was limited to P10 and core wouldnt og above 150mhz.

Now I managed everything to work properly and only thing that is remaining to improve heatsink from g73jh so it does cover vrms that get pretty hot.
When i got this done then I wil test performance and post here results.

I've got a Asus GTX 560M from a G53SX working perfectly in my G73SW. I hope to get to try a 660M from a G75. The shape of that card is much differant so it will take some serious mods.

Only problem I have now is that core is somehow limited to 150mhz max and with boost goes to 185mhz. Something with vbios is preventing core to clock normaly. But card is switching between Power states normaly.
Even With core on 185mhz it outperform 460m in 3dmark11.

You mean this via command line parameters? Like this command:
    nvidiaInspector.exe -setVoltageOffset:0,0,0 -setGpuClock:0,2,700 -setMemoryClock:0,2,1400 -forcepstate:0,0

Sounds like a similar thing to when I tried a 460M in my 7738G and I never could figure out how to get round it :/ It just refuses to acknowledge the full performance state and is some sort of weird bios compatibility issue as far as I can tell.

Hei. It still works perfect. I haved offer for 1800$ on it.
Cards you mention arent possible for upgrade as they are much bigger form factor and thus no place inside chasis. Plus bios compatibility problem. 680m outperforms 770m anyway. asus 780m is not out yet.

I have a G73SW-XT1. I would like to upgrade my GPU to a 600 class. I have a few questions. Is the GPU on a separate board or do you just swap out gpu's on the mobo? Did the 680 need better cooling or hardware from another model to hold GPU in place? Where did you buy your GPU from? I've heard of a company called MXM that was flashing the proper vbios to the card so it would work properly. Did you or can you publish a step by step tutorial on your GPU upgrade? Thanks!

Hi. Gpu is Board itself is so called MXM 3.0b form factor. But asus GPUs are tottaly different shapes. so only standard MXM form factor will fit inside plus you must switch gpu heatsink with that of older g73jh. And then there is video bios compatibility issue with system bios of asus.
You need to Upgrade charger to atleast 180 watt plus manage to cool vrms on 680m as they dont get covered by g73jh heatsink.

Yeah you have to be pretty handy with DIY tools to modify the heatsink, you can "borrow" the vrm plates from other heatsinks as this means you get the right shape and contact levels.

    Hi jmhdj.
Nice work you did. I've been following some other forums related to G73sw graphic card update. Is there any way I can get the vbios you used for the gtx680m? I'm willing to pay of course for the hard work.
    Thanks

I'm trying to get a gtx680m card. These are the specifications needed for vbios mod.

CPCXD N13E-GTX-A2 Nvidia GeForce GTX 680m 2GB DDR5 MXM 3.0 VGA Video Card for Laptop
    Is for Dell laptops
    GPU: N13E-GTX-A2
    p/n is CPCXD
    Vram manufactured by Hynix

Once I get the moded vbios I'll order the card.
Since I only have free time on weekends, I'll try to give updates here every weekend once the elements are in my table.
Hopefully this Asus g73sw will give fight other 4 years.

What kind heatsink you use? I would think you would suffer even more from temperature throttling as 780m pulls more power then 680m.

    i used this one:
Clevo P170HM VGA Board Heatsink 60 DAY WARRANTY | eBay
just remove the heat pipe and fit it around the g73jh heatsink temps can get up around high 80s under intence use. u could also use thermal glue to add a extra heat pipe ... or order a g751 heatsink for the 980m as it looks like a good fit.

yes solder is better but i thought if some1 is reading this & trys it but cant solder fast it will destroy the heat pipes & thay will overheat, expand & pop veryfast (i have done this to a brand new heat-sink before). so for anyone thinking of trying this if you cant solder fast just use thermal glue.

    Hi jmhdj.

I'm decided to go for the gtx680m. I'm interesting in getting the vbios mod of that card for asus g73sw.
    You already got my email.

These are the specs of the card:

CPCXD N13E-GTX-A2 Nvidia GeForce GTX 680m 2GB DDR5 MXM 3.0 VGA Video Card for Laptop
    Is for Dell laptop
    GPU: N13E-GTX-A2
    p/n is CPCXD
    2048MB Vram manufactured by Hynix.
    vbios version: 80.04.33.00.32

I hope I can get my hands dirty with this upgrade.

Hi guys i will try to upgrade my G73sw with a 780m but will the clevo Card fit?! The Asus GPU is not like mxm3.0b?
If that works i can buy a cheap 780m Card from a friend that has a clevo P170EM.
Now for the heatsink witch one i use?! The G73jh heatsink? P170hm heatsink or the G751 heatsink?

    Regards from Portugal.

    few question please:

    1. Could you please give details what exact modifications have you done to cooling system? So, u used heat pipe from Clevo P170HM Heatsink and fit it around the heatsink from G73JH? Any other option like using other heatsinks?

    2. Any idea if the asus version GTX780M from Asus G750jh can fit G73SW? I can buy the one, I hope it will not be necessary to flash the vbios with another one in this case, but I am not sure about the form factor.

    3. If you succed with Clevo GTX780, may be other VGAs like 870m, 970m & 980m for Clevo/MSI/Dell can be installed?
    What about these upgrade kits?
    Clevo P1XSMA P37XSMA VGA Upgrade Kit NVIDIA GTX 970M 6GB DDR5 MXM 3 0B 75W | eBay
    Clevo P15XSM P17XSM VGA Upgrade Kit NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 6GB DDR5 MXM 3 0B | eBay
    Clevo P1XSMA P37XSMA VGA Upgrade Kit NVIDIA GTX 980M 8GB DDR5 MXM 3 0B 103W | eBay

If they are all MXM 3.0b (is the original 460m also mxm 3.0b?) and same form factor, so any of these can fit? And these kits already include cooling - can these heatsinks be used in G73SW? I understand they might require modification as well.

    4. How to/ where can i get Asus vbios version for Clevo/Dell cards in case I buy Clevo/Dell vga?

Guys, I will highly appreciate if you find the time to answer!!
I wish to give my G73SW second life. I am also looking for the processor upgrade options instead 2630qm...
