Hi all, new here and hoping someone can save me from an RMA. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
I just bought this on a recent Newegg sale, best bang for the buck I've seen yet. But....random no boot/slow boot/crash when it does boot/desktop/gaming etc doesn't matter - you get the idea.
What I've tried -
-All latest drivers from Asus site, as well as Intel and Nvidia.
-Fresh install Win 7 Ult.
-Fresh install on a brand new Hdd.
-Memtest shows 0 errors
-Intel chipset issue - mine shows Rev_05, I think that's the fixed Rev?
-Happens on battery or AC
-temps (core temp and afterburner) cpu idling around 40c, gfx load 67c (Metro 2033) - I haven't gotten the cpu load temp yet.
I've emailed Asus tech support but haven't heard yet, Newegg is offering an in-store credit and they pay shipping.
One question, I've had memtest show desktop ram clean only to find the ram was indeed the issue. Is it worth it to start pulling sticks?
I don't want to void any warranty I have, but don't want to go through the shipping/replace etc process unless I have to.
Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to cover everything up front.![]()
Cheers and thanks![]()

Also, you mentioned desktop ram, hopefully you meant notebook lol.
If it's not POSTing, then it's likely to be a RAM issue at which point its a good idea to start trying them stick by stick. Just make sure you use the DIMM labelled 1. -
Thanks for the reply smellon - yeah, it's acting up pretty badly
I only mentioned the desktop as an example that memtest wouldn't always show bad ram - I did pull the 2 sticks in the bottom slots last night. Within 10 minutes I had a no POST, a hang during POST and when it did boot the video driver repeatedly crashed with the "Display driver stopped responding" message.
It would recover long enough for me to see the message, then crash again. This was all on desktop, no games, no antivirus running etc.
I'm debating whether I'm brave enough to pop the keyboard to pull the other sticks today.I don't know my way around laptops that well...

Yep, it's on it's way back to Newegg - I got a fantastic rep on the phone who was able to get me a refund in the form of a store credit. Props to her as I was nervous about replacing it with another refurb.
I think it's time to suck it up and pay the extra $$ for a new G74sx....this wasn't a good experience for a first time refurb buyer -
ya stay away from the best buy model as it has has the gimped gpu that other will have the full version of the gpu.
