Hi guys I'd like to upgrade my G73SW-XN2 to 16 gigs of RAM.

The laptop has 4 Dimms. The manual says that the 2 dimms under the keyboard should be populated with RAM, however its quite different. I have one dimm occupied under the keyboard and one under the access panel.

This leaves 2 dimms open. One under the access panel and one under the keyboard. If there an easier way to access the one under keyboard w/o taking the screen off as shown in the how to video?

Can I just install one 4 Gig card into the dimm slot that is under the access panel for a total of 12 gigs, or do I need to pair the memory upgrade using all 4 slots.....

    Help!

I've taken the keyboard out but not sure I want to undertake anything more complicated.

    Thanks!

You can just wack in 3 and have 12GB of RAM you dont need all 4 to be populated because the JH BB version has 4 slots and only had 3 of them filled. Just to be sure you require this amount before spending out on them as I struggle to hit 6GB when im running an obscene amount of software all at once, unless you intend to EDIT,3D or CAD you dont need more than 8GB tbh.

You will need to dissassemble to access the 4th slot under the keyboard dont risk trying to do it without removing the screen as you may damage something.

I plan on using the 1080 video function on my Canon 7D and editing RAW photos.

Using CS4 to edit RAW with Windows Vista and 4 Gigs of RAM was painful......

For photo and video editing do you guys feel that 8 Gigs is enough? I plan on upgrading to CS5 Suite at some point.

So if I want to add another 4 Gigs of RAM to the laptop I have to use the slot under the keyboard vs the one under the access panel?

You'd have to do a partial disassemble... basically follow the BTOTech vid to the point where you take off the keyboard and unscrew the top. If you are careful enough, you can just remove teh audio connection, and then pivot the top with just the trackpad and the other ribbon cable on it. (This is what I did when I installed the 16GB on the SW)

I'll have to give that a try. How tough was it to get the top off?

I guess for this, some video editing / batch work shows massive improvement in number-crunch times with more RAM, even (Sometimes especially) up to 16GB or more.

    Hi Chastity,

The guy in the BTOTech video has a beautiful screwdriver, which works on all the screws on G73 and seems to have magnetic to hold the screws too.

Where can one get hold of such an screwdriver?

    Many thanks,

    KOR!

@King of Rapture you can find magnetized screwdrivers at any hardware store. Alternatively you can put a magnet to any screwdriver and magnetize it.

Do not use these for internal components, only for the external chassis screws, so that you don't damage electronic components.

    Hi ALLurGroceries,

I am in Oman. The wife will be visiting Arkansas in couple of weeks to visit her folks. Is there an online store so that I can ship it to her?

Or a trip to Walmart, Radio Shack, Home Depot ..... ?

    Best regards,

    KOR!

    Many thanks ALLurGroceries,

The one in the BTOTech video looked top heavy and an excellent screwdriver for just laptops only. Maybe, a little bit pricey but looked worth the price.

    Kind regards,

    KOR!

I left the 2x2gb sticks under the keyboard alone and put a 8 gb kit in the bottom slots for a total of 12 gb.

    Update:

I had a chance to run Premiere Pro 4 yesterday on my machine this weekend. A 30 second 1080P video with the addition of an extra MP3 track eat up about 70 percent of my RAM during encoding. Program is a bit of a memory hog. Looks like an additional 8 Gigs of RAM is on order! Thanks for all tips folks!

Gents, my system is incomming. I have bought the 4, 4gig sticks and I am looking for this video or guide you are speaking of so i can remove the keyboard. Video is nice, but prefer a guide or PDF if someone has. Any suggestions?
