Hi all,
I bought my Asus G73SW-XT1 laptop from CompUSA store on Saturday and I absolutely love it.
I know G73 series are well known for their quite/non noisy performance. But, may be I am observing too much, I am able to hear the fan noise even while doing relatively easy task like browsing. Is this normal?? The moment I turn on the laptop, I am able to listen the same sound. Is that the Hard Disk not the cooling fan?
I have 500GB @ 7200 RPM hard disk.
Is there any way I can know, whether my laptop is making noise in the normal limits of this Series??
Are there any s/w that can tell my fan and hard disk noise levels?
If this is a fault with the laptop, I can return it before 15days.
Please advice.
Thanks,
Bore

It's not perfectly silent. It's silent in comparison to other gaming laptops... but may still be louder than a netbook that runs on passive cooling.

The hard-drives are more audible during browsing. That being said, the fans aren't completely silent in the sense of "nothing". It is silent compared to every other gaming laptop.

@tijo
Where can i find the battery fans RPM in HWinfo32 ??
For me under Asus G73EC, the values are
CPU Current:2192(RPM) Min:2186 Max:2202
GPU Curr:2192 Min:2190 Max:2202 -
Fan rpm under battery should be the same as on AC.
With SSD and Idle-Clocks of 70/100, my JH is totally silent for about 1 minute. With the Zalman notebook cooler it can be 5 minutes!
The HDDs (2xXTs) were incredibly loud.
Btw.: My GPU startup rpm is around 2600. This is really loud compared to the CPU idle rpm of ~2100rpm.
It would be better to let the GPU fan run with low speed all the time (maybe 1000rpm). -
@tilla
So you think, my laptop RPM levels are in expected range? I am not using any SSD.
How can I make my GPU fan to run at 1000rpm levels? Please advice a good software which wont harm the laptop any way.
Thanks -
So far, i don't think there's a software way to control the fanspeed on the G73JH otherwise i think we'd be seeing people try to upgrade the GPU. I'd bet Hellcry would slap a MSI 5870 in his if it was possible...

Thanks for the reply tijo.
If not software way, what other ways do we have to control a laptop fan. You said HWinfo32 mentioned your fan speed as 0, so you think my values
CPU Current:2192(RPM) Min:2186 Max:2202
GPU Curr:2192 Min:2190 Max:2202
are not normal?
Thanks -
Here are my fan speeds using opera is my clock go up and down 700MHz to 400MHz (i'll post a screenshot if you want). Currently plugged in. I got my JH to ridiculously low fan speeds on battery by using chastity's OD2 vBios for the 5870.
GPU cur:2854 min:2612 max:2858
CPU cur:2196 min:1981 max:2609
Currently in the office with headphones (ipod earbuds) and sound at 12%. I can't hear the fans.
Oh and that's on a G73JH and that HD5870 is running hotter than the GTX460m. Idles at 52-53 on word, 56-58 in opera (GPU clocks all over the place again).
EDIT: Pretty normal fan speeds if you ask me. Even at 4400 RPM which is the max it's quieter that a lot of gaming laptops at load.
EDIT2: There's probably some error margin in the HWiNFO readings of the RPM. I round it up to the hundreds personally. If you want to stress everything to the max to check the fan readings GPU: furmark stability test, CPU prime95 torture test.
From what i saw, you should hit around 70-75 on CPU and ~85 on GPU if you're on stock thermal paste. -
@tijo sorry for the late reply..
Wow.. that was really a elaborate reply. Thanks for all the info.
So, the summary of all the answers was, G73SW is quite when compared to other gaming laptops, but it is just as normal as any other normal laptop. Correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks. -
Correct. It's probably quieter than most AMD normal laptops, and most HP normal laptops (HP and dell have terrible thermal design... they usually reuse the chassis from one generation to the next).
-
DCx hit it, i heard normal laptops that were louder than my G73. Oh and the idle temps i reported are a bit higher since the heating was set to 26 in my office. I just found that out when i started a furmark run before going to the lab. I came back and i was hitting ~88 on my GPU core. Went back to the lab and brought a thermometer to check ambient
.
If you want a real life comparison, i can hear my fridge more than i can hear my G73. Standing about 4 meters from the fridge that is. -
I played NFS Undercover for less than 1hr and my laptop started to make a lot of noise. Again, I dont know whether it is normal for this laptop to make so much noise. I checked HiNFO32, GPU fans are running at 3500-3700 RPM.
At least for me, it is really loud. Now, I am thinking whether to keep this laptop or pay the 15% ($225, which is a lot) restocking fee and return the laptop to CompUSA store.
Please advice what I should do?
Thanks. -
Fan speed are normal. You won't really find something more silent with that kind of hardware though. Either you live with it or return it and get something with less powerful hardware. Even then you may find laptops that make more noise when stressed.

@tijo
I personally havent used any gaming laptops before. Is this the best less noisy laptop we can get? I was using a Dell Studio 15 before, it was a ok laptop for gaming but it used to get very hot while gaming. I dont have that laptop with me now to compare the fan noise though.
Will using a laptop cooling pad helps in reducing the fan noise from laptop. If yes, what is the best pad we can get at affordable (<$40) price? -
I guess i have spent to many years in Aviation.. I have a 14TB Synology NAS , a G73 and Lenovo R61 all running in my room... the damn A/C unit in my room is the noisest thing in here.
I never here the laptops and i only hear the NAS when more than 5 of my 60 users hit the NAS for the latest movie or TV show..
If anyone every thought the G73 is a loud computer... you need to get out more often -
Actually I have to agree with the idea that the G73 is as silent as a normal laptop. In my case the G73SW-XT1 is more quieter than my HP DV6-3015tx in GPU intensive tasks. Mind you that the HP sports a tame I3 clocked at 2.22Ghz and a Radeon 5650M which are no where near the G73 specs. But run WoW on the HP and you can hear the fan scream while the G73 stays very quiet, this is true even though Wow settings are maxed out on the G73 while set to mid settings on the HP. However a point to note is that by using an proper cooling pad with fans placed in support of the main cooling system, the HP GPU temp does not go over 61C while the G73 can reach the mid 70 mark while gaming. Wish there was a way to turn up the G73 GPU fan, I would rather mind the noise than have to RMA the thing due to heat exhaustion.

mid-70C degree marks are no way at all heat stressing the GPU, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I have the exact laptop model, it has the "new revision", "certified design" sticker. And yes the laptop is quiet. When browsing you don't hear anything..
I've finished Fallout New Vegas on ultra high setting and it's quiet..
I'm playing The Witcher 2 with it for more than 40 hrs. already (last part of Chapter 2 now) and it's quiet..
The fact that you noticed something and commented on hearing the cooling fans, maybe, just maybe, there's an issue. You said you haven't even played intensively on it yet like 8 hrs. straight like The Witcher 2 (hardware demanding)..
If you're in doubt or not comfortable with it, exchange it and have peace of mind..
