Most likely. Have you ever sprayed air through the GPU exhaust?

Quite a few people are having this issue and haven't noticed because Crysis uses a good amount of gpu resource and pushes the temps up.

It does sound like an overheat download HWinfo32 here

This will show you the temps throw Crysis on for 4-5 mins and check to see if any of the GPU temps are over 100oC that will be why its shutting down.

If so you have clogged fans or need a repaste.

Yeah you are most likely overheating. Use hwinfo to monitor you temps. One thing about the g73 is it may not feel hot to the touch but you have to monitor your temps.

I had the same problem as you. It was all fixed with using a air can :)

thanks for the fast reply guys!

i will try the temp monitor and see.
do you know att what temp over 100 it shuts down?

    well...

    idle temp about 70oC
Crysis 5 min gamplay temp 105oC

so it seems i will be trying to use compressed air to blow out some dust ;)

but in which end should i do it?
    the intake?
    or
    the exhaust?

how high pressure should i use on the air? i dont want to damage any thing :)

    thanks fo all replys!!

Just use short sharp bursts of air to not damage the motors of the fans and blow it into the exhausts.

That is far to hot 114oC is thermal meltdown so 105oC is probably when the GPU is nearing shutdown.

If canned air does not work you need a thermal repaste.

Have you updated to the latest BIOS/VBIOS?

IIRC, the 5870m turns off at 111. 105 is fine, really for furmark. Not so much for regular gaming. It all depends on where you live, really. In the mountains of india, where the air is thin and ambient temp is 35? Then 105 is probably not bad.

He said 105oC while playing Crysis buddy. Furmark would probably cook him an egg and chips on it!

after playing crysis 2 i saw my gpu temp went to 88c sometimes it fluctuated up to 92c! waaahhh!!!! while playing dragon age 2 my gpu temp is around 74-88c.

I didn't use any air cans or repasting yet. I can't find any air cans in some malls here....need to go to hardware stores.

    @bedrage:

-normally your temp will be high (crysis 2) but for me I say playing more than 97c is a little bit high but still normal. many users repasted and had a huge cooling results.

-add something to elevate your laptop, even though g73 doesn't suck air below you will see the result giving you less 4-7c temp. play inside an air-conditioned room (...Lol), put a laptop cooler it works... and finally repasting. I haven't repasting yet, no one knows how here. maybe after few years if I really need it. but for now not yet. my idle is 62-64 no repasting but contented.

-update your vbios and bios, it's easy if you know what to do so better check some notes or ask someone to help you out and good luck. my friend updated my g73 without any problem he just reformatted the usb thumb drive and put the files in it. reboot the lappy and...I went out for few seconds then he restarted again and done! XD instant update (in short, quick). people not lucky enough bricked their g73 sometimes happens. you can search the forums for good guide updating bios.

    Hi everyone!
THanks so much for posting this here. I too own a G73J laptop and I wanted to buy Crysis 2. But now, I'm thinking I can't purchase it because I don't want to ruin my computer. Also, I don't understand enough about computers to make it run.

Guys, I'm really sorry to ask this question. But since you guys all own a ASUS G73J (17.3 inch monitor), may I please ask what carrying case you purchased for your laptop?
I need to get a carrying case and would really appreciate the help. Thanks.

I got a backpack with purchase. You can probably find someone who is willing to sell theirs. Also, no software will destroy your hardware, unless your hardware is installed improperly. So get crysis 2, and don't worry about it. If your computer shuts off while playing crysis 2, then send it in for service.

... and why would you spend so much money on a gaming laptop and then NOT game?
