No backlight options in the bios configuration. But yeah when you use the bios easy flash it uninstalls the previous bios before installing the new one.

Yep gave him rep yesterday also, good find as I don't read German forums :p

I did like a n00b use winflash to do it first go around and then used ezflash to roll back to 206 and also tried the:

Support provided me with another item to try but it did not work for me. If anyone having this issue wants to give it a shot, here you go:

"Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.

Please uninstall then reinstall ATKACPI driver and hotkey-related utilities then reset BIOS then press Fn+A for a try again.
    Sorry if any inconvenience.

Does anyone know if this update can fix any of the sound-related issues people have been finding?

I've been experiencing the problem where, apparently at random, a very loud crackling static-like sound will come out of my speakers and am hoping this might address it.

Yeah I would like to do that but it doesn't let me roll back...just keeps 206 loaded, which is not the bios that came with my laptop. Does anybody know any other way to reset the bios in one of these things?

Hmmm.......never flashed a Bios, but feeling very tempted!

I have read a thread in these forums on the process, and obviously would use Easy Flash.

One question: would I have to go into the Bios after the update and configure anything, or would my current configuration settings just carry over?

    Thanks.

have you change any settings in bios?
there is not much to play with anyway plus its good practice to load factory default after bios update and with g73 that will set it all up as it was out of the box so you should have nothing extra to worry about.

Agreed. Usually you need to set all to defaults before updating bios, but I doubt that you have changed something. So, go ahead.

    Yup......never changed anything in Bios.

I think I'll just back up my whole HDD to an external, and give it a shot.

I'm still on 204, and if the FN+Esc, and throttling issues are taken care of, then it would be worth it for me.

As long as I don't lose my keyboard lighting....

For those wondering about the flashing utility, just take a look at the built in easy flash utility in your BIOS. Asus has included this utility in most every motherboard I have owned, as well as the G73. You can place the new bios on a usb drive, but I even just left it in the downloads folder as you can browse to almost any drive connected to you computer.

Honestly, I don't know if there are any additional risks or benefits from putting the BIOS on an external drive. I think some people might just do it out of habit.

Strange thing going on here with mine. While I flashed sucessfully to 209 using both the windows based flash and the ezflash in the bios. I was able to role back to 206 and 204 using the ezflash bios utility. Still trying in vain to get my keyboard lights working again. It occured to me like with all Asus disks that there is a recovery bios located on them. So checking the driver disk I found a .bin file and checking it out under the windows tool its version is 203?? However you cannot role back using the windows tool once you are flashed to a higher bios version, so off to the bios flash tool ezflash. Now they all have to proper extentions and even changing that extention to a .rom the ezflash tool will no longer see it ( 203) or any of the other bios' including 209,206,204... I put them on both HDs and still the ezflash tool sees nothing. I have no idea why... 209, 206 and 204 are untouched and I used the same exact files to flash once before... I have no idea why now the Ezflash will not see anything. I think my book is now Fubar in regards to flashing, although it is working normal with 209 without the keyboard lights...

Marcus, when did you lose your keyboard lights? Was it while flashing to 209?

Also, what utility did you use for the flash?

    Thank you

I just figured I'd post my experiences:

My G73JH came from the factory with the 206 bios.

I flashed to this beta bios using the ezflas utility within the BIOS itself and my keyboard light is working.

The keyboard conflict in device manager is also gone. I'm off to try Borderlands to see if this also resolved the strange issue I'm having with some first person shooters (I thought it was just Borderlands, but UT3 is doing it too...then I thought it was just Unreal engined games, but CoD: World at War is also doing it...)

    Great to hear this.

I assume this was your first Bios update on the G73. Did you have to do anything in the Bios configuration after the update?

    Thanks.

I haven't touched anything in the bios since I got the laptop, until today when I flashed the BIOS in this thread. After I flashed it, I didn't touch any bios settings afterwards either.

I had a brand new A2 version less then 2 weeks old, flash from 206 stock to 209 via Winflash (cause I am a n00b and should have known better) and it broke the keyboard lights...

The difference between what gets shipped and the default, is the turbo option. After setting the defaults, turbo is set to normal. The G73 doesn't have a typical BIOS, as there are restricted settings. So, you don't have to set the defaults before and after updating the BIOS, there isn't much there to set back. If you're going to update the BIOS, don't use WinFlash, use Easy Flash from within the BIOS.

Like I said before, I'll wait until ASUS releases the BIOS. At that time ASUS will have likely fixed more issues. If I do update the BIOS, it will be once. I'm not impatient. :)

I learned awhile back from some older Asus motherboards to NEVER EVER use the WinFlash utility, as it will corrupt settings when if flashes, plus you want to do a full reset after flashing, which is something the WinFlash Utility cannot do.

Please, for all that is Holy and for kittens around the world, please, just use the BIOS flash utility.

(btw, used the BIOS Easy Flash to go from 206 to 209 Beta, and keyboard lights work.)

I was just thinking, for people who have lost their keyboard lighting... you may wish to do a full CMOS reset (aka, pull the battery and clear the CMOS, then reset BIOS to default) This may reset the keyboard flags to what they should be.

    Its rebotting.........

    Its starting up.........................

    YESSSSSS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    Its alive.............I'm on the desktop.........................................

Gonna give it a couple minutes to finish booting.......................................

    This is incredible

    I just flashed the Bios!!!!!

I did it. Everything is up and running.

Keyboard lights - Bright and Clear!!

    Fn+Esc = No freezing

And I'm sure, as has already been reported, throttling issues solved.

    Guys, please forgive the euphoria.

This is the first time I have flashed a Bios. And I do know "a little" about computers. But flashing a Bios was always somewhat off limits for me.

Thanks to everyone on these forums, and a few people in particular, I have learned so much since I got my Asus G73.

Oh boy........next I'm going to try and install the neutron phase blaster.........or maybe I should put in the proton rectifier first.

    Again....thanks everyone!!!

    OK...quick question.

In the BIOS - Advanced - Asus Easy Over-Clock, should the setting be "Normal" or "Turbo"? After the update, its set to "Normal". Should I change it to "Turbo"?

    Thanks

BumbleBoner - I will do that no problem.

There is a hole to depress a button on the back right at the cmos battery location which I believe is to short the jumper for cmos battery, essentially the same as removing the battery. And BTW it did not fix my keyboard lights...

OK just a warning, DO NOT use the .bin bios file on the driver recovery CD. I just bricked my book, it is dead will not boot... So now off to Asus RMA...

Oh well back to the desktop for now... :(

I just cannot help testing, serious case of OCD... damn keyboard lights.. If they only would have worked after 209 I would have been fine!!!!! :D

ok, so just to verify, you were running bios 204 with working keyboard lights and you upgraded to bios 209, skipping 205-206, and have kept your keyboard backlights successfully? my -x2 is still running bios 204 from the factory and my keyboard backlights work great, but i have the keyboard irq conflict.

Touchfreeze is an aftermarket app that does not come with the G73JH. It disables the touchpad while you're typing (and apparently the mouse as well.)

Sweet, been gone for a week, and come back and see there's a new BIOS that actually fixes issues! I'll have to give it a try here tonight.

Oh wait, tonight's my anniversary. Think the wife will consider it romantic if we dine by the light of the BIOS instead of by candles? :p

Lol!! I remember reading about the CPU throttling issue before...but was thinking my G73 was immune to it. :p Today was the first time..just now...my G73 battery dropped to like 20%. I plugged in...the laptop almost came to a stall....everything was sooo slow. Tried hibernate...it just froze at a black screen. Had to do a hard reboot and everything is good. BTW...just checked Hwinfo32...I am running off a 205 bios. Kinda worried about doing a flash..can't afford to brick the laptop...in the middle of a lot of busy things in school. Do u guys think If I don't have major issues....wait for official version?
