I've gained some confidence after opening up my laptop several times and replacing things. So now I'm thinking perhaps I can upgrade the GPU from the 5870m

I've read a couple posts of people doing this but each involving different processes. For example, I saw one topic just replacing it and another talking about modding the vbios or something.

What I want to do is replace my 5870m with something better that isn't too expensive and without making things too complicated. If I can just replace it (without modding or doing extra stuff), that'd be great.

Any suggestions or topics (I know I missed some)? Also, to give you an idea, the game Blade and soul is coming to NA in January. I would like to at least do raids at 720p with 30fps. When a lot of people are around, I have to put it all on low and the fps is still not good. Ofc, if I'm just grinding on my own with hardly no one around, I can play at max and get 42fps in the dessert area for example.

To be frank, the machine is not mod friendly, you will need to cut metal to get any card to fit as the size is not standard.

and the higher end cards need to certain brand and revision with vBios mods. I knew better to buy an Asus and I did anyways.

Depends what you want to upgrade but they have never really supported any kind of CPU/GPU upgrade in this line.

Most manufactors don't support GPU upgrades, if that really is what you want.

Being a board makes repairs cheaper and within cards from the the same model you can upgrade with a little effort. That's why they do use a type (if non standard) of card.

I'm thinking about upgrading my Asus G53SW to a 770m (from the 460M)

I think I have the heatsink figured out, would I need to flash a vBios to the alienware version of the GTX 770m? I'm assuming I do but any advice is appreciated.

    Hi.
No you need to get asus 770m vbios from g750jx model and flash it on your 770m. If you are lucky and video ram is same type as asus one that would be enough.

I checked out that thread and I'm pretty much ready to order the card and get this under way. I have the heatsink and card figured out and I found a thread showing a modification of my casing which looks simple enough. When the card comes in I'll update the thread, I might need help with the vBios to make sure I don't brick anything. Thanks jmhdj!

Edit: 770m GTX Dell Card is ordered along with a g73 heatsink. Expected delivery is next week closer to Friday. I also decided to pickup a more powerful 180w power supply while I was at it.

Mxm card is in, it says proper mxm card not found and it halts post for 30 seconds. I assume I'm supposed to flash the vbios now?

Good news so far, I flashed the vbios for an asus 770m and the card booted to windows and seems to work. I had to do a few edits to nvidias drivers to include the card in the inf files to get the drivers to install. Everything seems to work so far, i still have a few mods to do to the heat sink to make sure it sits flush with the card and gives better temps. So far though it looks like the G53SW is able to be upgraded from the 460m to a 770m.

Thanks, looks like the temperature tops out around 78 degrees Celsius when running valley benchmark.

Where did you get the 180W power supply and what brand is it? More importantly - does it last?

I keep blowing through asus oem supplies from ebay

Anyone find an aftermarket power supply that holds up for these laptops?
