Hi, so i just repasted my GPU yesterday (after doing it it doesn't scare me to reopen my G73 anymoe) and i was wondering about the socket used for the 5870 in the JH. Is it a standard MXM3.0 or a reversed one like in previous asus laptops. I ask because, if it's standard and the heatsinks are the same type (i looked on the forum but couldn't find any definitive info), i'd be willing to try replacing my 5870 with a 6970 and get a new power supply if needed. The only things left to wonder about are where to get a 6970 in Canada and will it get too hot for a G73?

I know it'll be expensive to get a 6970 but i'm willing to try it or maybe a GTX470 if that's possible.

Hmm, i was also looking at the 6950, might be an option if there are no size/bios issues.

For answering the question whether a different card would physically fit I would need to see some pictures. I hope @tilla will soon start a thread and post his GPU pictures as he mentioned recently.

However, even if the layout of the screws would be MXM standard it's not guaranteed that a different card will work... there are other limiting factors. Maybe Asus used the same connector as MXM cards, but this doesn't mean that the pins are electronically identical with the MXM-standard. The BIOS could also be an issue.

And about the PSU... just getting a higher rated PSU doesn't necessarily mean your mobo can use more power. This is usually also limited by the BIOS and by hardware.

And as a side note... as a lot of G73JHs tend to run rather hot I don't think a 6970m would be a good solution anyway.

Edit: Ok, after quickly reading @tillas thread and seeing the pictures the card should fit. However, the 6970m is a bit longer than the clevo 5870...

No, not at all, my thread is all about the G73JW... as far as I know the GPU layout of the JW is different than the one used in the JH... @tilla hopefully posts some nice pictures.

    Edit: here's the thread of @tilla: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/567898-g73jh-running-msi-5870m.html

Yeah i started this thread because someone in the other one mentioned that it would be better not to mix the JH with the JW...

Yeah, haha, well now there's a G73JH MXM clarification thread as well... posted at the same time as your thread, haha :D

After reading @tillas thread about the clevo 5870 and the G73JH I'd say your chances for success are a bit better... it fits physically (well, maybe the 6970m is a bit too long) and electronically.
