It does sound like the hard disk is indeed crapping out on ya. If it is not a Best Buy unit, you probably have the two years warranty though.

Good HDDs to replace the one you have: WD scorpio black 500 or 750GB
    Hitachi 7K750

Use the method in the link you posted, it'll work like a charm. Oh and if you can, stop using the computer aside from backing everything up yesterday if you get my meaning.

The G73 can fit any 2.5" HDD, including the fat ones and the scorpio black is standard size so it'll fit for sure, use the caddy that housed the dying drive. The WD black will be audible, but offers the best performance. The 7K750 is marginally slower but much more quiet.

I'll say this again just in case, back up all your data now if you haven't done so already. Once the drive dies for good, there is no getting that data back aside from employing a data recovery service and you're talking costs in the thousands of $.

BACK EVERYTHING UP IMMEDIATLY. If you manage to start the computer and access the files, do not turn it off till you backed up everything you need. That harddrive is ruined. I'm surprised it boots at all really.

The only thing the SSD will improve in games is loading times. Steam should go on the HDD, you could squeeze one or two games on the SSD, but depending on the size of your game library it might not be feasible to install all games on the SSD.

Having the OS and your office and productivity programs on the SSD will give a fresh snappy feel to your system. I absolutely love the fact that when i use my laptop for university work, i can load all my apps instantly after entering the desktop and start working right away. There is no more waiting for something when i want to use the laptop for work, not that there was much waiting before, but it still feels better. I had my mother bring over her T420 yesterday so i could get a few things up to date/installed and working for her and it felt like it took forever to get everything started after i booted up the computer. A SSD is not something you'll miss until you have one and it is taken away form you. If money is a concern, go for a reliable fast HDD.
