I posted this on the main troubleshooting forum, but this board has always been much more helpful with this computer.

I just upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 after checking compatibility on Sunday. It worked all day Sunday, but on Monday when I woke up the computer it moved for a minute and then froze completely. After powering off and turning it back on it did the same thing when I started it and tried to open firefox. After that I restarted the computer again and it didn't freeze. Today after waking the computer up again it froze again. This time powering off and on fixed it.

I am also realizing while typing this that the keyboard now seems sluggish in comparison to Windows 7.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on right now and how to fix it?

What does performance monitor say for CPU usage and temps, does everything look normal?

This just started happening to me. Watched a video then the screen locked up and a buzzing sound continued. Since then I can't boot back into the operating system.

I tried safe mode too but no luck

I had these issues for a while also but was able to find a fix. Sometimes I had to try booting 4-5 times to get Windows to load.

Step one, if you can't get Windows to load, hold the left Shift key when you boot your computer and navigate to the "Disable Driver Signature Check/Enforcement" during startup.

I'm betting that it's some video driver issue that is causing the boot trouble. This is what the problem was on my G73jh.

Here are my additional fix details for common Windows 10 issues with G73jh:

    1. FIX: Windows sometimes hangs when booting or resuming from hibernate.
Completely remove all AMD video drivers. Run the Catalyst Install Manager and "express uninstall all" if you are able.
You'll know if the drivers have been removed as your LCD will drop to a non-native resolution.
Download and install the AMD Windows 10 drivers from the AMD.com website. Filename is amd-catalyst-15.7.1-win10-64bit.exe.
ADDITIONAL STEP: Try disabling "Driver Signature Enforcement" during startup. An alternate method to disable driver signature enforcement:
Open an elevated command-prompt (run as Admin):
execute the command below, and reboot:
    bcdedit.exe -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS

    2. FIX: LCD brightness control not working:
    Go to Registry Editor (regedit.exe)
    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000
    Next, go find:
    MD_EnableBrightnesslf2
    KMD_EnableBrightnessInterface2
    Set both to 0.
    Reboot.
ADDITIONAL STEP: In Device Manager, disable your video adapter "Radeon HD 5000 series" and re-enable.
    Retest your LCD brightness settings.

    3. FIX: Asus on-screen display does not work.
    Uninstall the current ATK driver.
Download and install the latest ATK driver from Asus, filename: ATKPackage_Win10_64_VER100039.zip

    EDIT: 11/3/2015:
    4. FIX: DISABLE the LAN adapter (Atheros AR8131 Gigabit Ethernet Controller) to fix the freeze at boot-up issue with Windows 10. I have kept my LAN adapter disabled and I've not had a lockup in several weeks. If you really need to use the LAN, the workaround is the disable LAN before shutdown/hibernate/restart, and re-enable the LAN only when you need it. Don't forget to disable it again or you'll freeze at your next boot. Interestingly, wireless works great all the time.

    THANK YOU!

I thought all was lost and Windows10 was not possible on this machine. I still don't understand how it was working OK for a couple days, and then completely locked up.

    For the record:
I booted into low resolution safe mode, then uninstalled the AMD catalyst junk drivers as you suggested, then downloaded and installed the latest.

Let's hope it stays stable! :)

Windows 10 does automatically update the drivers, there is a chance it installed one with issues.

I thought it was fixed by replacing the realtek drivers, but it just started again. I will try reinstalling the catalyst drivers

It's only gotten worse since I updated ATK and AMD drivers. It now takes three times to restart my computer before it turns on.

To keep everyone on the same release, this enhances security and makes working on the code easier when everyone is on the same version number.

Yes it has down sides but it also has up sides.

Yes it is a G73JH. I couldn't stop it from freezing, but I was able to get the computer in safe mode with networking and i just rolled it back to Windows 7. There was definitely a driver issue, but I couldn't find and update the ones that were giving me a problem.

In the past (with Windows 8) the LAN driver is ****. I disabled LAN in Bios on mine, when I upgraded to Windows 8 (freezing problems there). Since then, no more problems. Have not yet installed Win10.

I had the same issue with both WIndows 8.1 and Windows 10.

Try disabling the ethernet adapter (Qualcomm Atheros AR8131) in Device Manager, I guarantee it will fix it. If you can't keep it running long enough to disable it, try booting into Safe Mode without Networking.

My only issue now is that occasionally I get a black screen when waking up from sleep, and 64bit Chrome eats up too much memory and causes the whole computer to crash. I think that giving myself a huge page file may have fixed the latter.

I have similar problems, and the freeze is totally random but happens near startup, sometimes as soon as you see the mouse on the screen, sometimes after 1 min. I found if i remove the battery and power plug beforehand it will boot fine, but you never know when it's gonna happen because sometimes i can reboot 5 times and it will not happen. Anyways if it is the lan, i found the latest drivers:
win81-l1c-2.1.0.21-whql.zip v2.1.0.21. You can download them from here: http://www.driverscloud.com/fr/services/GetInformationDriver/32171-224045_key . I also installed the latest ATK, and while i didn't had any problems before i'll test it out and see. Also about the screen brightness adjustment, it kinda worked, but gave me both the ATK animation and windows 10 one, and was kinda unresponsive..sometimes 1 step would result in no brightness change, and requires 2 steps, which does a lot of brightness change. Plus you have to wait a couple of seconds to see the brightness change, it is not as immediate as was with Win7. Also in the registry i can only find KMD_EnableBrightnessInterface2 key, not the other one (i did a search too it doesn't exist). It was set to 1, i set it to 0. Btw i'm running latest 15.7.1 Win10 amd drivers but running a 7970M in my system.

Update.. latest ATK V1.0.0039 causes more problems than it solves. Still not sure if the freeze that happens soon after bootup is ATK or LAN related, but this ATK caused a problem where if I leave my laptop shut down overnight, the first boot after shows a black screen just before the startup screen. After I reboot it works fine. Also got 2 times bsod WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR while using firefox, where this didn't happen before. I'm now running without ATK, nor P4G, but lan enabled to check for stability and rule out what causes problem. Btw screen brightness adjustment works perfect on Win10 alone without ATK.

Thank you. Disabling the Ethernet adapter fixed my Windows 10 boot problems on my G73JH. It now runs perfectly on Windows 10.

I have an Asus g73jh and after windows 10 upgrade/fresh install starts to freeze. I thought was the RAM problem because it random freeze, then i swap the ram one by one for 4 of them the problem still happen. Then i read some comment they mention about network driver problem so i change the network card then 3 weeks already my g73jh still run windows 10 never freeze again. Done

Sorry to say... but it's been a struggle.

Windows 10 would ultimately lock up with, with the screen showing grey bars across. Rebooting into safe mode was not possible. I tried installing Windows 10 cleanly (no upgrade) as well with the same effects.

When I downgraded to Windows 7 however, after installing the *latest* AMD display drivers (v10?), I experienced the same lockup issues. When I reverted back to the AMD Catalyst drivers from 2009 (From Asus website for this laptop), everything is stable in Windows 7 again.

I'm pretty certain that there's an issue with the display drivers out there other than what was shipped when this laptop was built...

Does anyone know of other display drivers for the G73JH that won't blow up in Windows 10?

It sounds as if you never upgraded your GPU Bios, also called vbios, could that be?
If yes, you'll find in this forum a link for the firmware including a manual. Just search for g73jh and vbios.

I swap the Ethernet card between g73jh and my another Hp Elite Book 2570. The windows 10 work very well in both computer and no worry about the driver windows 10 will select the best driver for you.
I haven't try any other Ethernet card because I don't have one but what i thing any card might work.

The ethernet card is build into the mainboard, do you mean the wireless adapter?
You can't swap the ethernet card.

THANK YOU for letting me know about the VBIOS issue. The brownish-screen-of-death was exactly what I was seeing.

I've since updated the vbios, and re-installed a clean copy of Windows 10. At the risk of jinxing myself, 12 hours in, so far so good. This laptop might just last me a few more years!

Actually there are several bus types for internal Wireless cards. In any case, I recommend you to use a Netgear A6210. Although it's USB 3 and our G73JH only offers USB2, it's still way faster than my internal, upgraded, Intel 6200AGN card (more or less the fastest for the G73JH). I didn't test the A6210 with Win10 though, only Win8 so far.

There are edge cases but the vast majority of popular modern cards will work. If I went into every exception I would be here all day ;)

This has driven me nuts, on a G73JH. It happened when I went from Windows 7 to 8, so I went back to 7. Then I went from Windows 7 to 10, worked perfectly for 3 weeks and then... and then... I have never seen so many blue screens in all my life. I reformatted/reinstalled Windows 10 multiple times but I would literally log in and then I can't click on anything. Start menu wouldn't come up, when I clicked Edge the E logo screen came up but didn't load, couple minutes later frozen. I'm now back to Windows 7 and it works flawlessly.

Hey Guys.. bad news... on the Asus site: http://www.asus.com/event/2015/osupgrade/upgrade.html
the G73 isn't on the list for compatible with Windows 10.. it says you can install it but you might come across compatibility issues. FFS I spent so much money on it, never buying Asus again, EVER

Have you ever updates the vBios? Sounds like GPU drivers which cause a BSOD issue with non updated vbios.

I have problem after 2months with Win10 (upgrade from W7). I do not know, if some coud changed with SetFSB, when it was demo or corrupted system with changing TDT enable/disable in bios ... hope, it could be repaired with "set bios default" ...

What happened - last week started problems - long time starting screen with spinner, black screen, cannot open Start, hddis bussy, ... I saw into processes ... CPU 79% but cannot detect, which process :-(

2 months was all without any problem with all old drivers and AMD and Asus sw ( as it was in Win7HP ) under W10, no problems. Ued 2 HDD P0 - Win10, P4 - Ubuntu with grub, booted from P4.

NIC (Atheros) worked, WOL worked ... BIOS 213, vbios still original (never changed)

Tried reinstal from Win7, then reinstall from USB to W10. After severals restart same problem...

Does exist some HW test, if there is not some HW problem ? HDD tested with Seagate utils, RAM tested with memtest ... all ok.

Now I install back W7HP from partition and will set to W7Pro via WAU (because I need 32GB RAM)

and did you 211 or 213 main bios ? How working your net card ? Must be disabled, as somebody wrote here ? For me net card works well.

But after this flash is not way back - never saw original vbios on Asus for this ntb.

I didn't need to do anything to the network card, I haven't disabled it or anything. I used the latest bios from the Asus site, think its 213 but the main thing is the vbios, I noticed the gpu fans spin up alot more now after updating it.

I have Win10 running, with vbios installed and have no problems with audio over HDMI.
