That sounds just about right for BB , Also make a Note that if you do not get the Extra Warranty from BB they will not work on it past the 14 day return policy . ASUS has a contract with them to repair the units but here where we live they would not work on them , ASUS did warranty the units for me and did fix anything that was wrong.
I think that this is a BB issue and not ASUS , but I fought with them for weeks to get one of mine fixed. And others in the area also had the same problem.

And they came up with every excuse that they could to not work on the computers. The last time mine was taken in they kept it for 2 weeks and said it was full of bodily Fluids and infested ! This is on the paperwork .
Now you might not have this problem where you live , but I want to make sure that you where aware of this.

The ASUS management told me that this was a issue that they have had with BB and had to repair many that where sold through there stores . But they will warranty the unit .

It is 100000% legit. Just called my local store to verify it. I will probably wait until Friday when I get paid to buy it, but yeah.

I had a feeling it was gonna be on sale, but .99 is kind of ridiculous. Atleast give me 100 off!

When you factor in the sales tax your looking at close $1300 depending on what state you are in. For $1450 you can get 1080p 2gb more ram and the 2nd hdd. Only $150 more really. Just a thought.

Yea, I know. This one is already stretching my budget. I can add 4gb of ram for 50 bucks and buy another 7200rpm with that extra money, when i get it.

    I really hate being poor.

I understand completely. I bought my JH for $750 on craiglist, so I know about poor (it was broken and I had to RMA it). Another option is the refurb RBBX05s at newegg for $879 but you have to wait for it to be in stock (I hear they sell out in five minutes). Only 90 day warranty though.

They don't have any at my stores around here. I just found a g71gx-rx05 on cowboom for 400 bucks with no power cord, so I think I may settle and get me a good desktop too. I'm not sure though

I have this model, the BestBuy one, and between the 1080p and the 720p monitor is not enough difference to matter to me. And the 6 gig of ram or 8 gig does not matter in less you are running some very high end software.
I run Video Forensic and Audio Forensic software at the same time and still do not use up all the 6 gig of ram that I have. The only thing my Unit had that some do not is the 7200rpm Hard drive.
So you should be fine on this unit.
The one thing that would have mattered that I can think of is the Blueray drive, and I do not use Blueray so that was not something I wanted.
For me the later model would have just been for bragging rights as the one that I have will do all I need to do and then some.

Best Buy's warranties are absolute garbage. They send your stuff to a district Geek Squad wharehouse. Sounds great an all but the Geek Squad guys in my area are the biggest bunch of idiots and down right rude to add to it. I would buy anywhere that allows you to go through Asus for any repair work.

I wonder how that worked out.

.99 cents off: Better than nothing. With Best Buy warranty, you won't have to RMA it to ASUS as a nice NBR member told me. I do agree that GeekSquad isn't the best tech support around but with this laptop it seems that a 2 year warranty is really worth it.

The Warranty that ASUS gives G73 owners does not apply to the Best Buy model. So keep that in mind . The Accident warranty does not apply also.
Asus will warranty the machine and after the 14 day return policy at BB you will not get the service that they say in less you have paid for there costly warranty. So just keep in mind and check every thing you can about buying at BB. Do a search and you will see what I and many many others have gone through trying to get a machine fixed at Best Buy.

Thanks for that help. Will be buying from there, although at the moment they are out of stock on the Blu Ray!!! It's always something, but then again I don't really need it till I get the screen fixed. Will post pictures on Friday of the laptop being unwrapped and the works.

I was pissed off that day, my laptop had broken that morning, Geek Squad was being idiots to me, needless to say I "NICELY" got them to sell it to me for a cheaper price.

You can put any SATA laptop drive in IIRC. I used this one for my BB model: Amazon.com: LG Super-Multi Slim Blu-ray Combo Drive CT21N - Bulk: Electronics

The process was pretty painless for the most part, just pop out the old one and replace.

    AMAZING ...

    5 stars...

They're also selling the older refurb version just like newegg for just about the same price (under $900). But forget the year's worth of service from ASUS

I could go on and on about how fast the processor and video card are. How ridiculously low the temperatures are on HIGH end settings. (completely max settings on ANNO and Civ V for hours of play = never higher than 70 degrees C)

The 6GB or DDR3 are more than enough for anything you throw at it. Unless you know you've got some ridiculous video/graphics editing that needs more (you'd know if you needed more before you bought it)

It comes with the 211 BIOS already installed.

The 5400rpm drive can be kept and a smaller SSD can be installed for crucial applications. Sure 7200rpm would have been nicer but realistically, while slower loading times are a few seconds of your life, it's easy to upgrade and the better processor makes up for this drawback. So this is not a con...

I recommend this entirely, but realistically, here are the cons to consider before you purchase.

Mouse pad is awful for anything other than very light use like browsing or word use. (mouse = quick fix)

It is HUGE so don't expect to move this around a lot

The screen is VERY sub-par. While the 1600x900 resolution is not that cumbersome, the fact that the range is terrible might annoy you. It certainly annoys me, so this is the first thing I'll upgrade. Left to right range is not too bad but I kid you not, if you move your head 1" higher or lower than the middle of the screen you'll notice the wash. Part of that has to do with the screen being so large, an even bigger part of that has to do with the screen being so cheap. Seeing as how I'm a capable human, I have a pretty good range of motion, so while this is annoying at times... it's certainly not a problem

And perhaps the biggest con is that you have to communicate with the Best Buy floor reps who are about as capable as a floor lamp but as annoying as a horny chimpanzee.

    -------------------

Please please please go to the forums for this laptop and look at the "unboxing your G73" thread. You'll want to check every square inch of your new purchase, install new drivers, update and back up. Remove all the best buy junk and you're set. It took me about 6 hours to get this set up with all new drivers, favorite applications and massive game installations.

But quick question Kuro, does the color of that dvd drive not match up with the rest of the laptop?

You can take off the faceplate. Just put the one of the G73's DVD drive on the newer BD drive. Only issue is the sticker still says DVD/CD but hey, just a sticker.

I agree the screen is washed out, I was not even looking a that when I go it.
But now agter 2 months of use, I hate the screen, but that is the only draw back.

After the warranty runs out, and if other find screen that work, I might replace it.

Next time I am excited about buying a new laptop and somebody starts a thread about exactly that, I'll try to be more brief in my explanation of pros and cons so as to not insult anyone who has difficulty reading a few paragraphs of information

or are you really just a best buy floor rep? :D

Gah, well I'm ordering that HDD bracket from Asusparts, so I might as well snag the 2mbs Webcam for the hell of it. I'm getting a lot of money left over because I'm buying it from BB. Can any one tell me if I buy that HDD Bracket, that I'm still missing the caddy or it has everything I need???

Also KuroLionheart, can you tell me what you meant by the faceplate to put on the new DVD driver, that astounded me since I'm newbie to computer modding...

The front piece of the drive comes off. The part with the logo and the button to open the drive, the G73 uses a unique faceplate because of how the G73 is shaped. You just pop off the existing one and slap it on the new drive and stick it in, it's pretty easy. Oh and there's a little hook thing in the back on the G73 drive that you unscrew and put on the new one.

I know that I could just flip this over, unscrew the plate and look but... that would involve all of those things.

Are you getting an HDD bracket to add a second HDD? I thought the second bay was already installed in this model. No? So, If I buy an SSD do I need to get a bracket or jerry-rig it?

The BB only comes with one HDD and as far as my researching took me, it does not come with the second bay stuff that you need like the bracket and the caddy...Still confused as to if the caddy and bracket are the same thing.

Bouncing back and forth between a 64gb SSD or a 750gb 7200rpm black drive. That and I am adding 4gb of ram, just for overkill.

I hear you, I'm doing the screen, optical drive, web cam, keyboard background light, and finally the hard drive, but not necessarily in that order. Will keep on the this the post of all of my upgrades. Going to be a sweet machine.

By the way why don't you go a 500 gh SSD from Seagate? Its like 80% faster then a 7200rpm drive apparently. It retails for $109.99....
