The screen size difference is negligible. The laptops ARE different sizes, but big is BIG, no matter how you spell it.

I got my G53 yesterday and love it minus the screen. Mine has horrible black levels and a lot of light bleed. It is bothering me so much I may return it for another one to see if they all look like this. I had a G73 and the screen was much, much nicer than this.

All G53 have the same screen. Infact I would go for the G73 for the screen alone. I was hoping my MSI wouldn't have the same screen but it does. I can live with it though but I am waiting for a suitable upgrade (screen, HD6000 series and sandy bridge) before I change mine.

Yes, I have to re-state what has been stated - the g73 screen is simply amazing, considering you don't pay a premium for it.

ibraveheart, if you don't mind, could you please tell me the thickness of your ASUS laptop...

I'm trying to decide between the G53 and G73.. From the dimensions I see online, it looks like the G53 is thicker nearly wider? Only the length of the G73 is more... It might be that the G73 makes better use of its bezel..

Is the G53's screen really bad or is it just that the G73's screen is really good.

Its not bad, but its not good in my opinion. It has a very narrow sweetspot and even there you get some white bleed at the top and bottom in dark scenes. On the flip side, the colors and brightness are very good, and during most games it has a lot of pop.

To me, screen is very important because I don't plan on using an external monitor. I will go for the G73JW for the screen, better ease of access to components for upgrading and better cooling system.

Tweaking the gamma in the Nvidia control panel and upping the contrast helping tremendously. The colors are still "screwed" but it looks better in black scenes now.

Hi! If we're talking about the same specifications for both laptops,
    ASUS G53JW-A1 i7-740QM 1.5G GTX 460M 8GB RAM BLURAY
    and
    ASUS G73JW-A1 i7-740QM 1.5G GTX 460M 8GB RAM BLURAY

The differences would be; (above)G53jw comes with 750GB, 15.6 inches while (above)G73jw comes with 1TB, 17.3 inches, and the rest is same. The prices of these laptops are G53JW=$1685 and G73GW=$1800

These are the prices of one vendor only (I'm sure there are other vendors offering $20-$30 more or less for both laptops, but negligible right now).

My opinion: G73JW is better for gaming with bigger screen (17.3 to 15.6-big diff.) but heavy if you want to carry it around often. G53JW can not get a big plus from being mobile either because it weighs 7.9lbs while G73JW weighs 8.5lbs (small diff.). If you want to add another 250GB HDD to G53JW it will cost you around $60. So the price difference will remain as $55. I would still choose 17.3' over 15.6' for $55 more.

The G53Jw is big for a 15" Laptop
cos of the 1" border on both sides = 2" of wide waste
    its same as my m17
wish they had made it sleeker or if it had to be this big
give it a little more Screen 16.1or5

ibraveheart, now that you have the laptop, do you feel like you should have gone for the 17"; and also, is the screen of the G53JW-A1 too small for gaming?

    Thanks

I've had a few 15 inch gaming laptops, and they're more than adequate for gaming - even after having a 17 inch one.

But for asus, their 15 inch G series laptops are so clunky ... you might as well get a 17 inch one for ease of internal access and extra screen real estate.

What is the resolution of the g53?
Also, how big is the brick?

I currently have the Alienware M9700 and am looking for a replacement. The brick is huge.

I'm going to get the G53SW this weekend to replace my very much flawed m15x-R1.

After a long debate with myself I think this is the best choice as there may only approx. an inch more in added depth and width for a 17' monitor, but the same specs and resolution why not just get the smaller version? If you had to sacrifice on specs and resolution then sure the G73JW is a whole different decision.

The only thing against the G53JW over the G73JW is aesthetics in terms of bezel size and disassembly. I also think you won't nice 1 inch of size on either model as it's hidden behind the screen, unlike other laptops which have hinges pivoting on the edge of the laptop body.

I also think that the ASUS G53SW will just barely fit in my current Samsonite satchel-type bag, based on a scale 2D cardboard cut-out I made using the G53JW dimensions (yes I'm that sad!). An inch more on-top of this i.e. the G73JW and it won't fit.

The GenTechPC review on YouTube has both of the G53JW and G73Jw side-by-side at the start for a comparision:
YouTube - Asus ROG G53JW nVidia GTX460M Gaming Notebook overview

In addition I found this useful website which may help:
Sized Up: Asus G73JW vs Asus G53JW vs Precision M6500 vs MacBook Pro 17 vs Studio XPS 13

I still think a card-board cut-out is the way to go though.

I think you'll also just have to accept that the G53JW is more a 16' laptop with a 15' monitor. If you can move past this then it's the best choice IMO.

Lastly as crappy as the m15x-R1 is, it's made me appreciate 1920x1080 on a 15' screen! Being my first laptop, I 'ummed and ahhed' over this prior to purchase but haven't thought negatively about it since...especially when you realize how useful it is to have 2xA4 pages side-by-side on a 15' laptop for work.

Now if only they made the G53SW with slightly smaller and with better port positioning...

Where were you able to find a G53SW? I have not seen any posted on the Reseller websites so far? This is the model I plan on getting as well.

    Definitely the G53JW/SW. Problem-free, unlike the 73-series, where it's "laptop-roulette".
