Never cared much for ASUS FancyStart, which is why I suggest not installing it in the guide. Plus, if you have reset your BIOS using the "Restore Defaults" option, ASUS FancyStart may not work correctly because BIOS defaults to "Disabled".
If it is at all any help, since I don't have a booting issue, there are only four changes I made to the BIOS after a "Restore Defaults", they are:
- Change boot order to DVD first (may also allow extra spin up time of HDD).
- POST Logo Type = Animated
- Play POST Sound = yes
- Speaker Volume = 1
Everything else is set to the defaults.
When I called ASUS, they said to press and hold the reset button in the hole underneath for 15 seconds, which AFAIK temporarily disconnects the motherboard battery resetting the BIOS. What does holding down the power button do?
BIOS 205 here, but yeah, I'd like to know as well.

Anyway, I've got two more uneventful boots with no hangs (total of 12ish when it use to hang every 3-5 start attempts).
I read about another user who was told by Asus to hold the power button down to fix his boot issue. In caveman speak, I guess it purges out any left over trons. It didn't help with his particular boot issue, but like I mentioned in my last post, one of these steps seems to be helping with my system. Hope it's not just random luck. Anyone else tried the steps yet? -

Sorry all, this doesn't seem to have fixed the issue. I did get through 15 successful boots with no issues, but my machine still has the problem.

This happens to me too. I noticed it happens more frequently when the Laptop is cold. I press pwr swtch, windows starts normaly but screen stays black/off.
Now I know what to do. I let it start until i hear the windows startup sound (logon screen). I then press and hold pwr swtch until its off. then start again. If the same happens, repeat the method.
Screen will come ON after the 2nd or 3rd start, when the laptop has warmed up, i guess. It doesn't happen again until my laptop is cold again.
Don't rush to switch off the laptop each time, wait until you've heard the logon sound. (or blue drive light stops flickering).
p.s. upgraded to the 209 Bios 3 days ago and so far haven't had this problem. -
I haven't had a boot up issue in a couple of weeks now. All i do is unplug AC power before turning laptop on, and have AC plug in all other times. Something for you guys to try...

I just wanted to add my experience.
I have a reverse problem. I have an A2 model that came with 8GB of RAM. I have been reading that the G73 may overclock higher when only 3 RAM slots are used instead of all 4.
So I just took one of the RAM modules out and when I did this I could not boot/post the machine. Just all the blue lights come on for a second and then go off again.
Tried a few more times and no luck. Soon as I put the RAM back in, it booted fine.
I read all 6 pages of this thread and what I did not see anybody say they tried was to reset the CMOS when changing the RAM. I need to try this but was impatient right now since I have work to do.
Chances are the BIOS is set to X amount of RAM and if you attempt to boot the machine with the incorrect amount of RAM it causes an error. I think there is the ASUS fast boot in place on this machine and that may be the reason why. It skip some of the diagnostics part of a boot like where the machine reads drives/ram to save time.
Resetting the CMOS before you boot will probably cause a full diagnostic and the machine will post, from there make sure you press F2 to go into the bios and then F10 to save & close.
If it works for you great. I'll let you guys know if it works for me later, and also if it let me overclock higher when only 3 sticks of RAM. -
ViciousXUSMC, how do you go about reseeting the CMOS?
I have Asus fast boot uninstalled and still have the issue.
Btw, as per my previous post, unplugging AC power before start up is still working for me and the machine boots fine, not sure if this is just a coincedence. I tried it last night with AC plugged in and the machine didn't boot up. -

Put a paperclip in the little hole in the bottom of the machine and hold it for about 10 seconds and have the battery removed from the laptop.
That is how you reset the cmos the easy way. Sometimes you may go as far as to remove the actual CMOS battery from the mobo but on the G73 thats hard to get too. -
Guys,
FYI Unplugging AC before boot up fixed the issue for me. haven't had the problem in over 2 months. -
Anyone find a new or better fix for this?? I have an A2 and it just started having this problem after about 2 weeks. I happened after I turned Fancy Start back to default settings...I've tried everything mentioned in these 6 pages and nothing has worked for me. I'm on BIOS 209. The last time my computer was shutdown, I had to force close Steam...any help is appreciated and sorry for opening a old thread. To bad my first post had to be about my problem with the G73 instead of how good its gaming is and my awesome times playing Killing Floor with it
-
G73 L33t, did you try having AC unplugged when powering up? That worked for me.
-
I''m using express gate to boot up first. It's work perfect for me

Well, it's too late now. I just RMA'ed it yesterday. Hopefully it will be back before I start my first high school year!
-
I thought about RMA'ing mine, but didn't want to take the risk of getting a new unit which could have have one of the more serious issues some have been experiencing e.g. GSODs

I tried Wal's method.It works great

My boot issue eventually resulted in power up with no boot (i.e. I could turn the machine on and see some of the blue lights but the hard drive never activated or loaded Windows). I RMA'd through Indiana and got it back in about two weeks with a new motherboard and BIOS 209 (previously 206). Thank God I didn't experience any of the dreaded issues with the RMA.

If you're experiencing the boot issue I recommend keeping your critical data backed up in the event you go to boot one day and get what I experienced. I still love this machine and would purchase it again. I understand the frustration with the boot issue; it was a moment of suspense every time I started my G73. -
hi ,
im new on this forum and my english is very bad
my problem is : OK here's what happens, sometime when I turn on my g73 it wont start up. I press power button and I get the blue LED's on the laptop (pwr button,3 hotkeys upper left, and theone on the front lip) but nothing else happens, it won't boot no matter how long I wait. Sometimes the fans spin up also, but again nothing happens. I then press and hold the pwr button until is shuts off, and then hit pwr again and usually it starts/boots up fine with no others problems, sometimes it takes several tries to get it to power up correctly.
how can i simple fix this problem on my asus g73 ?
p.s. please answer with "simple" english , thx ^^ -

Cheers, -
ok, i will test this with the rams.
when i have a result , then i will post it here. -
its with all rams the same thing -
any news ?
my asus g73jh was by asus rma service.....
its the same problem -
Ya, mine came back a few weeks ahead of time! They replaced the motherboard, and that was it. It works great however, this model GSOD's on drivers other than stock ;(

Its a problem with your either your ddr-ram or gpu ram holding the wrong cache files that are used for next boot up..
I had this problem and searched for 3 days before i found out how to fix it.. My laptop after the power button was pressed would power up for a few seconds with nothing but a black screen and then power down, start up, power down.. maybe even 3 to four times before it would just stay on but really nothing was running except the fans and the lights saying it was on.. I'd get lucky to get it to actually boot windows even without out a signal to the monitor.. if you want to see whats going on inside before you try my method then here is how.. you may want to go ahead and uninstall as much as you can to do with the ATI graphics..
*(optional, or try if you think my solution is crap lol)
To just have a method to see the desktop again when windows boots without any monitor signal. Follow these steps..
1.) If you keep trying over and over to boot untill you get the ASUS Bios Screen and immediately start hitting F8.
2.) Boot into safemode with networking.... if this doesnt work, i don't know what to do other than go to my last step.
3.) Go to www.logmein.com and create an account if needed to "Add This Computer"
4.) Once installed if you can get it to boot up into windows at all you'll be able to access your desktop from another computer if both connected to the internet. (mine showed no monitor installed at all and gave me no options either but i also had deleted the VGA driver because i though it was from some VMware stuff that i thought was causing the error).. Anyways that how you can see what going on inside before this..
Don't laugh but it worked for me... I did a full system restore once and returned to the same problems... So i uninstalled all the ati drivers in there and Power4Gear... and did another Factory settings system restore.. after restore was complete it shut down.. And this is what I read fixing it which I would suggest before anything else..
***WHILE SHUTDOWN: UNPLUG, TAKE THE BATTERY OUT, THEN HOLD POWER BUTTON FOR AT LEAST 45 SECONDS***
I then put the battery back in, plugged it back up and booted to have everything working for me.... I think it flushes the ram so nothing from previous boots that was causing problems are there anymore. -
I just got this problem today, i turned it off by pressing the power button and restart, worked fine. Is this a sign that i am going to get the boot issue soon? I have 9 days left on my return policy with tigerdirect. Lol. I didn't mind the GSOD issue since i was still able to "use the computer" but if the boot thing is going to prevent my computer to start up at all, i will return it.
Problem: Turning on computer, no image, just black screen, turn it off manually using power button, turn it back on, worked. -

[palmslap] Nevermind....

I just sent my G73 in for RMA due to a similar issue. It would not only have this issue, but my video card would sometimes not be detected once window boots. The laptop eventually shut down during a game and never showed anything on the screen again when it was turned on...
I'll report back once the RMA arrives.
