    Hello !

I try to find some informations about this kind of upgrade , but i didn't find any of them. I read a topic where people update their G73 , but no G74.

First , i read that GPU where some kind of " tagged " and cannot be changed , is this true ?

Can we change the CPU in this kind of laptop ? If so , which one can be compatible ?

I won't do it for now , but it's just for me to know if , later , i can buy a CPU wich is more powerfull than 2 Ghrtz 2630QM :)

    Thanks !

The GPU is built in and part of the motherboard there is no separate MXM slot so there is no chance of changing the GPU.

The CPU can go to anything upto 2720QM/2820QM/2920XM.

Yea the GTX560M is integrated into the motherboard and you could try an i7 2920XM but I'm not sure if the multiplier can be changed through ThrottleStop like the i7 920/940XM.

    Thanks :)

Anyone here already done that kind of upgrade ?

Getting performance boost compared to 2630QM ? I'd like to have something like 3Dmark06 score comparaison between a 940XM and 2630QM for exemple.

    Edit : WOUh , thoses upgrades really cost 500€ ? ( 700-800 $ ) on ebay ? oO

I know that gentech and Xotic pc offer an upgrade service for their G series machines. You could try to contact them and ask if there are any problems into doing this kind of upgrade speaking of bios level issues.
Anyway you don't need an XM at all, I concur that 2820qm is the best bang for the buck and I'm planning to get an oem version for my g53 as well when warranty will run out since I have to disassemble the whole thing and void the yellow sticker on the CPU.

The 2920XM when overclocked upto 4.0ghz is an absolute beast though it benchmarks on par slightly lower than a desktop I7-2600k. But it depends how long you intend to keep the pc for and if you require the CPU for something other than gaming.

It will drop in price later on when IVY hits the scene the same as Nehalem has for us a 920XM is only around $300/£180 now. I personally dont see the point in upgrading from a 2630QM to a 2820QM. All or nothing.

An SSD would be a better upgrade and keep one of your Momentus XT's.

You guys here are great , thanks for your fast answer !

As i said , i'd like to upgrade later , probably when my Warranty will get off , so in two years now as i bought my G74 one week ago x) But it was cool to know that later , in a year or two , i'd be able to boost that beast even more :)

The SSD is a good idea, but i sold my desktop , so now my main computer is the G74 , and i can't get rid of 500 GB to go to something like 120 GB SSD ( i can't afford a bigger SSD , especially for a technology that is , friend say , not that good. Great performance , but durability = 0 , i have at least 5 friend that fried their SSD within the first months ... )

Maybe if i can find something " like " a 1 TB Momentus XT ( don't even know if that exist , and how much it would cost ) , so i can switch the second momentus into my M11X or in external drive , and having the power of an SSD :)

1TB memory is near full here already , considering that i have tons of music, movies, and a HUGE steam game list , many of them are not even installed yet.

Woup , up ! as people said it here , IVy bridges are coming , and 2820 are so cheap now ...

Someone talks about Xotic pc offering such services , will it void my warranty ?

You might want to take a look at the 2760QM that I have its the best bang for buck at the moment. 2.4-3.5Ghz and it is on par with the performance of a 2920XM. Certainly go for the one of the newer Sandy Bridge refreshes ending in XX60.
